Looooooong Tsubasa poll part I: results

We already had 97 votes and it's been hours since it advanced. Therefore, I'll just close it down and start with the result analysis.

Part one: familiarity with canon

For the first question, we asked the fans if they are reading the manga, that is, the original canon by CLAMP. We got 57% who claim to be up-to-date with the spoilers concerning the newest stuff from Japan. Right now, we realize it was bad formulated. Do they read the raws with text translations, the Japanese volumes, or the scanlations? Perhaps a part of the fandom believes the latest scanlations on English are up-to-date with Japan, when they currently aren't (close enough, yet.) However, yeah, most of them know their stuff. 27% read the local licensed volumes (not only Del Rey, but any international release in any language), 14% have only read some chapters, and only 2% won't read it. basically, 95 persons who took the survey have at least once read some of CLAMP's canon, be it online or on paper.

I'm rather relieved, personally.

For the second question, we asked the fans if they're watching the anime badadaptation by Bee Train. 53% watch it religiously every week. After them, most of the other half have watched some, although most of them aren't glad with what they saw. 14 fans haven't watched the anime; half of them because they're not able to, and the other half is too horrified to dare.

The third question was about rating the plot in general over ten. We got a mean of 6.79 and a median of 7. That means that the fandom thinks it's good, although not the greatest thing. Except for 4 guys who thought it truly deserves a perfect 10.

Part two: about favorites

Let's go first with the favorite world. The votes were, in descendent order:

No surprise with the first place! Outo and its real mirror, Edonis, is a huge favorite because of the RPG and virtual reality experience. And it truly helps that some of the most beloved from the canonically dead CLAMP characters make important cameos in this world -ie, Seishirou from TB/X and Oruha from Clover. Also, it has a great turn of events. Now, what it really shocked me was the fact the fandom likes Clow, the origin country, so much. As a Clow country obsesee, I could point how fascinating their civilization and system is, along with the mysteries related to the ruins and Touya and Sakura's father, and why is Fei Wan Reed so interested in it. But maybe I'm taking the fandom for granted and they like it because of the cute S+S flashbacks or nostalgia or Touya's hotness or something. Who knows. The third place went to Jade, the one with the pretty clothes, a sly villain and a ghostly princess. How much do we love the twisted fairytales. Another surprise is that Yuuko's world also placed on the top five, even overcoming by a small difference the adrenaline-filled Hanshin. Pipe foxes and evil spirits pwned kudan fights, go figure.

And it made me laugh how the new world, that only has one chapter so far, has beated Koryo and Piffle!

With the non-basic worlds, nothing surprising on the votes. Meanwhile, Fye steals the spotlight on the fivesome, followed close by Kurogane. It's amazing how they seem to be more liked than the main couple and the cute mascot. I'm also delighted that, in Clow country, the old king got a fair amount of votes, considering he's dead and all -even more than Fujitaka, who has a better and clearer role on the flashbacks, woe. On the basic worlds, the ladies get the love; ethereal beauty and strange outfits are what makes the fandom drool. Nobody should be shocked that Fei Wan, our Bond-like villain, was ignored because of temporary 2-D. Antagonists, as we see through the worlds, will only get votes if they have a tangible ambition, depth and/or attractive (ie., Seishirou, Oruha and Kyle.) What I find surprising, though, is the lack of fans of the tank-boy. I was convinced he had some, personally...

Part three: introduction to fandom and random opinions

The thirteen question interrogates about the reason the fans started Tsubasa. The majority -a 37%- admits they just jumped at it because it's a CLAMP work, and they have a blind faith on their manga's quality. 17% was drawn by the Syaoran/Sakura fluff, 16% was drawn by a particular CLAMP cameo, 15% were reading because of the XXXHOLiC connection, and 6% believed the rumours about TRC being a CCS sequel: that means, at least 52% of the interviewed were strongly looking forward to see certain CLAMP characters again. The other 11% knows or cares not about CLAMP. Considering this, we can conclude the main audience were former or current CLAMP fanboys and fangirls, and not people from other fandoms.

The fourteen question deals with Bee Train and the animated series. The global idea in the results is that the company didn't make a perfect job: 33% sees the flaws but forgives them; 23% is not pleased, but tries to be positive since it could actually be worse; 13% thinks they seriously messed up with at least one character, be it physically or psychologically or both; 10% points the lack of realism when certain characters won't get wet, burnt or hurt no matter what they do; 5% is horrified of what they did with at least one subplot. The rest of the fans fluctuate to both extremes.

The final question was about the music. 48% is more than pleased. 32% likes Yuki Kajiura's music, but can't consider it adequate to the series. 19% is sick of the choir songs, "A Song of Storm and Fire" style. The remaining 2% just hates it altogether. All and all, we can see the soundtracks are well received.

P.S.: on your comments, please try to be civilized and avoid the wank. Nobody has the fault if you disagree with most people. Heck, my own votes are in some cases the opposite of the common opinion, but I try to respect the others. So don't insult any portion of the fandom. This poll was made out of scientific curiosity, if you will, not in order to point at laugh. Thanks.

But the problem is, there IS a character in that world called Tamayo. I'd like to assume it was Tomoyo, because you know, TOMOYO. But I can't.

Oh, but I had a lot of name misspellings through the whole thing -don't get me started on Primera...- But all of them were easy to identify, except this one because it's ambiguous.

It is Tamayo from Angelic Layer. She's best friends with Misaki...(forgot the last name >.>)

She is actually one of the announcers during the race, if I recall correctly. :)

Hmmm. It's really interesting; I didn't think there would be so much variety in the opinions. Maybe some fans are just easier to notice?

I'm also surprised that my votes weren't that different from the rest. For some reason I thought I was in the minority about most things. (Though maybe I'll have to wait till the next part... ^_^)

I did think more people would rate the plot higher than I did, but apparently a lot of fans are also reading it for the characters/crossovers/something other than the plot.

Yeah, I know. I thought we'd get a lot of OMGS+S!!one kind of feedback and we didn't. Even with the whole fascination with Sakura, she didn't ranked high enough for a main character -heck, even her dad got more votes. No, wait, now that I think about it, anyone on the Clow derivate chart kicked her ass on the poll, Kimi-kun and Kyle included.

Maybe it's what you say, and the rabid shippers are louder than the others. Or we just had a low representation of that sector on my poll and most of the people who voted were the smart ones. Who knows. It's the problem with statistics.

I kinda wish that Del Rey would put a survery in with one of the voluems or on their website like the japanese magazine did. I'm curious as to what the general populace thinks, rather than the secluded populace of the internet. I know that Tsubasa regularly sells in the top spots, and I'm wondering if casual readers in the US (and wherever else the Del Rey additions get published) share the opinions we do, or if they fall more where the original japanese poll did.

It really could be interesting, to know the opinions of the American and Canadian fans who are not in LJ fandom. The problem would be that Del Rey couldn't care less. It doesn't matter if x% of the readers like certain character; that doesn't affect their sales. If they run a survey, would be about the edition and not about the work itself.

And you have to consider most of the people who answer this poll aren't even North Americans to begin with. We have people from all continents, yay! This should have some influence.
