My words exactly, except I wouldn't call him "stoic." He's acting like a coward--instead of facing life without Yuuko, he's shut himself into the store and cut off almost all contact with the world. This is the boy who was supposed to become a kind, brave, and wise person. This is the result of nearly two hundred chapters of character development.
I'm still going to stick with it, since I don't want to be left with the image of Watanuki as a parasite, but I understand your wanting to be rid of the whole thing. >:/
