I never shipped anything in LOTR. No het, no yaoi, nothing. I mean, LOTR isn't really about romance at all, the books at least. It just doesn't read that way at all for me, there's too much stuff going on with the actual plot for shipping... if that makes sense. I loved Legolas' and Gimli's friendship... I just don't see it romantically at all xD But I would say that it's based on much more than mutual love of orc killing. I mean:
"Then Legolas repaid his promise to Gimli and went with him to the Glittering Caves; and when they returned he was silent, and would only say that Gimli alone could find fit words to speak of them."
And they presumably spent the rest of their lives together, and definitely left for the West together. I think they definitely loved each other, but in a platonic way, after being comrades for so long and learning so much from each other.
