Take that, chmod!

1. In which I talk about weird programming shit:

I haven't fixed teh interwebz the network card driver on Ubuntu yet, so I'm still screwed on that part, but I could install (manually, and downloading them prior on the desktop) the rest of the packages the C compiler needed. So I could finish this week's part on the OS2 practice.

Of course, I had a fright when the chmod() command wasn't working correctly -the exercise was writing a program to change one or more files' permission modes, so it was kinda the whole point- and only the owner user mode would change. Then I noticed there was nothing wrong with my program: it was that I was testing it on my USB key files. When testing it in the home directory, everything worked like a charm <3

2. Oh snap, I DO have manga to buy urgently!

I'll probably go this afternoon after class to get one single volume of something that came out last week and I totally didn't notice. Now, this is awful because I'm saving for Phantom Hourglass and this fucks it up, but you see: Fullmetal Alchemist #8. Sorry, Link. I MUST buy it. Why?

XING CHARACTERS, BABY. XING. XING. XING. SHEEEEEEEEEEEEN.

I'm not sure if I should dread or look forward to Norma's romanizations.

Also, CAN I HAS NU HAGAREN CHAPTER SOON PLZ?

3. You'd think roleplaying him would shut his voice up in my head:

Please, guys. Tell me it's a bad idea to claim Ushiwaka from Okami in one of those themed fic comms. Tell me I never finish my claims -sometimes I never start them!- and I have too many in hiatus/block now. Tell me I should stop thinking about that jerk and return to the Eriol-tachi to update my CCS WIP. Tell me nobody's going to read them. Mind you, I may write Okami fic for myself and to amuse me, but let's face it: the lack of feedback still depresses me a lot and makes me wonder if I suck.

The thing is I'm only getting plotbunnies for him T____T And I want them out of my head like you wouldn't believe.

Going to lunch now.

Actually, they're fine... except for "Mei Zhang". WTF, I don't even know where they took that from. Though we still need to wait for another chapter to see how Lan Fan and Fu are spelt. And rentanjutsu is "waidan" :O

I actually found some of Ling's translated lines hilarious xD

Waidan...? I guess they went for the Chinese pronunciation of the kanji...? Only idea I got, honestly.

Zhang, LOL XD By the way, how did they romanize Xerxes?

Wait! Google to the rescue!

"Though the underlying doctrines remained unchanged, Chinese alchemy went through a complex and not yet entirely understood development along its twenty centuries of documented history. The two main traditions are conventionally known as waidan or "external alchemy" and neidan or "internal alchemy." The former, which arose earlier, is based on the compounding of elixirs through the manipulation of natural substances. Its texts consist of recipes, along with descriptions of ingredients, ritual rules, and passages concerned with the cosmological associations of minerals and metals, instruments, and operations. Internal alchemy developed as an independent discipline around the beginning of the Tang period. It borrows a substantial part of its vocabulary from its earlier counterpart, but aims to produce an elixir -- equated with transcendental knowledge -- within the alchemist's person.

"Chinese alchemy has always been closely related to the teachings that find their classical expression in the early "philosophical" texts of Taoism, especially the Laozi and the Zhuangzi. The cosmos as we know it is conceived of as the final stage in a series of spontaneous transmutations stemming from original non-existence. This process entails the apparent separation of primeval Unity into the two complementary principles, yin and yang. Their re-union generates the cosmos. When the process is completed, the cosmos is subject to the laws of cosmology. The alchemist's task is to retrace this process backwards. Alchemy, whether "external" or "internal," provides support to the adept, leading one to the point when, as some texts put it, "Heaven spontaneously reveals its secrets." Its practice must be performed under the close supervision of a master, who provides the "oral instructions" (koujue) necessary to an understanding of the processes that the adept performs with minerals and metals, or undergoes within himself."

Xerxes is Xerxes too! I'm impressed at the accuracy, really. I wonder if the translators took a look at the intrawebs, which is something really intelligent to do.

Ah, good ol' google. I guess the translation makes sense, then :D

Or maybe the translator is a fan of 300... XPPPP

Funny enough, weidan's characters don't match to rentanjutsu's kanji (weidan = 外丹). They totally went for a conceptual translation here.

Oh I wish ours was spelled like Xerxes :(

I hate csekles or however they spell it.

The FMA chapter has not come out early in forever. I used to expect it early now I just don't get my hopes up. :(

They're already up to #8in Spain? I just got #4 last month... D: *her heart is impatient but her wallet is happy*

As someone stuck with three different claimes for themed comms, I feel it's my duty to tell you: BAD IDEA. VERY BAD IDEA. If you can't stop the bunnies, you can always write them as normal one-shot fics, ir even just for your own amusement and then join a comm after you have a nice amount of them.

The "for your own amusement" thing works for me, at least. I have a couple of WIP fics that I'm writing just to get them out of my head, and probably won't ever leave my hard drive.

I say go for the fics :0 You really like Waka and if he's a muse that won't shut up, then that would probably help motivate you because you want to put a brick in his face :D Um, and the Okami fandom is so small! So I would thikn that the myriads of fans would look for what little fic they could get.

My wallet isn't, though D: I was saving for something! Damn you, Ling, for being introduced this month.

THANK YOU. I needed to see it written by someone who isn't me. I guess I felt that if I signed up somewhere, with the obligation I wouldn't feel guilty to forget about my other tables, because I'd have to write those ones too. But screw it!

What I can do is take the prompts I liked from the table without signing up, but write the ones I'm interested in anyway. One of the things that block me the most about claims is how sometimes you have to squeeze your brain to get some prompts adapted to the subject somehow. And I don't have to limit myself to Waka: if I want to write someone else or another fandom, then good.

*looks up "myriads" on the dictionary*

...Considering you can count the Okami fans who do read fic with your hands and still have spare fingers, I wouldn't use that word O.o The fandom is more for fanarts, and I can't draw well. Like I told you that day, wrong fandom for my way to do things ;_;

I'll still write him for myself, without signing up anywhere. Even if it's just to keep my sanity, and in the hopes at least one person besides me likes it.

Aaargh. I know. With some of my claims it's just me being lazy, but at [livejournal.com profile] insert_phrase I wrote most of the good ones and now I'm stuck with all the difficult ones.

So yeah, I say fo for the fics you want to write, but don't get stuck in a comm. :/
