She thought it was dorky enough when he had left that toy-like copy of a staff -with noises and lights!- in her reservoir room. Then again, this was Clow Reed.
That day, he had gone to Yuuko's house with bags under his eyes, but proudly showing her an oval shape before he even greeted her or Mokona. Yuuko examined it closer. She first thought it was an strange egg, but it was made with painted leather pieces sewed together and wasn't really that round inside. Also, there was a zipper on one side, tiny white wings made with felt sewed on the front and two straps made with a material she had no idea what could it be on the back.
It was like a mix between a trendy handbag and the bags travelers carry when they go to the wildness. And that's what she told him.
"You are most correct," he agreed, grinning. "It's something in between."
"Did you import this from England? It looks expensive."
He chuckled.
"Of course not; I made it, between yesterday and this morning. I haven't slept tonight, but I feel so accomplished."
"It's truly a matter of magic you can keep this flawless health with your excessive hobbies---"
"Same to you, dear Yuuko."
"Let's start again," she ignored his retort. "Do you need this bag?"
"No. Not my style."
"Pity; I'd pay to see you taking it to the streets. Are you making it for somebody else?"
"No. Not in this lifetime, no. And not this particular unit."
"Okay! Then is this one of your artistic outbursts?"
"Exactly! The backpack came to me during my nap and I couldn't get the idea out of my head."
A rather feminine and cute idea, Yuuko thought, but she bit her tongue.
"It doesn't look like anything I've seen before, but most of your work," and she didn't mean of the crafts variety, "is like that. It looks so well done. Good job, I guess."
"It's not perfect. I cut the first wing in a weird shape and I was running out of felt, so I had to cut the second one like that as well. They don't look at all like the way they were in my vision."
"Ah, so it's something from the future. I should've known. Sakura?"
"Sakura. I saw her with this bag, twice. She looked so adorable! The idea didn't leave my head, so I had to put it on fabric."
Clow always talked about his heiress like she was his baby. Then again, she was the same with her boy.
"You saw her twice with the packback?"
"Backpack. Yes."
"So it must've been her favorite bag, if she uses it so frequently."
"Oh, I don't know. The vision was from the same day. She was wearing the same clothes, even though she was in different places."
"Important day for the cards, huh?"
"...I'm not so sure. Not all my visions are about notable dates or events. And not all of them are about Sakura and the other Sakura and my creatures. Sometimes it's about... well," he doubted, "other people. I was just seeing through the eyes of two other persons, and they both happened to see Sakura that day, with the backpack. One holding it in her own house, one walking down the street. I also got fragments without Sakura that day, like a park bench, a ghost between the trees, and my-- well, his hands finishing the backpack she'd carry."
"So you saw through the future of the person who sewed that backpack in... well, the future?"
"Yes, and frequently. I've been to his wedding, I cried over a funeral he couldn't cry for, I checked an object he dug from the ground, I laughed when his son called him 'dad' for the first time. And for the other one, I got to see the nice garden his house overseas has, the first Valentine chocolate he received, the horrid hat he designed to match his robes..."
"Clow?"
"Hm?"
"You're not stalking the people around Sakura, are you?"
"Who do you take me for, Yuuko? A creep?"
"You know I've always taken you for a creep, Clow," she shook her head.
"I don't see through unborn people's futures, Yuuko. Unless it's in a global sense, of course."
"And how are a wedding and Valentine presents global? What about all those visions about Sakura doing things?"
He thought for a couple of minutes in silence.
"It's hard to explain, even to you," he finally said, smirking. "The visions about those two men come to me for a reason, just as Sakura's do. However, as the power gets equal my connection to them diminishes."
"What power?"
"Mine. Who else?"
"Equal to what?"
"Now I don't know what to do with this backpack," he changed the topic. Yuuko growled in annoyance.
"You could wear it and look ridiculous," she said in a rude tone. “How about making a horrid hat to match it as well?”
"Not my style. And I have plenty with my robes' pockets."
"Give it to your guardians, then."
"Cerberus' proportions don't fit it, and Yue wouldn't like it."
"If it comes from you he's bound to like it, Clow."
"He still would have problems with it: his hair is on the way. What about Mokona? I think they'd like it."
"Oh please, it's so big they can get inside of it."
"And they'd love that, wouldn't they?" he grinned.
"You have a lot of relatives and descendants. Isn't there anyone you could give it as a present?"
"Oh! Maybe Ruby... Nah, a heart shape would suit her better. I should write it down so he doesn't forget."
"Don't tell me you're sewing another bag."
"Not me. Not in this lifetime, no."
For Heaven's sake, the conversation was going in circles! Perhaps that Ruby person wasn't even born yet.
"Fine, if you can't think of anyone better, I'll keep the stupid bag. It might become fashionable in a couple of decades and can match it with some outfit. If not, I'll give it another use."
"Thank you, Yuuko."
"Don't get used to it. My cove of treasures isn't your storage room or your garage."
"Unless I want to keep my spare sake bottles in there, you mean?"
"You can put sake bottles in there, but they won't be yours anymore."
