Uuuuuuh, hey! How's it going?

Nothing much around here. It's freaking cold. My laptop overheats. I bought a second-hand iPod Touch to use iOS-only apps. I keep importing new Okami merchandising because I have a fucking collection. I continued with my German course. I'm also going to Madrid for a few days, in two weeks! Things I should be doing more of? Working on my final college project. Oops. Playing the games/apps I keep buying on Humble Bundle. Reading more stuff, watching more stuff. Obviously updating DW/LJ.

Okay, so, what should I talk about...

Excuse the Spanish for a sec. Quería decir hola a la gente del friending meme de [livejournal.com profile] masquefandom, hola! Me llamo Christel pero también pueden llamarme Kiri, espero que nos llevemos bien.

I'm trying to be more productive this year, with miscellaneous results. I can't say it's working but at least I'm routing myself towards it? I don't even know.

α. I started rereading Lord of the Rings today. I'm getting ready to skip the forest descriptions. I've only read every book and watched every movie like once, so my mini-failgoal this year is going through them in both mediums. I dunno, Tumblr has been reblogging a lot of Tolkien stuff and I feel like doing it.

β. I finished the original novel of Seirei no Moribito. It's not bad at all, but I actually like the anime's pacing and changes better. The race/culture meta in it was interesting, though. I have the second book which wasn't adapted, let's see if with unknown material I can have wiser expectations.

γ. It's not like Pokémon X/Y isn't shiny, but I haven't played Black/White 2 yet so my body is not ready. In a "lol okay" sort of way instead of excitement, I mean.

δ. I came around to play the 3DS port of Tales of the Abyss. I haven't touched the damn console since I got Kid Icarus and sucked enormously at it. And I'm in the mood for RPG yet not for a new game, so it's cool.

holiday love meme 2012
my thread here

I did take a screencap at 12:12, but I liked my 11/11/11 geekery better. I was out this morning so this was my best attempt.

Brrrr. it's getting so fucking cold. Speaking of which, I watched Rise of the Guardians and I wasn't expecting a deep plot so I enjoyed it a fucking lot. Too bad the books are expensive here and I can't find illegal copies, since they look pretty cool.

And so this doesn't look too empty and depressing, I'll take the chance to make a list of stuff I want/need to buy this holiday season or next year.

Falalalalalalalala )

I also should go to my uncle's place to get my LOTR books (I remember shit from The Hobbit) and my manga. I really wanted to reread/rewatch the Matantei Loki series... Incidentally, it's weird that my reaction to what's happening at the sequel is all "but I wanted the adult Loki for a but longer!!1" when in Marvel is the total opposite. The status quo in both fandoms with kid Lokis is always against what I want, LOL. Meanwhile, I'm rewatching Princess Tutu for a third time and I'll probably read the original short story of The Nutcracker around Christmas time. I planned that last year and then I forgot, so I have it ready.
taotrooper: It's a 15 year old midget smirking at you (Edward / smirk)
SO, LEGEND OF KORRA! I'll get this one first so you can skip the spoilers and read the other nonsense if you want. You gotta deal with it )

In compulsive buying news, I have acquired Kid Icarus: Uprising. I've only played the first level a few times because I think my consoles give me the flu as soon as I touch them :[ I watched the anime clips and dude, they're really amping the Palutena-is-moe and it's not just SHAFT. So as annoying as the VAs are, I like her and Pit so far. They're big dorks. About the gameplay, it's confusing at first but maybe I'll get the hang of it. I'm feeling some anxiety over weapon fusion like I always have when I have to fuse shit up in games (I didn't dare to screw with Personas for half of my first P4 playthrough)

I don't really get why the OMG MUST GET THEM ALL around the AR cards. Is it a collector TCG thing or do they actually affect the game experience in a relevant way? Honest question here.

I also bought Percy Jackson: The Demigod Files which isn't that interesting besides the short stories. I already had html versions of them, but it's Festus' intro and I have a lot of feelings over a bronze mecha dragon. Shuddup.

