First episode

Note to self: Don't carry Soel to uni often. Three kilos of laptop on your shoulders when you're a five-foot weakling will kill your back leik whoa.

So... the raw HAD to be released while I was sleeping. Of course. Don't you love it when that happens?

All and all, I give it a 7.5/10. It's still better than Tsubasa. Then again, what isn't.

Dude, the strings BGM makes me go back to the Magic Knight Rayearth anime. Which reminds me I loathed anime!MKR!Mokona. Coincidence? I think not. Hitsuzen!

While a lot of people is praising the ending and dissing the opening, I don't agree. 19 Sai gets catchier the more you hear it. Or maybe that's just me. It's on a loop inside my heaaaad. Meanwhile, an hour after the first watch, I had forgotten completely how the ending goes.

Opening checks:
- Black butterflies are so Bleach. Like I was saying Merche last night, are the Kuchikis related to Yuuko?
- The smoke going like a ribbon wheee.
- In order: ayakashi, red hortesia (the only canonical red thing in that animation, dude), spirits behind the slide door?, carnivore hand! (with exclamation point!), burning wing parasite (I thought it was a phoenix at first :P), toe-clipping monster, monkey's paw, mana tree (what's up with the red flowers again?), basilisk snake spirit (that joke NEVER gets old), some creepy shadows, more glittery butterflies (maybe the ones who flew out of that carpet?)
- The main guys look all cool in the opening. I don't like that blue kimono; that blue was known at my school as "public restroom blue".
- The shadows on Doumeki and Himawari have texture. Which reminds me of Gankutsuoh. Which is easy, considering Jun's voice. Did he have a déjà-vu?
- Karasu tengu!! <3 And giant eagle! But why are the suits ugly purple?
- Maru and Moro provide the fanservice to lolicon fans. As creepy as the first time.
- Kudakitsu---!! Shit, it's gone D:
- I don't know what's worst about Ame Warashi: the eggplant red hair or the fact she's all Mary Poppins.
- Zashiki Warashi with restroom blue hair and reddish eyes is so... yikes.
- That shadow of a bird just now...?

Still, it was so cool to see all those references to manga characters in the ending! Wee! Just for that, and ignoring the ugly red and blue use, it wins.

Now to the episode, Batman.

We start with a street full of people. Gray people. Or a) the animators were all artistic and wanted to symbolize the mundane sight, b) they were lazy or wanted to save some paint, or c) these people are made out of clay.

We see a bitter boy walking down the street. He's special, you see: he's the main character and we see him at least three times on the OP sequence. Therefore, he gets to be in color. It's not like there's a lot to paint, considering he's on his black and white uniform. Still, some flesh on the skin and blue on the eyes is appreciated.

Finally, bitter boy gets tired of walking through gray people, so he starts running. Then it seems he's going mad as he starts screaming like a maniac. But then, it's all explained when a purple glowing mass with eyes decides to attach to his back. "Kusoooooooo! kusokusokusokusokusoooo!" (That would be traslated as hoshit, says the Fangirl Japanese-to-slang English dictionary)

And with a reason he says hoshit, because more purple masses attach to him as he runs away. In the end, ayakashis make No-face in Spirited Away look like an amateur.

We have to thank P.I.G. (Production I.G) we didn't get trippy sequences like in the movie with the ayakashi. Moreover, it's amusing since the ayakashi are also sexually harrassing Watanuki and trying to grope and kiss bitter boy. No, seriously. You can see some lips and all XD And then, the manga scene in which he falls and hits the floor with his hand is exactly the same XD At this point, gray people watched how bitter boy is rolling on the middle of the street while screaming. Like you should say something! You're GRAY, asshats!

Bitter boy touches a blackish wooden face, and ayakashi dissapear. However, instead of fading, they are sliced in angles. Weird. We've arrived to the shop! Bitter boy glances at his hand.

EPISODE ONE: the phantom menace "HITSUZEN"
(lamest episode title frame evah: solid black background and white text)

Sounds ominious music, finally. Bitter boy is amazed by the house AND the soundtrack. He peeks, and what do we get? Inside the garden there are at least two cherry trees.

