A story of fate and trust

I'm not going to say names or fandoms yet. Probably a couple of you will know what fandom this is about just with the provided hints, or just because you've heard me talking about this. But still, whether you know this tale or not, I want you to read this.

Just read the story of these two characters, without judging them until I tell you so.

Once upon a time, a silent heroine came down to that world, following a prophecy and followed by monsters. When the time came, she fought valiantly with warriors against demons, and lastly faced the beast that killed many innocents and destroyed her domains. However, she was there too late, and she died over a stupid accident. She became a legend between the mortals, though.

Years later, that beast's seal was broken and it returned to cursing the world. She was revived because she was needed. She seemed weaker and more naive in that new reincarnation, though. A young kid who was around willingly became her sidekick because it was convenient to him. And so, they go forth to fight evil.

On the way, they met a strange man with a cocky attitude who asked too many questions. The reckless heroine, who never said no to a good fight, challenged him. She won, but he seemed disappointed because her powers weren't what they used to be. Both her and her friend seemed surprised the man knew her from before; whether she actually remembered him somehow was never said by her or in the story itself. Also, the man seems too friendly in speech, even looking like he's flirting with her.

The man assured them he could see the future, and proved it by foreseeing them falling to a river in a short-term time. It came true, by the way.

Later on, they met him again. She's again challenged by him, and yet again she's mocked by him even if she had won. The power, he said, wasn't enough to destroy her enemy. That didn't stop him from doing another stupid prediction, and ask them about an item he needed. Annoyed by the man's attitude, the sidekick decides they should get to that item first. And so they work their way to it, just for the item to be snagged by few seconds by the mysterious man, who had done nothing to help them anyway.

Soon, the time had come to fight her enemy. The man showed up, and used that item to annul the barriers between the monster and her. But in the end he gets to be kept outside the barrier, laughing: in a way, he had deceived them, but they had to get in anyway after all. The heroine defeats the evil, but they discovered it was just the tip of the iceberg.

And so the main characters went through the country, saving more people and handling the evil demons tormenting humans. Occasionally the man would pop in and out, offering them advices or snarky comments or silly prophecies. He never fought with her again, or talked bad about her abilities. He was just there for short conversations, usually targeted at the sidekick. The boy thought the man was twisted, and probably wanted to destroy her. The man seemed amused, as all he truly desired was getting the path to get to a certain place. Or so he said.

Doom grew near the duo, and they found themselves near an abandoned ship of myths. The ultimate evil lurked inside. The sidekick decides to part ways, as it was too much for him to handle and his goal was already obtained. She insisted him to make her company. The kid refused. The man appeared from nowhere and intervened: it wasn't the kid's fate to come with them (the heroine and the prophet man) inside the ship. He, on the other hand, was ecstatic: the ship would be his path, so he also had to go inside. And so, they both got in, the sidekick left behind and considering to follow the man's last advice.

She got distracted with the old enemies now boarding the ship. When she gets to the last chamber, she finds the man fighting the ultimate enemy, the lord of the demons. He was having a hard time, as he was no match. He turned to her:

"There you are, [her name]. I thought I could handle this before you arrived. But it seems I have met my match. Heh heh... This brings back memories, [nickname]! Remember when we faced [first baddie] together on [place where she comes from]?"

The dark lord then noticed her, and sucked all her powers, leaving her useless. Then it attacked, but then the man holds his remaining weapon to block the damage directed at her. He was willing to stand firm in the battle, as her people had been killed by that monster and the blame was most partially on him. He had to atone for his indirect sin, and take revenge. Then, he last directed at her. He reveals to the audience he was the one who had made that first prophecy regarding the way to kill the first baddie.

"That's what I told you. And you waited for me without question. You waited patiently in this land of mortals... You waited for the day that [person] was born. You believed in me despite knowing that I count myself among the ranks of the accursed [his nation] who had escaped from [place where he came from]. I was deeply moved by your earnest spirit. This is why my faith in you has not waned since that faithful day when we engaged [first baddie] in battle side by side. [her name], you must return to [her home]. You must do so in order to bring peace to this world!"

After saying this, he was defeated and thrown down the void. She stared in horror. Then she screamed enraged at the enemy, and fought it until she got her powers back and finally defeated it (with a lot of help from her old friends).

But right after that, the man returned almost in one piece. Of course, he had always been her ally, and he was looking for that path just to take her home after that fight. She's sincerely happy he made it back. Hell, she actually glomped him and showed an unusual tenderness -although she's usually really sweet when she's not fighting anyone actually, but the display of affection in that scene was rare from her. And thus, he takes her back to her world in the ship, and they sailed together.

**********

That's the story. If you read the last part without knowing who the characters are, and how they look like, doesn't it sound romantic or filled with subtext? It does to me. He's devoted to fate and to amend his past, but he's also very devoted to her -platonically or not. They have a history together. And the ending would leave them with a open, almost-fluffy ending, perfect for pairing them up.

The thing is... shipping this is kinda very wrong.

She's not a human. She doesn't even takes a humanoid form in the whole story. She doesn't even have a gender. She's using the avatar of a genderless wolf on earth. Hell, in the glomping scene I'm describing above, it just looks like a doggie friendly licking its master's face; it's not even trying to be sexy, it's just cute. But if you consider she's the higher being in her world and not an animal... I don't know.

