After this stupid, borderline masturbatory, obligatory fangirl comment, I have something with more coherent to say. What I like about Haruhi's crush is the fact it's not about "ooh, pretty!" or anything. If you think about it, Haruhi has seen him (and the entire host club) wearing practically anything. She's seen Tamaki shirtless or smiling in ways that make girls' panties drop themselves since day one. And still, the reaction used to be "...what a retard" for a while. Of course, there are possibilities he wasn't her type, but if you think about it, in the club has almost all kinds of pretty boys (and girls!) and she never had second thoughts about anyone. My point here is, she's never been the kind of girl who'd come to the realization that "oh, this person is hot" and have a sensuality awakening. No, absolutely not. Even now, in her confused state, she wouldn't think of Tamaki as pretty and not because of her (not so much) denial.
You just know it's about the inside. You just know that if Takami looked average or ugly (...although then the plot would be impossible, because you know... king of host club) or different, Haruhi would've still got to love him the same. Because really, she's never shown explicit hints of finding him attractive in looks whatsoever. She never blinked at him taking his shirt off or making physical contact with her until... until she noticed he had become the person she admires the most. And she got to admire him by knowing him, by understanding why he behaves like that and the wonderful traits he has, by seeing he has more than flaws, and that he's actually one of the sweetest, bravest persons she could ever meet, even if he is childish and a complete dork.
I don't know, it makes me happy. It wasn't a matter of picking the prettiest bishie or the guy who's more compatible with her. Because she probably was indifferent to his good looks, and found him asphyxiating and sometimes irrational and ignoring her personal space. She loves him not because he's cute, not because he's a Suoh, not because he's a romantic. It's because of his heart. That's how Haruhi rolls. And that's why it was so hard for her to like a person even with so many people falling at her feet. I'm not sure how frequently it happens in shoujo, but I think it's ideal for Ouran IMO, if it had to go through romance.

I want to add something. When I meant "hottest guy", it was in a subjective way from the main character's point of view -as in, them choosing the one they find better looking. Because really, pinpointing objectively the prettiest possible love interest in a harem/reverse harem story is impossible. (Funny enough, physically speaking I'd prefer someone like Kyoya, but the character I fell for was Tamaki.)
I think Bisco herself was saying that the most compatible with Haruhi was Mori, right? I wonder now if she was making a point for Tama/Haru transcending differences, or it was just a red herring.

Yeah, Mori is most compatible with Haruhi, and it's been shown on several occasions in the manga, too. But really, Mori is too preoccupied with Hunny. XD; Not necessarily from a yaoi POV, but just even as friends, Mori is too busy with Hunny to feel anything for Haruhi. xD I don't think it was a red herring--it's the truth. Tamaki and Haruhi just work for reasons that defy logic. 8DDDb
