I don't know, maybe I picked up a really good translation when I read the whole thing (2003, & I read it so I could write Troy fic, how sad is that?) but I thought it had some really pretty writing in it. As a story I enjoy The Odyssey more but I think The Iliad is better written.
But yes, indeed, IT HAS MANY MOCK-WORTHY THINGS. Specially Achilles, the jerk.
I confess to a ridiculous love for Hector. He is like too noble at times, and a bit of a Marty Stu (but then epic poetry always has those) but I find him lovely. Though my favourite is Odysseus, hands down.
ETA: How predictable is that Sister is my favourite character of the series? Damn me and my voice!porn obssession.
