I need an icon of Elliot Nightray for this post

I honestly, HONESTLY need to get into something more upbeat. The things I've read so far in the month and the one before (not counting that chapter of the Iliad, as it's more on douchy than depressing lines at this point) have been a kick in my non-existent balls. Even when they're satisfying like Percy 5 or FMA, there's still something heart-breaking.

And then there's stuff where it's constantly the ouchies plot wise. Speaking of which, very bad idea to check American comics, self. Particularly bad idea to read the three volumes of Runaways in two days. But I do not want to talk much about that one right now; let's just say I have bad luck choosing favorites and a-ahahaha that death in volume 2...

Kinda related to that, by the way, but it's been something I've been mentioning in comments in my journal for some time. Self-sacrificing yourself -or being willing to- for the sake of someone you care about or to atone for your raison d'angst. I've been aware lately of how common this trope is, and it's beginning to irk me when the execution leads to an excess of OMG TEH DRAMA for said character or the ones they're close to. I've begun to call this emosacrifice, to make a difference with the normal, important sacrifices made to bring the story and cast forward. The emosacrifice serves almost to no other purpose than to give ~pain~ and ~depth~ and ~shock~, since as we know that's the only valid way to storytelling! Art is pain! Meh, what's wrong with wanting a healthy balance between happy things and conflict? Sure writers, kill people off if you must, but don't overdo the tone.

I don't know where this came from. Must be my stress because of RL.

Sooooo, guys. In need of happy escapism here. Something sweet (and short) to read or watch that's upbeat and won't make me to hit characters in the face with a trout? Much obliged.

koukou debut is pretty upbeat, needless is a lot of fun uh

I'd say gintama and hajime no ippo but both of those are loooong. Now that I think about it I don't really watch/read a lot of upbeat stuff.

Eh, I tried Koukou Debut a while back and couldn't get into it. I'm extra picky with shoujo or something.

Yeah, waaaaaaaay too long. I wish I had more time and a way to watch the Gintama anime again -I used to go to Crunchyroll before they became WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE INTERWEBS IS NOT THE U.S.

Thanks anyway!

Aww. Otomen and Dengeki Daisy are pretty good shojo's too if you're willing to try them.

AW *punches crunchyroll*

I really dig Otomen, actually, but not sure if it's enough to reread it right now. Dengeki Daisy sounds very slice of life, and I'm even pickier about those. I kind of wanted something fresh and with less realism. Maybe I'll just... rewatch the first season of Sengoku Basara XD

ETA: wait, no, there's Hondam's death. Bawww.

Aw! i think sengoku basara can fix you up though LMAO

Read or watch Chi's Sweet Home, and read Yotsuba. I hear Kobato is pretty cute too. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu is a great little spinoff series that always makes me lol; you don't need to watch the previous series to get what's going on.

I'd prefer to avoid Chi's Sweet Home like the plague. Yes, it is cute, but I'm staring at photos of cats all day long lately when helping my mom, which means I'm sooo overloaded with the species and not in a good way. Bleagh.

Ah, I don't know if Yotsuba would work ATM, since happy shenanigans of a happy family could be counter-productive in my angry/bitter/depressive state of mind.

I once watched the first episode of Fumoffu and didn't leave me any strong impression, though.

Thanks anyway!

Hm. How about Aria or Genshiken?

Alternatively, I find that listening to classical music helps. I've got a lot of anime OSTs I can recommend.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-05-26 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Genshiken was another series I couldn't get into; most of the cast was creeping me out (to be fair, the exact same thing happened to me with The Big Bang Theory, so it's not only stereotypes of Japanese geeks what I'm picky about).

I love Aria to pieces, yet I have to be in a certain zen mood to enjoy it fully. I have the last volume bought this weekend and I haven't been able to touch it.

Music does wonders lift my mood when I'm out, but it's a bit out of the question inside the house. It's hard to be alert to people calling me to help with one ear and chillaxing to the rhythm with the other. /also bitter about not being able to listen to music in peace, god-fucking-dammit

I-I'm sorry, I'm really complicated D:

[identity profile] sunegami.livejournal.com 2010-05-26 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And I was just coming here to recommend Genshiken! But then, I recommend it to everybody. X3

I wish I had something to rec you. :( The only happy escapism I can think of is in the form of Giant Space Robots, and we already know that's not your style. (And they do have random deaths anyway, so...)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-05-26 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, no worries! If I didn't have a long list of stuff to check out (and yet, ironically I still need recs because I'm not in the mood for lots of it), I promise you I'd be giving your crazy robots a chance.

Diría Nodame, pero me parece que dijiste que no te enganchó, no? Mmmm.. y me parece que Oofuri tampoco te llama la atención?

Creo que aparte de eso lo único happy que se me ocurre es que juegues Paper Mario y no creo que eso cuente |D;

Oh! Podrías echarle un vistazo a Sarah Jane Adventures, el happy spin-off de Doctor Who :o

No me enganchó y no quiero ninguna rec josei. Todo el mundo en mi flist adora Oofuri pero el manganime de deportes va en contra de mi religión.

Nada de videojuegos, por dios. No he podido tocar una consola en casi dos semanas y tengo como 3476 juegos pendientes as it is.

I have never thought to hit characters in the face with a trout. It's always been MY FIST.

In-joke coming from...

Still, the trout is bound to hurt more and leave their faces all smelly.

I had never thought of that. *ponders*

For some people, a bitchslap is not effective enough. You need something stronger! *uses related icon*

[identity profile] the-great-elk.livejournal.com 2010-05-27 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true! I probably would have gravitated towards stabbing, but trout is less expensive!

I doubt the suicidal shounentards would learn from old good stabbing. Troutpunching as punishment might perhaps bring a conditional reflexes. Pavlov's Trout, if you will.

I read shojo/josei 90% of the time and I know you don't like those genres unless few exceptions, so I'm afraid I can't help. And the seinen I've read recently is extremely fucking depressing, so.

Uhm, but still, have you tried Yankee-kun to Megane-chan? It is quite fun and it's not technically shoujo, despite the romance undertones. Also, I'd recommend downloading the Layton movie as soon as it's out because it's HILARIOUS and LULZ.
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (PeonyxJade / Mutual annoyance)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-05-27 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I read Yankee and Megane months ago and it was sorta funny, but I guess it didn't make that strong of an impression on me since I never looked for updates again. I haven't finished the first Layton game so I have no idea if I'd get the movie.