Yesssss. In blooooom. Like every dignified CLAMP series, we got our couple of sakura petals going around. Harharhar. Nice.

It seems bitter boy's legs want to see the sakura trees, so they start moving. The boy doesn't like it, and tries to pin them to the floor. As it doesn't work, he tried to run in the opposite direction. Obviously, it doesn't work. The script says you have to get in!

He pauses as the main door opens, and we get the lolicon bait zombie girls. However, unlike the movie, they act like their manga versions, and happily drag the boy inside.

The first time we hear the witch's voice it has an echo. Ohohoho very nice!

I dig the lilac slide door with butterflies. The kimono looks familiar, though ¬¬

The smoke looks like mist, all white. Odd. It's more like the dry ice effect than pipe smoking, IMHO. But we'll let it slide. I'm surprised the boy just coughed later on, when she smoked on his face. The room is filled with dry ice.

I really like the OST. A lot. The music in this scene is gorgeous.

The boy explains himself with a lot of gestures, while the woman smokes. Dude, I'm disappointed they cut the dictionary definitions!

When Watanuki gives his name, the lolicon bait dance and sing. LOL. And he blushes a bit when he gives his birthday. Sadly, we never get to see close-ups of the woman when she teases him, so the funny is lost quite a bit. She does make funny faces, but it looks so far away...

Although, we DID get the close-up when Yuuko says it's a fake name. With Watanuki spazzing in close-up at the same time. And she goes all ^_^ when she says Maru and Moro's names are cute. Love to that. And love to Watanuki's spazzes.

Now to the serious part. Yuuko looks cool. The sigil she uses is all multicolored O_o It's all in bronze, I think, with details in purple, wine red, blue, green. The moons are golden, the pseudo-yinyang things in orange, and the central eye in red. Yep, that's coloful.

Sigil goes around and creates whirls in water. Room filled with more dry ice smoke and wind. Flowing hair would look prettier if it wasn't for smoke covering it. Maru and Moro look heavily stoned. Watanuki is creeped out and gulps. Literally. It still looks cool. And the BGM pwns me.

Hah, Watanuki tried to get his watch back, but she was faster and closed her fist XD Then she put it inside a pretty box. She never tells the lolicon bait to take it you know where.

Hey, there are butterflies painted on the rooftop.

ROFL. Watanuki's movements. Now he fell on the floor.

Gratuitous take on the shop outside. Birds chirp, sakura petals fall everyone dies?.

When she says about souls, we didn't get the manga scene with her grabbing his soul going "mine!". A pity. But we got spazzic Watanuki in purple background with a spirit flying around him XD And God, is it funny to see him going backwards like a crab in animation until he hits the wall. Yuuko and the girls thought so, too, so they LOLed.

It all goes like in the manga now. The funny parts are amusing. Oh, Yuuko, good to see you with an actual attitude on the TV show. I still can't say a lot about the boobs since you were pretty much laid down during the whole episode and I can't tell.

***

Until this part, it was canon. Around ten minutes of episode. Good LORD.

For some reason, Watanuki is sent to the place we call in canon "the cove of treasures". An attic, if you will. Watanuki calls for someone, as I think he was sent to find a friend, and his hand leans on a case. It breaks, several objects fall, and so does he. Something black falls on him, places itself in front of him, and greets him with a PUU! MITAI NA!

Yeah, that was FUCKING IT.

And Yuuko doesn't really explains what the fuck Mokona is! "Mokona is Mokona!"

Well FUCK IT! That thing is not my beloved Larg, just as that thing in Tsubasa Crapnicle Chronicle is not Soel. It's not just the lack of explanation. It's because:

a) They were never said to be created by Clow in any anime canon. Clow gave them those names. Therefore, they're not Soel and Larg.
b) They're so OOC and annoying you want to kill those manjuus and never link them to Mokona Modoki.

I'm logical, right?

Actually, now that I think about it, they never call black Mokona "Modoki". Anime-only people is going to assume this one is only Mokona, while the Tsubasa one is Mokona Modoki. Just... almost the opposite of the uninformed part of the fandom, if you think about it.

