Oh, apparently it's love-or-hate with Hetalia. There's wank every day in fandomsecrets because of the constant bashing, so I'd say you're far from alone. My flist has it's supporters and retractors.

I think I was indifferent. The art itself is sort of ulcer-inducing to me (and I'm someone who's not picky with art as long as the series is good for me) in the fact I can't pick most of the characters apart and the excess of blush in some countries was kind of creepy. I wouldn't mind the gag factor that much, because I like humor mocking history if done well, but I couldn't understand half of the strips I read because of the art.

The only thing that comes to mind, although it's not that new (late 2007) is "Ef: A Tale of Memories". It's a romantic drama, and can be a bit confusing at first, because it deals with intertwining stories between 6 people, but I found it very fulfilling. It's 12 episodes. Make sure it's Memories and not Melodies (which is the sequel, kind of).

...Ugh. Sorry, no, 100% definitely not my thing. I appreciate the rec, but it's not something I'd like to watch or play.
