[CCS] Dolce vita (English)
Title: Dolce vita
Fandom: Cardcaptor Sakura
Pairing: Touya/Yukito, random mentions to Syaoran/Sakura
Genre: The fluff, it hurts!
Rating: PG for swearing
Summary: Yukito reflects on the candy he used to give Sakura. And then he makes a choice.
Length: +1200
Notes: This is an English translation of something I wrote in Spanish, so it might not flow well. Third-person POV is treated differently, and it's hard to reflect that in English sometimes. A present for
fairymage, not only for Christmas but also for paying my account and icons <3
Touya slowly dragged the cart through the hall, while Yukito was taking the items on his shopping list from the shelves. Rice, chicken, fish, carrot, soy sauce. They dodged a lady and her little son, who stared at them from inside her cart. Yukito waved his hand to the boy to greet him, and then continued his hunt, looking less and less like his original quest as they kept going on. Buns, donuts, chocolate chip cookies, mix for flans. He’s helpless, Touya thought to himself.
They arrived to the cash registers, where long queues of baskets and carts awaited. Both of them sighed and joined the one that apparently moved faster. Minutes passed by in relative silence. Touya tried not to think about the time he worked as a part-timer in that same supermarket, a job he found extremely boring. In order to distract his mind, he glanced at the selection his friend had picked.
He grabbed one of three identical plastic bags. That certainly looked familiar.
“Yuki.”
“Yeah?”
“These are the candies you throw at the monster every morning, aren’t they?”
“Oh, indeed!” Yukito grinned. “Those are from the same brand, the one with the cute little chick on the logo. Once I bought from Piffle Princess, but they’re a bit more expensive and taste more artificial to me.”
“But every candy has an artificial flavor, silly.”
“I know, but the Piffle candies are less tasty. The cheap ones are better. Remember how delicious is that microwave ramen we had the other day? It was so yummier than the one from the street restaurant, two blocks away.”
Touya agreed, sure, but he felt they were going off topic.
“The day after the first time I took you to school on my bike, you started to carry those candies with you. Was it because you noticed my younger sister usually goes with me through that same route to her school?”
“It wasn’t like that the first time, truth to be told,” he admitted. “I had a couple of them in my pocket that day and Sakura-chan looks like the kind of person who has a sweet tooth. I thought that was a nice detail for her, I don’t know. She looked so happy I continued to buy candies to throw at her.”
“Well, I’ll grant you that’s sweet...”
“Yeah, they’re sweet. I like the sugary ones better than the sour ones.”
“No, I meant that’s sweet of you.”
“Oh. Why thank you, To-ya.”
“But I believe,” Touya’s grin faded, “that could’ve hurt her partially.”
“Are you talking about cavities?”
“No, it’s not about cavities.”
Yukito lowered his eyes. Yes, of course he understood what Touya meant. Little Sakura would always hurry to meet them almost every morning, even to the point of sacrificing her breakfast or exhausting herself from the rush. And it wasn’t necessarily for the free candy, but that helped so much to make the experience so charming to her. The candy would make her feel special. All that would improve that attraction towards Yukito, and that would postpone everything further and further.
Nonetheless, Yukito would still bring her candy every day, never forgetting it. He also felt special throwing that sugary bundle of happiness to the girl. It was as though he had a little sister. Alright, he technically had a brother who’d gladly accept something in the tasty department as a present, but he didn’t know that back then. “Cerberus be damned,” Yue’s voice told him from the back of his mind. “He’s fat enough as he is.”
The point is that giving out candy and getting a smile in return did make him happy. It was something foolish and insignificant, but what a devastating effect. Besides, it had become a tradition already.
Touya nudged him. They had reached the cashier.

Once they had paid their groceries, they both marched to Yukito’s house carrying enormous bags. Yukito was still reflecting over those thoughts.
“I’m wondering whether I should stop giving her candy,” he told Touya. “She’s not a little girl anymore.”
“Yes, she is,” Touya affirmed with a fierce look in his eyes. Yukito ignored that.
“I’m saying she’s not a baby. She’s about to finish elementary school. She’s even found her special person already. It’s not right; Li-kun should be the one giving her stuff, not me.”
“Yuki, don’t you dare mentioning that goddamned name in my presence ever again, if you please,” Touya said, his face filled with anger. Yukito chuckled; To-ya’s sister complex was so amusing.
“I’d better do something else with the candy,” Yukito said, as he had made his mind. “What if I send one per day to Cerberus?”
“To the stuffed animal? God, no. He’s too fat and then he won’t shut up about it.”
“I agree.”
“You’re so cruel, Yue.”
“Just eat them yourself,” Touya went on as they passed through the door. “Don’t be an idiot; after all, you’ve always liked them.”
Yukito didn’t reply. They left the groceries on the kitchen table. Touya glanced at Yuki, who grabbed a bag of candy and opened it, pensive. He considered Yukito could be deciding what to do about the habit, and it was a good idea to leave him be with his thoughts at the time. They still had to do the Literature homework due next Friday.
“Look, I’m going to the study room to set things up, okay? I’ll see you there when you’re done.”
He turned around. Touya hadn’t even left the kitchen when Yukito called him with an insecure tone on his voice.
“To-ya, wait up.”
“What’s the matter?”
Right at the moment he turned his head, he saw Yukito’s arm drawing a small curve on the air. Touya raised his hands and caught the tiny projectile covered in pink wrapping paper. He stared at it for some seconds and then his eyes met Yukito’s.
Yukito smiled, uncomfortable.
“It’s just that it came to me I never offered you candy. Dunno... I don’t think they could hurt you, if you happen to like candy... Do you want them?”
Touya’s cheeks turned slightly pink. That’s how things with Yuki tend to turn out. When it comes to explanations or exchange of information, it seemed to be necessary to include food metaphors. Except, this time, it seemed to be also on a literal sense. However, he understood that was the way Yukito would use to try to tell him, every day, that he had him as the most important person.
Touya unwrapped the candy and put it in his mouth. It exceeded his expectations.
“They’re good.”
Yukito burst in laughter, relieved.
“I’m glad you think that way. Is one daily fine by you?”
Touya got closer, until they were in front of the other. He leaned until their lips joined. Yukito could feel the half-eaten candy resting in his beloved’s tongue. While Touya’s kisses were food for his heart, this one was by far –and literally- the sweetest one he had ever received from him.
“Yeah,” Touya whispered when they broke apart, and distractedly caressed the back of Yukito’s neck, “but don’t throw them at me. I’d prefer to get them right from your own hand. Understood?”
“Understood,” Yukito nodded and touched Touya’s forehead with his.
He definitely wouldn’t stop buying candy any time soon.