I couldn't find the Moribito books in Spanish and I've been looking for them for months. In the end I bought them off Amazon.es. Last copy they had. Dammit, I'm in no economical shape to spend all this money.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Ocarina of Time / this is a song of hope)
I've been a seriously lame LJ user lately. Guess I've been easily distracted recently. So let's try to sum shit up.

TV stuff (and some comics tossed in)

So Doctor Who cliffhanger. I'm surprised that my crazy theories (and almost everybody else's, actually) back from the first two-parter AND some rumors I heard turned out to be both true. It was an epic mid-finale episode anyway, but a huge part of my thoughts are pretty much:

Thin-veiled spoilers for Doctor Who AND the Booster Gold series )

In any case and as much as an asshole he might be, the way Moffat trolls people over Twitter is hella amusing.

Gaming stuff

On Friday I went to a clearance sale at PC City and got Hotel Dusk 2 Last Window: The Secret of Cape West and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep at a pretty cheap price. My brothers lost their PSP's memory stick, so guess I won't be playing KH until I buy one.

So, E4! Nothing I care about for Microsoft, don't own current Sony consoles nor I'm going to. The Wii U controller is a little WTF. In any case, I'm all pumped for Skyward Sword and Kid Icarus Uprising.

Also, I'm kinda depressed because the Ocarina of Time remake comes out for my birthday, but hell if I'm going to buy a 3DS. I'd rather wait for the mandatory lite version, unless I see a fair pack with a worthy game.

Book stuff

I've read the first book of The Dresden Files. All my friends love the series in a masochistic way, but so far I'm not sure if I'll like it enough. On the meantime I started The Red Pyramid. I had started this novel with Greek gods as protagonists, but after Athena willingly losing her virginity in chapter two I'm not sure if I want to continue for the trainwreck.

Random stuff

WHY is the largest mall in Spain (and third largest in Europe) in my city? This place isn't important! It makes no fucking sense!
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Raine / the texture of these tiles!)
I think I've survived to at least 3 possible apocalypses in my lifetime. Bring it on, end of Mayan calendar! I dare you!

I had a fun Saturday last weekend. My brothers and I went to the local anime con. It's nothing extraordinary and the name is so embarrassing (really, Expotaku?!) but this year it was a large improvement compared to last year's. More people, more shops, more variety on cosplays, more events, more geekdom. I also tried Street Fighter on 3DS (the 3D actually looks okay, but I go cross-eyed XD) and archery (and I was TERRIBLE!).

Of course, more shops = compulsive buying like a boss.

→ two Suzumiya Haruhi novels, now I'm only missing one from the relased here
Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide by Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt (I'm madly in love with this book, you guys, it is witty and visually appealing)
Captain Herlock: The Endless Odyssey DVD boxset
→ three pins: the FMA cross-and-snake symbol, a pokéball, trollface
→ some fanart postcards for charity
→ a Fullmetal Alchemist T-shirt with Ed and Al which I'm still waiting to see if it shrinks in the drier (it was the smallest man size and I'm a petit woman but I dun curr)
→ a box of strawberry Pocky (tasted good, but wasn't as delicious as I thought)
→ a Boo Buddy-shaped rubber ball keychain (best thing I bought)
→ three cellphone charms: a red koopa shell, a Totodile, a Piplup
→ two Pokémon plushies: a Darumaka and a Sandile. Totally overpriced but I couldn't let them rot in a sea of kawaii blobs. The ones on my team are fierce.

As for my brothers, Ale spent his money on four new video games, but he's not playing them yet. Danny actually bought a fancy State Alchemist watch. As much as an asshole he is and as different as he is from me, I love that he likes FMA (he watched Brotherhood but one day I'll convince him to read the manga). The most amazing thing is that his favorite character is Alex Louis Armstrong. Goes to show that you can love a character who's the opposite of yourself!

