taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Peony the IX / a thorn in the throne)

Don't wanna talk about wars between nations

Complaining works! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! My Tsuioku no Jade volumes arrived yesterday! ♥

Man, why is this an AU? Because yes, it is an AU. I can go and take metacanon as personal canon (i.e, Tales of Fandom) if they don't interfere with the original canon. This, however, completely rewrites the Nebilim sidequest. It's a pity because the flashbacks are really spiffy.

I won't comment on chapters 1-3 since they're already scanned and translated. And I can't read Japanese beyond katakana so I don't get the dialog :(

Chapter 4 begins with the most fanservice image of Jade you'll find outside a fanart/doujinshi: a young Jade, half shirtless and wounded, looking at his reflection in a mirror.

We return to the Military headquarters, where Jasper had finished his flashback tale a while back and was interrupted by Peony. Back in ch.03, they had left in the air that Jasper had helped in fomicry research and "that incident" is mentioned.

So now Jade is angry and leaves the room, and Peony stands up to go after him without saying a word. Meanwhile, the party looks at the documents, while good JC and Luke are all concerned for Jade. Then when everyone is gone, Jasper gives Luke Nebilim's profile... and more flashbacks.

Now we're on ND2003, in a lab that seems to be in Grand Chokmah. Jasper gets there with a letter for Jade. There, Jade and Saphir are testing the fomicry machine and get a clone of this guy, I think he was one of the bullies last chapter but I'm not sure. The replica has no soul/will, so it's a failure. Jade is later speaking with old fart Sesserman, and I pick up Karl 5th (btw, the current emperor, constantly shadowed in this manga), replicas and Hod in the conversation. Then he leaves and Jasper can give out the letter. It's Peony's. Jade burns it without even reading it first. Saphir seems particularly annoyed while Jade is like 8| Jasper is creeped out, and keeps being more and more creeped out every day at the lab.

This is a different day, and Jasper is at old McGovern's office (I guess he hadn't retired yet to St. Binah). He's using the good JC/evil JC nicknames, by the way XD So they're talking about Hod's destruction and Kimlasca, and then someone barges in.

UNEXPECTED (YOUNG) PEONY!

Who knows how he got to Grand Chokmah. Who cares, it's motherfucking Peony. Wearing a long fluffy coat, a scarf and, get this, winter boots. So pretty and thank Lorelei he's legal there, unf. And poor McGovern is all worried and his only eye is all -_O, while Peony is teasing him by yanking his hair and beard, fff. Meanwhile Jasper remembers that guy the one who sent that letter, and then McGovern tells him that Peony is the prince and he's all like HOLY SHIT WHAT. So JC is guiding Peony all nervous, and Peony is all friendly and casual and patting his back, which makes things worse.

No, you know what makes things worse? The lab. Because the replica now is dead and drenched in his own blood. No idea what just happened but it's safe to assume it was Jade. So Peony goes past Jasper and Saphir to confront Jade against a metal tube. Jade doesn't argue and seems to try to ignore him. But Peony is pissed, hits his hand against the tube and leaves his arm extended in confrontation. So he tried to reason with Jade re: replicas and Nebilim, to no avail. Saphir yells to leave Britney Jade alone and not to butt in or something.

Later that night (I guess it was the same night), Jade is drinking at the bar. Jasper looks for him to give him those papers from Hod. To his surprise, Jade has this sad, exhausted expression on his face. He's angsting about sensei. But it doesn't last long, because after flipping the reports a bit he has A Big Stupid Idea. It's visually interesting that he has the scariest evil face ever while a background Nebilim has the saddest face ever.

Back to the lab to do Jade's new research, and get this. It's something he planned from the reports of the experiments on Van Fende! They don't really say it's him, but there's a shadowed image of 11 years-old Van behind a crumbling Hod, so. I can't say what's about, but a hospital-pajama'd Jade is the subject/source and is connected to the machine by tubes, I suppose he's either using his own body fonons or providing his own memories or both. He takes off his glasses, maybe this is relevant. They start up and it's kinda working, there's a naked Nebilim replica now, but then shit happens. She disintegrates, he gets the nastiest wound on his chest, machine explodes. He sorta hallucinates sensei and everyone as kids, and you see kid!Jade and the now covered in blood Jade making the same gesture to reach out (but less happier and more angstier)

Aaaanyway, now Jade is bed-ridden in some room, very injured, with Jasper watching over him. Then guess who barges in, being a big ball of anger. Jade gets his Malkuth Punch of Friendship from Peony, sadly not in the wounded cheek so it'd hurt more. Peony scolds him, and this scene looks pretty much like in the anime, except with Jasper and a vision of Gelda surrounded by flowers (as in SHE'S DEAD, GET IT ALREADY?!). Then we get close-ups to Jade's eyes, first very sad, then he closes them. He says something, probably in the lines of "okay, alright, I'll drop this replica thing now".

The next scene is one I'm really curious for a translation, because it's when Jade dumps breaks up with confronts Saphir after his new resolve. It goes exactly as good as you'd imagine, with Saphir yelling and even holding Jade by the collar and pushing him against a wall. It's incredibly frustrating because Jade is acting quite cold and collected while Saphir being desperate and angry and not understanding what's his problem. Then Jade says "sayounara" to him (he uses that word, yes), and that's the last straw. Saphir lets him off and his hands are shaking, then he runs away.

Jasper had seen all the drama, and talks to Jade, who's wearing this sad smile. Then Jasper follows Saphir, who's crying his eyes out at the docks. And I think he's blaming Peony as well. The chapter ends with a determined close-up of Saphir, Jade's distant face, and a full body composition of the current Colonel and Dist (on his chair) back to back.

End of volume omake? A DRAWING OF BATTLE MASTER JADE *_* Plus some sketches, mostly of both JCs but also some Saphir and a Peony.

I'll make a summary of volume 2 later. It's not bad, but it is rather different.

It's a pleasant surprise, yeah :D

But seriously? Since he's so minor, whenever he pops in that it's not in the main plot of things (aka, they're going explicitly to see him or something), I'm not expecting it. This makes most of his appearances an UNEXPECTED PEONY.

I bought them on YesAsia and it's only two. There are scanlations of the first one, but not the second one. Which reminds me, I never did a summary of volume 2.
