Book recs?
GIP. The perfect icon for paranoid rants. Har har.
Meanwhile, I bought the cheapest Fellowship of the Ring DVD (one of those in special offer at magazine stands, you know; it's so cheap it only has one disc: the movie one). I'm not such a fan to waste so many movie in extended versions with documentaries and cast members going slashy. The movie is enough.
Anyway, I wanted to ask you guys something. I'm getting my public library card next Monday, so I'll be reading a lot this summer. So I'd like you guys to give me book recs. The library is not that big and a lot of cool books are not even translated into Spanish (as I discovered when I wanted to buy some Diana Wynne Jones books... meh), but I'll be searching for all suggestions just in case.
Just so you know, the genres I prefer are fantasy, mystery, terror, adventure, sci-fi... The only "realistic" books I tend to like are murder cases. Still, I'm also looking forward to read classic books even if they're real-life styled, as long as they're from an older time setting, not contemporany (i.e, Charles Dickens or Jane Austen books are okay, since they're Victorian, or historical-based fiction like Dumas books.)
So summing up, I'd like you to tell me which books you feel I should read, either because you feel I should love them, OR they're classic ones you think everyone must read at least once in a lifetime. Thank you in advance :)

Fantasy reccomendation: I *squee* for Artemis Fowl (by Eoin Colfer), a series about a preteen/teenage (Artemis grows older as the series progresses) criminal genius who kidnaps Captain Holly Short (an elf in the LEPrecon fairy police force). There are currently 4 books in the series. I think they've been translated into Spanish if you don't want to read it in the original English.
Horror reccomendation: The Saga of Darren Shan (by Darren Shan), a series of vampire fiction about a child named Darren Shan who is forced to be a vampire's servant as a half-vampire. This series has also been translated from English into many other languages.
Sci-fi reccomendation: Anything by WIlliam Sleator; I especially liked The Boy Who Reversed Himself, Boltzmon!, and The Boxes. I was a teenage fangirl over the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series (BEFORE the movie). I am currently reading Tau Zero (by Poul Anderson) about an interstellar voyage gone awry when the ship accelerates toward light-speed (therefore speeding time so much that, to those on board, a star's entire lifetime is extinguished in a few seconds, or less).
Mystery reccomendation: The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman, first in a trilogy set in Victorian London about a 16-year-old named Sally. In the first book, ze, recently orphaned, becomes involved in a deadly search for a mysterious ruby that is the key to unlocking hir past. The second book is The Shadow in the North, the third is The Tiger in the Well.
If you're wondering, my icon's quote is from the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson, a series of realistic fiction (by Louise Rennison) in diary format about a sarcastic British 14- to 16-year-old.

I know Artemis Fowl is in Spanish (don't know if they're all the books translated, though), but I never bought it as the edition is expensive. Maybe there are copies on the library.
I doubt the other ones are translated, but I'll check them anyway. Thanks ^^