Then I spent two days of extreme pain from carrying weight and wielding a bow. And that day of the month. And emotional exhaustion. Sunday sucked as much as Saturday ruled.

Oh, and my copy of Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero came on the mail today. Finally! Also, that bastard of a book is huge like a J.K. Rowling novel. Reading it on ebook first, I didn't realize how verbose Riordan has become.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Crossover / broom vs. honest wind)
1) RIP Diana Wynne Jones ;_; Thank you for filling my bookshelf with fantasy, fairytale deconstructions, and metrosexual wizards. I will miss you, magnificent lady. I should read more of her books, um.

2) I feel kind of bad because there are a lot of dragons in this gen, but I just fished a level 53 Dragonair and it's my favorite dragon and I want to try him out :| I wanted to use only Unova kids and I was doing so well... I don't know what to do. I still had to catch a Deino to try them out, actually.

3) Hey, guys?

I realized that lately all the games I've played recently have always some dark element that leaves angst and tragedy lingering, and my mind (and the fanworks) always returns to those. It's funny because they're all fluffy and for the NDS, LOL.

I don't mean games alone, though. Actually, anything but games is preferable. Books, manga, TV shows, movies. I have so much stuff to read/watch that I feel overwhelmed and this is why I've been gaming lately. I don't know what to jump into because there's so much to try and I'm eternally undecided.

Things I've read/watched and loved before are fair game too. And if you don't know me enough, then you could tell me what you've been enjoying lately. But no "Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies" recs, please. INB4 people tossing Magical Madoka and Homestruck anyway.

1) I can't recall which ones of you guys live in Japan, but I hope that everyone is fine :<

2) Some people in America are getting Okamiden a few days earlier. CLEARLY, THIS IS KARMA FOR ME GETTING PKMN BLACK SO SOON :| Can't I ever have something shiny first without being screwed somewhere else? *grumbles and waits until the 18th* Oh well, at least Game has a release date in their database so I know they won't pull a Ghost Trick on me.

3) No Korra until 2012? STOP COCKTEASING, DAMMIT!

4) And to feed my Norse mythology phase, I just got The Penguin Book of Norse Myths on the mail plus DWJ's Eight Days of Luke. Oh yeah!

5) The name Luke haunts me. Have I ever mentioned that? Because it does.

With that said, the usual reaction post. This will probably be the last but one post, since shit is getting real next time.

A biker gang now called the Black Munnas. That's both cute and creepy )
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Issun / size doesn't matter)
I bought Eight Days of Luke by DWJ, online. I'm still bummed over the lack of ebook for this one, but this is likely a good inversion because this book has Loki as main character. Nnnng have done want for such a long time. I also added a Norse mythology book to the basket.

After struggling with the brothers' Wii for 20 minutes -batteries, firmware updates, software updates, etc.- I downloaded the Okamiden demo from the Nintendo Channel. I can honestly say this was not worth it and I don't recommend it. It's not the game what was bad, no. It's the fact that instead of a demo with the first 15 minutes of the game, or maybe a piece of a dungeon + boss fight, or some running around Shinshuu field, or something cool? No, it was the fucking tutorial part! Remember the part of the original game, at the River of the Heavens, with Issun info-dumping you the basic controls so you could go on? IT WAS FIVE (OR LESS, IF YOU SKIP KUNI'S BLAHBLAH) MINUTES OF THAT WHAT THE FUCK I ONLY FOUGHT MONSTERS ONCE. That's no demo, that's a cocktease.

...Brush techniques with the stylus are sweet nonetheless. Still not worth your time, though.

Ahem. Less angry now. I'm crossposting an 30 Days Okami meme I'm doing on Tumblr. I saw a Percy Jackson one but half of the questions were movie and whatever dude.

And a happy Friendship Day to everyone, even if that's an addendum for us who don't have a couple and don't want to feel left out :D

This day has been lousy IRL, so since the only two novelties in my life are that I started a Princess Tutu rewatch, and I'm obsessing with Pokémon again (but that's for another post, I'd say), have a book meme instead.