Anyway, back to canon rape... baito-kun is forced to the most difficult test: going to the supermarket with Mokona without killing it off. I wouldn't have made it, if I was in his place. So, our errant knight leaves with his page, who happens to be shaped like a meatbun and Mokona Larg Modoki.

Eyecatch. Plagiarized from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Back to the streets with gray people, Watanuki walks with Mokona on the infamous bag. At least this doesn't look as feminine as the movie bag. Gray people dig the Mokona, because they're gray while Mokona is in color. Watanuki's cheeks decide to be even more colorful. Gotta love how the boy talks alone.

Inside the bag, Mokona rolls and then cries because it's the cute mascot, and yet, is ignored by the main character. Dude, seriously, what did you do to Larg?

Watanuki tries to drown the evil monster from the inside takes Mokona to drink water.

Inside the supermarket, a surviving Mokona bonds with bacon. Now that's true love, folks. Black manjuu/bacon OTP! I can see there are some cans inside the shopping basket, so Yuuko is so getting beer next episode. Mokona is so badly animated its mouth is black inside in some takes.

Watanuki then sees a stalker ayakashi on aisle 4. Guess what it's on ayakashi's grocery list. Yep. Watanuki itself. Dinner is unfazed and ignores the stupid predator. I don't get it, man: you seemed more concerned about gray people mocking you than an ugly purple thing with a gigantic eye!

Ayakashi stalks Watanuki down the street. Watanuki prefers to ignore it again, maybe hoping it'll go away soon. You know, I don't believe in fairies, so I won't clap for them. Meanwhile, Mokona has an orgy with the bacon and the vegetables inside the bag, so Watanuki tells it to knock it off; its orgasmic giggles are gross.

Four girls are walking down the street. Watanuki decides to follow them, not because they're hot, but because they're also in color. So we got the boss girl, the three friends following her, Watanuki following them all, and the ayakashi following Watanuki. Now this is serious stalking.

I read somewhere that the girl is saying a spirit is stalking her and she's just posing so the girlfriends go all "LEIKOMG!". I bet she hears Evanescence, reads Anne Rice books and has a MySpace account.

Anyway... drama queen goes to a corner, pretending she's crying because of her oh-so-paranormal life and saying she was just pushed by an eeeevil spirit. If I were Watanuki, I'd go "Bitch, please" and mock her on my journal. But alas, I'm not. Watanuki checks her neck and sees nothing creepy on it. So he interrupts the girls.

Watanuki: Excuse me, but you're alright. There's nothing following you, I checked twice. So don't cry. *insert patented Clow smile here*
Girl: STFU n00b! u have no idea what ur saying! ur a liar and a poser and i'm the one who can feel spirits while ur a normal boy! so leave me and my posse alone! kthxbye! *has a fit*
Lemmings: u made our friend cry u meany! u suck cuz u flamed her!
Girl: u know what? let's not reach his level. let's be all mature about it. i hope ur happy now with ur normal life.
Watanuki: *being sexually harrassed by stalker ayakashi* O RLY?
Ayakashi: YA RLY
Mokona: TAKOYAKI! *runs away to food stand*
Lemmings: OMGWTFBBQ!
Watanuki: MOKONA! *runs to reach it* *touches poser's shoulder*
Ayakashi: *leaves Kimihiro and sucks drama queen like a lollipop* PWNED
Watanuki: NO WAI!!!1!
Girl: *with Ayakashi harrasing her* Durrrrr. *leaves with friends*
Mokona: Takoyaki! <3
Ayakashi: LOL
Watanuki: *emo* WTF

Back to Yuuko's house, we find her doing a huge puzzle. I guess Watanuki complains because he sort of suspects this supermarket charade was just a plan of Yuuko so he sees there are some masochistic people who wished to be a freak like him, and now that girl has to be sucked by a ayakashi because of him getting close to her. Or something. Watanuki says he's leaving. Yuuko touches his face and says something about happiness. That makes him even more emo, since the girl told him something about happiness as well.

Then I can't really explain since they talk, and Watanuki tries to leave, but in the end he changes his mind and returns, perhaps because something Yuuko said.

