Some CLAMP thoughts

1. I've noticed it before, but it was obvious again last night. You know, I've never actually cried over a CLAMP manga. Not matter how depressing or unfair it is, no matter if it's my favorite characters dying like flies, no matter how touching someone's story is, no matter how attached to the characters I am.

I don't know, man. There must be something in their stories. Even if someone in HOLiC kicked the bucket, even if I love all the cast, I wouldn't cry. I just know it. I'd pout and mope, but I can't see myself in tears.

And before you guys call me OMGinsensitive, I've cried over lots of fandoms, for both good and bad things. Last week Godot and the Feys made me cry, for instance. Just with the eye water from One Piece and Furuba alone I could fill a bucket. So I wish I knew why CLAMP tragedies leave me so emotionally empty inside.

2. Clow Reed and Sakura (any of them)'s powers have a lot of bird feather symbolism/motives. Fei Wang puts a bat emblem on even the tiny whiskey cups. Remember all the X artwork with bird wings opposing to bat wings? I'm guessing that means antagonism in CLAMP art.

Yuuko also has a winged symbol: the butterfly (effect).

3. By the way, will the old man who received the shadow Clover birds make a comeback? It would be neat if he had a part in all of this with a very strange twist (and not the obvious possibility), but I wonder if it was just them fucking with our minds and he has nothing to do with FWR. Or he was supposed to, but they forgot...

You know, I have the same thing with number 1. I mean... it's like the characters just don't reach me like others from different series can. idk. It makes me sad but not like OH GOD WHHHHHY :/ ah well

The thing is, some CLAMP characters DO reach me. But I still can't seem to cry over them for some reason. I've cried for characters in other fandoms I'm less emotionally involved with than the CLAMP ones.

OMG YOU HAVE NO SOUL!11

Pfft. I should let you borrow some of my 'CRYOVERTHEMOSTRIDICULOUSTHINGS' powahs.

Re: 2: And TRC!Sakura's wing symbol thing, the one that shows up in the ruins and all, is circular just like FWR's bat symbol.

AM I A CLONE MADE BY FEI WANG, THEN?!1!

Actually, I'm such the crybaby IRL. And depending of the fandoms.

But see, I didn't include that one because I'm not sure who put it in there. Was that a spell put by someone to trigger things? If so, was that FWR, Clow, king Clow, some ancestor of the Clow royal family...? But yeah, it's connected to the Sakuras anyway, so I guess that includes the bird wing theme.

I agree about #1. There's just so much angst that I can't seem to bring myself to be upset over any of it. XD;

I don't know, I've been affected to tears with over-the-top angst in some other fandoms. And not even in my first days with CLAMP and manga, with everything was so new and original, and people losing eyeballs was TEH SHOCKZ, and I actually liked the angst over 9000, I felt upset/happy enough to cry over anything.

I guess it depends of the delivery. And in some series like Saint Seiya, the OMGsrsbizness angst makes me giggle and mock it XD CLAMP doesn't even get the lolz.

I've never cried over CLAMP works either. I'm usually very sensitive, but with CLAMP... it's either very happy, or so much that it's more of a shock. The Kazuhiko/Oruha storyline was the closest thing to make me cry with CLAMP, but it happened so slowly that it was more of a resigned sadness than an oh-no-I'll-burst-into-tears thing.

Then again, apart from sensitive I'm pretty random with my crying. I didn't cry when any of my favourite characters died in HP, but I did get all teary-eyed with the Resurrection Stone thing, for example. I didn't cry at all with FMA, which has really moving storylines; but things as different as Heroes 1x17 and Princess Tutu's finale had me bawling. I don't know, I stopped trying to figure out if there was a pattern a while ago.

Oruha was so known beforehand (I mean, we knew she was dead before she was introduced, and she kept going at it subtle) I couldn't feel that sad. It was extremely easy to be resigned, and kind of waiting for it to happen already. And I LIKE Oruha a lot, mind you.

With FMA, I cry more with rereads. It's kind of odd, I don't know.

I cry easily over TV and movies (& books ^_^;;;) too - and yeah, I also have a curious lack of crying over CLAMP. Maybe it's that atmosphere of "sparkly shojou bishie melodrama"? I'm not sure.

Though, the one and only CLAMP work I have cried buckets over is Tokyo Babylon. Especially the chapter 'Old' (oh, God, the banana scene...*bawls eyes out*). And Hokuto's death hit me harder than any fictional death I can think of (a real "punched in the guts" reaction that I never got with any other character).

I knew about Hokuto before starting TB, so even if she's one of the things in CLAMP that hit me the most and one of the deaths that made me go "why the fuck did you do that for, you twit?!" at the character (the other being Kujaku), I wasn't as affected as I should've.

I agree some stories in that manga (Old, the mother summoning the inugami, the one with the gaijin because I identify with it) are so heart-breaking, and along with the Shirahime-syo ones and some in HOLiC are a good example of CLAMP's best storytelling. Still, I only went "aww".

I agree. I've never actually cried in a CLAMP manga.. though I teared up a little bit during the Ashura/Yasha thing in TRC. I guess maybe that's why they're my OTP in TRC LOL XD

Heh, if I were to cry at something at TRC, I'd probably be over my second OTP (Kurogane's parents), so I see your point XD

[identity profile] soifon.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeaaah! The Kuro-mama/papa arc is definitely cry-worthy!
