Police Department: Criminal Affairs OfficeAround 4:00 pm
“Excuse me, Fräulein. Would you be so kind to direct me to Detective Skye’s desk?”
“Oh… ah… buh… I-it’s that one,” the woman pointed with her finger, most likely flustered by Gavin’s smile. “But Ema isn’t back from the investigations yet, s-sir.”
“Danke, love.”
She’d already left the crime scene and she’s not picking up her cell phone, he thought while walking toward her desk. She was definitely up to something again, perhaps involving vital evidence subjected to some strange powder or spray. It’s pretty much a constant riff when jamming with Skye, along with getting the reports late and having to prod her into finishing them. Speaking of which…
Klavier stared at the desk. It surely was tidier than his office, but there was more than one thing odd about it, starting with the test tubes and tiny bottles filled with suspicious liquids and ending with the Pink Princess gashapon. (Seriously, who puts collectible toys as decoration in a work area? That’s the kind of thing you keep to your home or under lock so they’re not stolen. Just like his deluxe 12-inch Jammin’ Ninja figure back at his penthouse’s living room.)
The computer was turned off. He sighed, and still went through all the papers around, in hopes one of them could be the report he was waiting for. Perhaps Skye was the kind of person who did the paperwork first and had fun later.
…She wasn’t, though. Predictably, the report wasn’t any of them.
Bored from the idea of wasting almost half an hour on the way to his office –twenty minutes on motorcycle, give or take-, he sat on her chair and sighed. Then he opened the drawers because the curiosity was just too strong.
First drawer: filled with spare pink glasses for Luminol tests. Not surprising
Second drawer: filled with Snackoos bags. One of them had been opened. The temptation was too strong to pass.
So he took a couple of sticks and finally tasted the infamous snack in a way that didn’t end up with his jacket going to the cleanings. Hmmm. The sweet coating wasn’t bad. He preferred finer Swiss chocolate from his days in Germany, but this was edible. The crunchy fried part, however, tasted slightly like plastic to Klavier.
He could see someone craving this once in a blue moon or them being used as appetizer in an informal party. But as the addiction such that triumphs above the diet of a person? No, he couldn’t get it. They weren’t that good. And she kept going about his bad taste in things? Give me a break, he thought. Not a Snackoo break, although he wouldn’t mind a piece of a Kit-Kat bar. Anything for the artificial flavor to go away.
He left the department with the feeling that not only Detective Skye would notice the decrease on the bag, but that she’d also recognize him as the intruder with any fingerprints left on the drawers. Conclusions about his own family’s inability to be effective criminals aside, he wasn’t that worried. If she ever whined about it, he could always point out the fact he was still waiting for that report.