1) Which book has been on your shelves the longest?
Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.

2) What is your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next?
I'm currently with Runemarks by Joanne Harris, which I'm enjoying a lot. I'm also selective-rereading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan (mostly the Leo-centric parts). The last book I read was Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman. By this, you can conclude I'm in a LOL NORSE MYTHOLOGY BUTCHERY phase, right? :'D
The next one will be either The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss or a Chrestomanci book. Or retake American Gods to follow the LOLNORSE trend, or continue my Percy Jackson reread. IDK, I have a lot to choose from recently.

Read a book read a book read a motherfucking book )
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Sokka / beautiful day)
Quick list:

α The tabs I have left open for research for original fic or blog posts I want to write get weirder and weirder, including Wikipedia links about tricksters and troubadours. Not for the same thing, sadly. I think this is why I rarely write: MY IMAGINATION IS TOO RANDOM.

β I'm getting used to reading in my silly gadget. My main issue is focusing in one book at the time.

γ The first finished thing this year was Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman. Even if it's a short story aimed at children, this might be my favorite mythology-based thing from everything he's written. I thought the main character was going to be like Hiccup, and in the end he was That Kid In Animanga Who Always Grins To Creep You Out ^_^ Trufax.

δ And because some of you were talking about it, I tried 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors(aka 999) yesterday. No$GBA wasn't saving well, so I used DeSmuME to play the ROM instead. I got to the Safe ending, I'll do the True ending later, then maybe the rest of the bad ends. The game is pretty good, some sort of ungodly hybrid between Hotel Dusk and Phoenix Wright gameplay wise, but very Agatha Christie meets any horror film with people trapped in a twisted game of sorts. It's pretty good if you like those two genres. Also, is it just me or the corpse descriptions are gross? I know that death by explosion is hella awful, but maaaaaan, TMI.

ε Read more of The Iliad, self!
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Okami / bloom for praise)
Okay, hi to everyone from the Okami friending meme! Nice to meet you. I swear I'm not as scary/dull as I may seem. And despite of listing many pairings, I'm pretty much vanilla. But yeah, favorite video game of all time for me is that one.

Meh, I wanted to peek over the Yuletide fics despite of not participating this year, but it won't open at all. Buuuuuummer.

Hmmm, what else? Ah, yes! I should start responding old memes, so if anyone wants a free icon from me, please go here. Maybe I'll begin before January 6th, hopefully :D /lazy bastard

And you know what I want to revive? My blog, Nectarade. And the Iliad reading. I actually had the next chapter half done since forever, but it was a good one and I wanted to make it justice with decent jokes, so I had a writer's block. Then my hard drive DIED. But yeah, I'll retake it. Gotta take advantage of my new reader coming with copies of The Iliad and The Odyssey (using Greek names and not Roman, thanks.) It also brought Virgil's Aeneid and Hesiod's Theogony, but the latter has a really lousy translation (Gaea gave birth to the GIANT OREOS?! I don't even XDDD)

Awesome Holidays!
Snowy/Sunny Solstice (choose your hemisphere)!
Joyous (belated) Yule!
Happy (belated) Hanukkah!
Cool Kwanzaa (in advance)!
Festive (belated) Festivus!
Merry Christmas!
Fantastic Friday (if you don't celebrate anything)!

Sure, have Shintoist aliens from the sequel of a Japanese game celebrating Christmas as a banner. Because why not.

→ Ah, in the end I did buy my ereader! Nicknamed Bastian. I haven't gotten around to do actual readings, but it seems pretty decent so far and the cover is made of black leather. Manga is pretty much unreadable and not only for the resolution, though. Oh well, I wanted to use it for text files anyway, so it's not a disappointment. The sudokus are annoying in that interface.

→ The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi is so, so, so awesome. I was one of the ten people who deliberately never looked for spoilers of that arc, and I'm truly glad because it was a blast that way.