I'd ship this. I'd have to assume she can take a humanoid form, because she's a god and maybe it's possible for her when she has full powers. Because bestiality is just... no plz noes. The Japanese fandom assumes this a lot, so I don't feel that guilty.

Still, do you think I'm crazy for considering this a potential good couple?

(ETA: By the way, if you read the comments you'll get spoiled about the identity and fandom of these two, The whole thing seen alone is a fat spoiler of the whole fandom, but if I tell you what fandom I'm spoiling you beforehand, my whole rhetorical question is not valid anymore)

I didn't read the whole thing but I don't think it is wrong to like this couple. Admittedly I've become very open with what relationships I liked over the years but keep in mind that this is fantasy. If you are worried that it will be viewed as Zoophilia well I don't think so. Even if the character is in an animal form the character has a human like personality am I right? You probably like this couple because of the interaction not because it is a human and animal getting together.

It's not what other people think of me for shipping this. It's just a part of me freaking out because I'm shipping a guy with a wolf, even if it's just a physical issue. I'm sure this would have a lot of shippers if Amaterasu wasn't a lupine.

I'm not sure how human her personality is, actually. The character never talks because the game has heavy Legend of Zelda influences, so you never know what she's thinking. Her actions look rather animal-like, but you can't blame her since she's been in a wolf body for more than a hundred years. I just believe she has a very sentient mind because she's the main god and stuff.

Well I just meant you are not into the pairing because you are turned on by a wolf and a man but because you like the story between them. Although this is what I am assuming from your post. And I do think fantasy should be viewed differently than RL situations of course. Not like we would have this example in RL. :)

I knew it was Okami ♥!

I'd have to assume she can take a humanoid form, because she's a god and maybe it's possible for her when she has full powers

YES PLEASE.

And you're not that crazy ♥ IT'S FATE1!11!11

MUST. PLAY. OKAMI. *NOW* Dx

I'm sorry, but could you please stick a spoiler warning on this? I didn't know what I was reading until I got to the end and now I am sad. :(

Aww, dammit.

But see, I can't put a spoiler warning without revealing the fandom, and if I reveal the fandom from the beginning, the whole point of the post ("here, read this story without knowing about the characters at all. does it make sense to ship them? yes? well, it's very wrong actually") is moot.

If it helps, which I doubt, I hid and omitted a lot of layers so the spoilers weren't entirely bad. And I didn't think anyone in my flist would care about being spoiled for Okami, from all fandoms.

I don't see how shipping a man with a god in a wolf's body is any worse than shipping a boy with a duck, and I feel no guilt over that. *points to icon* :D

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! And the thing about Tutu is I want Ahiru to stay a duck not change back into a girl (because that is her true self) like a lot of the fandom wants. Of course I envision Fakir as a virgin hermit but that is something else entirely. XD

I for one would like a crossover with Ranma 1/2, and Fakir falling in the springs of the drowned duck. PROBLEM SOLVED 8)

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Such a cute idea! Actually I like the idea of Fakir becoming a duck more than Ahiru becoming a girl. XD

And hell, by the own nature of the series, with the fourth wall totally destroyed, people wouldn't even have to make a REAL crossover. We can have, uh, Fakir finding Ranma 1/2 volumes somehow (I suggest Autor being a closet manga fanboy), and then Fakir writes himself finding such springs IRL. And done, without having to think of fights with martial arts schools of ballet or Ranma freaking out over Mr. Neko's family.

XDDD I knew that there had to be another fandom of mine with something similar, but I didn't remember it was Tutu XDDDDD (and incidentally I like Fakir/Ahiru, too)

Still, Princess Tutu does have a normal fandom. Okami doesn't, and it's more filled with gamer fanboys who don't see subtext anywhere. So I'm left alone thinking if the Japanese fandom and I are just odd or what, since I don't seem to find fellow Western shippers (the other big pairing for her is this human dude who can turn into a wolf, so their shippers can feel less "guilty" over it)

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't sounds particularly shippy to me, but that might be because it's just facts and not the actual thing.

But I really don't see why anyone could think it's wrong. It's not a guy and a wolf, it's a guy and a goddess. With all my mythology and fairytale background, I can't see anything wrong with it at all.

[identity profile] paper-seagulls.livejournal.com 2007-06-13 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ama never really was shown to like Waka... or even remember her past friendship with him, except maybe at the very end. There's was so much back story that was never detailed on about that I was hoping for a sequel or prequel or something that will never happened.

However, if there is one, I can't help but think that Waka, loyal retainer to Ama as he appears to be, would get paired up with what's-her-face moon girl so that they could... oh, I dunno. Rebuild their civilization, I guess. They were the only two known living members left of their species.... right?

*sigh*

No he visto los comments y no tengo idea del fandom, pero visto así de lejos me parece un buen pairing. No es como si fuese el lobo de Yuzuriha en x/1999 (que no recuerdo el nombre) ^^U

To me, it's not odd at all to ship person/wolf-god with theoretical human form. Then again, I ship boy/duck (Ahiru/Fakir) and girl/rat (Youko/Rakushun) without thinking much of it either. XD;
