~Dear You~

God, just amuse me and post anything there. Not necessarily about me, I just want to read anything. And as usual, I never know what to say to people on my flist who have a thread there D: I'm such a bad ljfriend.

Oh, and any recs for a manga/anime series in particular you think I could like? I've started Aria (well, I've read all of Aqua) out of curiosity, and it's so pretty and relaxing and cute. I'm surprised I'm liking it.

PS: Laurus, even if you guys aren't done with that action post, can we start one for Spinel-Eriol? We can leave it vague enough so it won't contradict any conversation it might spawn in the other one.

I'm going on a work trip from tomorrow till Sunday. D:

We can start it today and continue when I come back, or start it next week and backdate it. Whatever you prefer. I'll be online today, anyway.

Ah, then we better do it next week. I'll be at school till late tonight, and I might not have connection on the Linux partition (and I have to do my lab assignments in that one).

Either way it has to be backlogged so...

Okay then. :)

Recs, eh? Hmmm...

I definately recommend Hunter x Hunter if you like fun, slightly unusual shounen with brilliant characterisation. It's hard to describe without giving anything away, but it's really inventive and doesn't fall into that repetative fight-em-up pattern that the rest do (in fact, it reminds me a little bit of OP). And the characters ♥ I fell in love with them all by about chapter 20. There's quite a lot of gore and a distinct lack of female characters in the first 100-or-so chapters, but if these don't bother you I'd recommend it!

and now I'm off to watch the last Mononoke arc :P

Oh Jesus, Hunter. Actually, I have read at least 10 volumes of that thing, and I actually stopped because it wore me out. I had the exact opposite reaction, actually. I was liking it just fine at the beginning, but then it got all "blah blah chi blah blah training blah blah wow that person's chi is awesome blah blah" (personally? I find chapters and chapters of training as tiresome as Dragonballesque fights). There also might be the issue of me keeping with it because I really wanted to know more about Kurapika's revenge and Hisoka's organization, and even moar Leorio, but the mangaka just kept giving me... yes, Gon and Killua TRAINING THEIR CHI ONCE AGAIN.

(Incidentally, I stopped reading during that videogame island arc, when they were going to TRAIN with this lady that looked like a girl. Maybe it got better afterwards. But really, it wasn't any better than Dragonball or Bleach to me when I left...)

LOL yes, Gon and Killua and all the nen training stuff ^^ They do a fair bit of that in Greed Island (kudos to you for getting that far, btw), but we still don't see much of it and there's a little side story about a bloke who blows people's heads off... I can't really tell you if it gets better because that's around where I am at the moment (only they've finished the training and are now looking for cards), but the Genei Ryoudan have turned up again and I think the training thing's done for the moment (I think... 0_0).

I guess it's a matter of personal preferance though :D I'm fine with training scenes, it's just over-long 'I'M ONLY USING 5% OF MA POWER!!!' fights that bore me in shounen *coughDBZcough*

You know, I just realized that my favorite shounen series are lacking in the training department, or have only have it like twice. I know trainings and powerups are part of the Jump experience, but sometimes they drag so much, and it's like the main characters spend all their afterbattle/free time back to training again. I didn't mind it in Rurouni Kenshin, for instance, because they weren't that long and there was also this better character development than "LOLZ HAX OVER 9000!". And really, they even had flashbacks in between for Kenshin and Sano's training pre-Shishio, and since I'm a sucker for backstory...

However, in Bleach or Dragon Ball Z or HxH, they're like gazillion chapters doing the same fucking training with just a different master or location, and 90% of it is just focused in the main character, and showing off how 1337 and advanced he is now. Minor characters, unless you're Vegeta or one of Goku's boys, just get a fleeting mention that they did their training off-screen. In the best of the cases they'll have an Uryuu with a couple of pages, or an Orihime-and-Chad-with-Yoruichi post-training page. The issue is when you read it more for secondary characters, and you get fucking sick of seeing the protagonist's face for +20 redundant chapters.

Sure, being more 1337 out of the blue is irrealistic, but since most trainings in shounen are already... I guess it's a cliché I'm not fond of.

Anime series hmm, well this season has been pretty dry. I am enjoying Ghost Hound and Minami-ke but I am not sure if either are OMG must watch these type of shows.

I've also been watching Haibane Renmei on the side and I think you might like that if you haven't already seen it. It's different from your normal anime and is full of symbolism.

It doesn't have to be this season's ^^

I've been meaning to watch Haibane for a long time, but I always forget to check for it. Thanks for reminding me!

Yeah I know but it is just easier for me to think of what to recommend when it is something I am watching at the moment because it's on my mind.

Edit: Oh and there is also the Girl Who Leapt Through Time Movie. It's a must see!

I understand ^^ But still, there was a lot of stuff going on last season, and I'm just barely finishing it these days. (Mind you, I went through the Gurren ending last week or something, and I think I have one or two LoveCom episodes unwatched.)

I was prefering series because anime movies can take a while to get, and if they're licensed in the US it's even harder. A series you can get it in stream sites sometimes. A movie I have to download because my local videorent club sucks. I do have The Girl Who Leaped Time in my to-watch list, though, along with everything by Satoshi Kon and the Ghibli movies I still haven't watched. Is it The Girl subbed yet, by the way? They haven't licensed it?

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2007-11-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
It is subbed and it hasn't been licensed yet. I am actually thinking of uploading it on my journal during the Christmas holidays.

Well with series from last season I loved Terra e and while I am not finishied with them Dennou Coil and Baccano have been amazing (especially Dennou Coil but I know you've already started watching that). Baccano is also lot of fun though with a lot of memorable characters.