→ I started reading Dr. Slump this morning. MAN, SO RANDOM XD I think I'm going to continue it because that shit is pure crack and there's no fourth wall whatsoever.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Crossover / broom vs. honest wind)
It was an okay book; it's not amazing but a decent read. I hear a lot of great things about the Chrestomanci series, so I suppose it's going to get better from here and this is just a First Book Syndrome. I think the setting itself (many worlds with many doubles of yourself) was more intriguing than the events themselves. Cat didn't really feel like a protagonist even though it was his POV, mostly because he was just pushed around by the plot without a purpose or understanding what was going on until the end. Dunno, maybe he'll stop being a pushover in the next books and we can get to know him better, but so far I don't have a strong opinion on this kid.

But the Chrestomanci? THAT'S WHERE IT'S AT. It's obvious that the cool, interesting character is going to be the Stupid Wizard (enchanter, whatever). He's like someone put hobo!Phoenix Wright and Howell Jenkins and something else and put them in a blender. Except Christopher Chant out-fops Howl, considering he changes his clothes several times a day and the narrative goes on colorful detail about it! I also love that someone as important and handsome as him married a plain-looking woman -I do like Millie, she's sweet. So I'm all for more of this cryptic dude, and I'll continue with his flashback book :D
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Pkmn / loev them Dragonairs)
In WTF news: House of Many Years is ALREADY translated to Spanish? Weirdly enough, it's not by the same publisher who did Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Air. I might consider buying it in Spanish first as the reviews aren't saying anything bad about the translation (plus, the cover is pretty and original). I'm going downtown this weekend to buy The Lost Hero anyway (yes, I'm buying that one, bite me) so I'll check it out.

GIVE ME A CHARACTER WHO IDENTIFIES AS FEMALE. Then I will write you the reasons why the lady is awesomer than awesome. It might be my squealing, it might be a drabble, it might be five reasons. The point is, I will gush about a female character, then YOU can gush about said female character and we will all be a little bit happier because 'FUCK YEAH, SHE'S AWESOME'.

For [livejournal.com profile] lalita_b, top favorite female characters in books.

My god, it's full of plot fetishes )
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Crossover / broom vs. honest wind)
Guess who read House of Many Ways! I really enjoyed it. I loved the references to Castle in the Air and the few cameos. I love how the characters from Howl's Moving Castle managed to be more epically involved in this one. I digged Charmain, perhaps because as a sheltered, rude, useless nerd I can identify with her. The plot wasn't that extraordinary or anything, and I would've liked more exploration of the title house and Peter and his mom and wizard Norland, but it was a nice read.

And jeez, LOLWHUT at Howl's disguise! Keep on trolling, stupid wizard! ♥ How can he manage to be more annoying and somehow sparklier in every book? In here the Pendragon family were pretty much transparent in contrast to the previous book, and seeing them around -although I'm a bit sadface at the lack of shippy scenes (at the end, I mean, otherwise it would've been eew)- pretty much sold the book for me.

Then again, I don't expect the books in the Howl series to be real sequels of HMC, so that might help a lot. This is why I take what I get and I'm not disappointed by new protagonists taking the spotlight of Sophie and Howl and Calcifer, plus those three are badass regardless.

I want my own Waif to adopt me. Socute.

Meanwhile, there are two novels I want to read but right now I shouldn't import anything. I've been trying to hunt for the illegal downloads to no avail. Does anyone know of a good place to get ebooks besides generic torrent sites?
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Tamaki / read more)
Feliz cumpleaños, [livejournal.com profile] hamsterfactor! :D

Yesterday I watched How to Train your Dragon and it was sweet. Am I one of the only people who thought it had potential since the trailer? I see almost everyone was all wary because it was Dreamworks, while I was all 'VIKINGS AND DRAGONS, they have to mess up pretty badly to get it wrong."

