Huh

I think I did well. I'd have to have half of what I answered wrong to fail it.

There's an XBOX 360 pack in Game that I might think about getting. It brings Bioshock 2, which I'm not interested about but maybe my brothers do plan to get it? Incidentally, their birthday is this month. So I could keep the console and give them the game as a present, given that they want it.

I have 280 euros. The pack is 270. If I buy it, I can't get anything for the rest of the month. I wanted to buy a pen tablet and the Seirei no Moribito DVD boxset and I'm not thaaaat excited on getting a 360, even with Vesperia waiting for me. I could always get them anything else or just toss them a 50€ bill. Decisions, decisions...

B-But there are so many nice things about the 360! /unhelpful

There are, and if I were to buy a console it would be it, but. At the same time, I'm a really lousy gamer with really... quirky tastes, to say it mildly. There's something about most games in this generation that I don't seem to get into (can't get into sandboxes, shooters, sports, warfare, anything sci-fi, anything too realistic, generic fantasy RPG, brown palette. this leaves so, so, so little options left). So the biggest reason why I haven't bought a 360 is me wondering if I'll have enough games to make it worth it. I'm too picky, and getting one >250€ console for three games might not be good. I wonder if I shouldn't do a PS2 and buy one when its lifetime is almost over, so I'd have a gazillion legendary games to try on.

I know I'm WEIRD. And a broke weird, also.

I personally think Mass Effect is the single best reason to get an XBOX 360, but it's a science-fiction RPG/shooter. :/ The characters and dialogue are amazing, though, and the whole series is supposed to be a nod to the many tropes of the sci-fi genre, so it's not as generic as it sounds at first.

Other than that, I don't have much of a reason to suggest getting one. Get an old Gamecube and Baten Kaitos Origins instead.

Regardless of the genre, saw five minutes of my brother playing Mass Effect 2 this weekend, and I was so utterly bored out of my mind. Even if it's a good plot, every single tiny text felt like a dull tl;dr block to me. So... YMMV, I guess? Besides, I'm sure I'd hate the social part of it and there's something about Bioware games in general that really bugs/bores me.

Like I said, I'm a weird, picky person.

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Is that so? D: I personally love flavor text, so even my brother got bored out his mind when I played through the first game and took my time reading through all of the planet and Codex entries. Granted, Mass Effect is the only Bioware game I've ever played, and I have heard that a lot of their games are cut out of the same cloth.

That said, the other only games we've gotten thus far for the XBOX are Grand Theft Auto (tasteless sandbox), Oblivion (generic fantasy sandbox that's more fun to watch than play), and Star Ocean: The Last Hope. My brother's playing through it right now, and thus far doesn't think it's anything special--it looks great (the character designs are by Katsumi Enami, the illustrator for Baccano!), the battle system is something like Tales of Symphonia's, but the characters are basically walking tropes. :/

Grammar ftw

Asdfjkf just popping in to say you have excellent taste in games there, stranger. I recently finished Mass Effect for the first time, starting 2 now. The world and races and history are all just so in-depth, and the emotional side of 2 is really impressive! I really wish we'd get more WRGs like the ones BioWare makes. Dragon Age is definitely worth the play if you enjoyed ME, btw. Very much so the same kinda deal, only with a fantasy setting and different storyline.

UHH ANYWAY STILL ON THE ME HIGH HAD TO RAMBLE SOMEWHERE. It's rare to come across people who can appreciate the work put into both Western and Eastern games (totally agree on Star Ocean, though)!

Do you know that I love your Ren icon? I've had a lot of trouble finding good icons from Fragile, but hopefully that'll change when the game's released.

Mass Effect 2 is going to have to wait until I go home for Spring break, but I'm definitely looking forward to it! :D My brother has actually been looking around for new titles for the XBOX in the meantime, so I'll definitely put in a word for Dragon Age when I talk to him next.

I've seen so many forum threads alternately bashing JRPGs and Western RPGs, it's not even funny. There are definitely overall differences that mark them as different genres (to an extent), but it always boils down to the individual game and company.

Haaahaha, thank-you. XD I actually made that one via capping a YouTube video in terrible quality, so I think it turned out somewhat fortunate, considering. It's from the spoof trailer of the game, which I believe had been released some time around April Fools last year - if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend looking it up. Never laughed so hard in my life.

Anyway, couldn't agree more; especially lately, it seems the rivalry between western and eastern gaming is just as bad as the ever-present console wars. So many comparisons, so much bashing... While opinions do and should vary from game to game, in a way it's still like comparing apples and oranges. Both make, um. Good juice, just with different...tastes. --But redundant metaphor is redundant!

I would gladly waste your time recommending titles on 360 being the unfortunate addict I am, but instead I'll just say, for as far as Mass Effect 2 goes: definitely carry over from an ME1 save file, once you're able to play on break! Lots of little goodies and familiar faces with special dialog - er - assuming a lot of old acquainances were spared after their wrong-doings in the first game. 8|;

I'm down with long, complicated text in my fandoms, especially the metatext. Just not in sci-fi. Not a big fan of technobabble or interplanetary political/social commentary or war babbling, and that's the kind of tl;dr in this kind of games.

My brothers have several GTA and Oblivion, not my kind of thing at all. The Star Ocean series is not my kind of thing; I don't mind clichés in RPGs as long as they're endearing like in Tales or Chrono Trigger, and this doesn't seem the case.

I feel like bioware should be paying me for being this obnoxious

[identity profile] bearhive.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, semi-late here and aplogies for jumping in, but as far as Mass Effect goes: I'm exactly the same whenever it comes sci-fi. Maybe worse. I swore it off simply for that fact, criticized it like a fool and so on. What's more, I hate aliens, always have hated aliens and space bores me. I usually think it's just too sterile, too empty and lifeless without vegetation. I would have never even played the game had it not been on sale for like, $5.

...And those opinions still mostly stay, but Mass Effect completely opened my eyes. It was done SO well that I could get past my multiple dislikes. I have to say, it's not everything you expect from glancing at it. It's better. There are green planets bathed in warm sun with organic life, stations with cherry blossom trees and lakes, and the characters-- Oh, lawd. The characters were so well fleshed out that their stories had me more attached to them than any pretty Japanese rpg character I've ever encountered (...Zidane aside). Again, there's actually a surprising amount of emotional depth; things I didn't imagine male fans would like.

...ALL THAT TO SAY, I think if a person like me, skeptical and hateful, could manage to love this game enough to still be playing it, it's at least worth a shot through renting. To be completely honest though 2 would probably appeal to you more, despite the lack of planet exploration. A super lovable crew, more powerful "caster" types, and more straight to the point with quests.

(Oh my god forgive me I've been raving in the forums for too long. :|)

Anyway GTA and Oblivion I can understand not liking. GTA very much so appeals to what teenaged boys like (though I enjoyed the multiplayer mode), while Oblivion actually was...boring lol. Still, at least give a WRPG a try, I'm totally and happily turned forever! D:

I bought it without having a 360, and it's there gathering dust :( It's a cool game, although not my favorite Tales. I will grant you that there are lots of pretty guys in it and Yuri's hair is shiny.

I can ask my cousin for opinions, but he probably has very different tastes (he likes games that are all about killing things, mostly).

My brother is of the same school, and we disagree in every video game ever. Except maybe a couple of Zeldas and perhaps God of War-esque games. So, I guess it's useless to ask your cousin.

ETA: Oh, and Katamari, but that one is addictive. I heard the 360 Katamari isn't that good, though.