Ending checks:
- The music is nice. It doesn't kill me, either. I'm sort of neutral to it.
- It shows the opening ate all the budget.
- We only get to see Mokona -or the thing they call Mokona- dancing and singing at the rhythm of the ending on a black background, although most of the time it's lying on the floor sleeping.
- It's sort of cute, though.

NEXT EPISODE: lying woman!
- Black smoke and ring will be there.
- Himawari will be there
- Yuuko is in a green and purple dress. Boobs look a bit ugly but not remotely as ugly as movie!boobs. Or maybe it's the angle.

In general, I'm very unhappy with the Mokona issue and the lack of connections to TRC and CCS and MKR and... yeah. I'm indifferent to the poser girl filler, maybe because it pains me they resorted to turn Watanuki emo so early in the show. The animation is fine; could be better, but it's still way more decent than Bee Train's. The music is gorgeous. The characterization is good in everyone BUT Mokona. The atmosphere was spot-on. Besides those changes, it's good. But I mourn my beloved Larg. I wonder if we'll get to see Sakura's staff next week... I lost my hopes on ANY crossover.

This took me three hours to type. WTH.

Aaagh, I want to see it but I'm still at work. T_T And then I'll have to go straight to the airport.

The Mokona thing kills me. Even if they decided to magically forget about Clow (gaaah...), they can't ignore Mokona's importance. They. Just. Can't. They're sending the overall plot straight to hell.

*hugs her manga copies*

P.S. - who wants to bet they'll pull a CCS and cut out the Clow plotline, but leave all the stupid foreshadowing?

While I was re-re-rewatching the episode with my boyfriend, he spotted something interesting at 12:17. Look at the lowest part of the screen xP

O_____O

However... that doesn't mean they're going to give it importance. I mean, it's besides all those movie cameos, after all.

*prefers to be a fatalist and not to expect anything*

I'm TOTALLY with you on liking the OP better than ED... in fact, I thought Reason was so off of XXXHOLiC's mood, unlike 19 Sai which is just looooove.

I think you will get your CCS connections (a bit of them) next episode ^^

We agree in many points, like the lame title frame, the awesome soundtrack, Mokona being annoying sometimes, the Cherry tree, the mist smoke from Yuuko's pipe, the lack of the dictionary explanations (they let Watanuki MAD ! And in one of them she mentioned X's kekkais u.u).

However, I liked it a LOT... and I think I would give a higher grade than yours ^^" Like, 9/10

[identity profile] eotheod.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched it yet (woe ;_;) but reading this made me late to class. XD

Don't you realize? There is a giant cult out there that devises ways to destroy any modicum of hope that you might have ever had for any of the animes (the Mokona branch is especially talented).

[identity profile] katharos-8.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
I am still happily fangirling over the fact that it is PRETTY. And the characters have actual facial expressions which CHANGE, and Watanuki is still a spazz and the animation actually made me laugh. There are things that make me bitter (mostly the same points as you) but I am going to happilly bask before I get cynical. And take screencaps.

You should wait a couple of days, if you're not in a hurry. I'm screencapping the episode in the near future.

[identity profile] katharos-8.livejournal.com 2006-04-07 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
too late. *grin* I just got this nifty thing called media player classic that actually saves your caps direct to folder, instead of keeping having to paste to photoshop as with Power DVD. Which means I went back to the folder after my first runthrough and went 0.o at the number of pics I'd got. Including a large number of semi identical Watanuki and Yuuko expressions. It's just he's so cute! And she's so sultry! And how many images have I got of Watanuki in various amusing poses now...?

*cough* Yeah. But it would be cool to see your screencaps - my approach is, I admit, very rough and ready. XD

But PowerDVD also has that option! *did the movie with PowerDVD*

do not tell me this now

At least they fixed Yuuko's boobs. Her boobs in the movie FREAKED ME OUT. And I agree with you on most of those points.

I think I will a anime-Mokona-thing/bacon OTP. And an Ayakashi/Watanuki OTP.

I can't understand why people would prefer the ending. the opening has a better song, better rythm... Hell the opening is cool, while the ending just shoes Mokona. I wanna see Doumeki... ;-;
And you're right, 19 Sai gets catchier the more you hear it. I can't seem to find it on the net, so I'm repeating the opening video... That's geeky XD