I also started the fifth season of Doctor Who, even though I skipped the whole run of Ten. Eleven is adorable so far. Nothing against Amy and the others, but why is it that all companions in the 'new' series are adult straight females from the XXI century?

ANYWAY! Today is Saint George and Book Day in Spain, so I went on a haul to get books with 10% off. It was awesome! I spent nearly 100€ in shit, also. Here is the loot:

Video games (okay, not everything was books)
Beautiful Katamari

IT stuff
→ one about PHP 6 and MySQL development
→ one about webapp development, useful for my project
I wanted to get more, like one for CSS and one for Struts, but reference books are so expensive!

Fantasy lit
Percy Jackson 5 in English, fuck yeah
→ Pratchett's Carpe Jugulum

Mythology nerd cred
→ a children's compilation (well, 14+) of stories from Ovid's Metamorphosis. It has pretty illustrations and all!
→ a small one analyzing Dionysus, I thought it seemed interesting
→ a generic one on Egyptian mythology because I didn't have any

ETA: Crap, I forgot the Manga
→ Fullmetal Alchemist 23
→ The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
→ The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
taotrooper: This wank deserves an icon with people eating popcorn (Persona / popcorn.gif)
So, monthly shopping~ I told myself not to burn all my money on comics/books and none of it in video games. I ended up looking at the DVD section, so I got the second season of Dead Like Me. There was a promotion of shitty cheap editions, 4 for 20 euros, but since it's been going since new year's there wasn't much to get. Two movies were random picks for pretty people in it*: The Departed (which is apparently fucking good) and Troy (which is known to be hilariously bad, I'm all for mocking). The other two I really wanted to buy, and they're two of the feeeew Burton films I remember fondly: Beetlejuice and Mars Attack.

Oh, and I also got the fourth Percy Jackson novel and the second Ocarina of Time manga, which together with the DLM boxset are things I truly needed in my life.

* I assure you, my inner sixteen-year-old is ironically cackling at me. Fuck you.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Katamari / ask me how I roll)

So this entry isn't pointless, and I don't have to pretend I've been a good LJfriend lately (so getting a coal these holidays), how about some reviews?

  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, also known as the lovechild of The Jungle Book and Tim Burton's filmography. It was fine, some stories more interesting than others (my favorite was the Danse Macabre one), but the ending chapters felt sort of rushed to me. Then again, all Gaiman novels do feel like that to me, somehow. They start well, and then I go "...so, that's it?" at the ending.

  • The Princess and the Frog. Cute! I was expecting to love it more after reading the spoilers and seeing how hard Disney was trying to make it different. I did like it, and Tiana/Naveen is hot and refreshing, but it all happened too fast for me and couldn't get attached. Maybe my memories of the golden age of Disney were too hyped and this is why I wasn't 100% satisfied? Or was it the lack of charisma in the animal sidekicks? But anyway, it's a fine first return to 2D!

  • Sword of the Stranger. I can only explain this by saying gorey samurai flick + Seirei no Moribito + Rurouni Kenshin + a puppy. It was fun! Kinda cliché much, and Nanashi is like the sexy lovechild of Kenshin Himura and Balsa who's failing to cosplay the dude from Blade of the Immortal, but the characters are cool and well-rounded for a movie -except for the crazy blond rival guy, he wasn't developed at all. I can tell you I would totally watch a show about the happy adventures of Kotaro and his two cute pets, Tobimaru and Nanashi. Or at least light novels or manga based on it. Come on, Japan, make it happen!

  • Summer Wars. Found a Korean fansub and an English sub file. Anyway, this movie's about TEH INTERWEBZ AND BREAKING THEM, you guys. Therefore, it's epic. (Also about family, but mostly, Internet being trolled) More not completely spoilerish details here ) Without entering in the real life details of the plot, this movie is all over the place and the cast is huge. But it's so satisfying and epic. Plus, it makes you wondering about the issues of newest technologies being so involved in everything. So go watch it when there are good English subs, because it's pretty cool.
