taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Waka / pretty fly for a moon guy)

This is starting to look like Muppets Babies

Thank you, new Okamiden trailer, you just mindraped me without lube.

Okay, first of all, the other two companions (why do I feel this canon is my very own Doctor Who?). Actually, I really like their design! And they're girls! I mean, guys, I love how female characters are in Okami, showing that you can be awesome and do so much without being an idiot yielding a sword -I have no idea if this is an unpopular opinion or not, as there's not a lot of meta discussion about gender dynamics or anything deep at all in this fandom. But well, I'm glad we have more variety and it's not going to become a sausage fest of little boys on Chibiterasu's back.

I really don't understand why a mermaid, though. And one looking so stereotypically Western-looking, at that. Why not having a Draconian girl as a companion instead? They didn't do a lot with that race, so they couldn't be butchering it that much. (My inner 9 year-old girl is still "eeeee pretty mermaid!!1one!" despite this. I loved mermaids.)

Why the fuck is Kokari the same age he was before? I just. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, CANON.

...Brush God fishies? What is this, the constellation of Pisces?

Is the baby monkey Brush God playing a vuvuzela? It looks like one.

Yay for Samurai Dandy prancing in the trailer. Also, apparently most of my brain seems to be wasting space in remembering random Sei-an NPCs.

OKAY, THIS IS OUT OF THE WAY. TIME FOR THE 'WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN' MOMENT.

JUST. I. UH. WHO THE FUCK IS THAT?!

My God, I want to believe it's just a random Moon Tribe kid, but the clothes are pink and purple and they're wearing red tengu geta. That's so fucking specific! I JUST. WHO DO I PUNCH FOR THIS?

IS THAT A CHILD OF WAKA? IS THAT A CLONE? IS THAT AN AU BABY VERSION? IS THAT A FANBOY WHO BOUGHT A BOX OF L'OREAL AND DECIDED TO FOLLOW WAKA'S LEGACY? OR DID WAKA DE-AGE HIMSELF FOR THE LULZ?

(I'll laugh if it's the latter because I just read House of Many Ways and that means he pulled a Howl! But then I'll cry because that means he's in this trainwreck of a game and he will be canon butchered. NOT SURE IF WANT.)

I, um, hope it's not a baby of his even if it's most likely the correct option. Because I don't think I want to know who the mother is? It's not a matter of shippiness (even if it would be kind of funny if this kid was Ammy's too and therefore Chibi's sibling, if only to squick everyone in the fandom out.) Because, most likely, this will be his kid with someone else, and I'm more annoyed at the fact this means he ran off to the Celestial Plain without caring about abandoning his child, making him a very jerk of a father. It's a matter of circumstances, not him sleeping with people and shit. Hell, it was 200 years, I'd be surprised if he didn't go and get some action.

Plus blegh, everyone having babies all of the sudden.

I'M OVERTHINKING THIS AGAIN, AREN'T I?

I have nothing constructive to add because I forgot to continue my Okami file when school ate my life. |D I haven't picked up my game, thus Ammy has yet to leave Kamui. I guess I should probably get back on that someday soon... ._.

Still. Baby Wakka pulling a Twinkle!Howl on us sounds all sorts of epic.

Ah, you're almost done, then!

It would, if only because I've roleplayed as both idiots, but in this game everything scares me to death ;;

Hold on bb, I'll get back to you when I buy the first Okami game.

Do try it! It's not for everyone, but it's my favorite game ever and I have to recommend it on principle ♥

Susano had a full grown kid in three months.

That's the mystery Capcom alludes to that really baffles me. They said it will "be explained eventually"...

The original game also had those, like having something "legendary" from "ancient times" happening one-two centuries ago. I think I'm the only person who've always thought that time in that world didn't work the same way, thus it all made sense to me in its own. So I never got why there was a need to set a specific moment in a timeline and then coming up with an explanation.

See, I can buy Ammy being a bad mother because gods in mythology tend to be horrible in parenthood without noticing and send their kids to dangerous quests all the time. Plus, Chibi is a godmod and will be okay, I guess (and if he/she isn't, nothing of value was lost). But I'd feel so sorry for a random Moon Tribe descendant with a cryptic bastard as their dad for some reason: that sounds like a lonely life to have, IDK.

>Amaterasu the Mother of the Entire World being a bad mother, the same Amaterasu that every Brush God basically kneels down to going LOVING MOTHER TO US ALL

i can't picture her being a bad mother at all ever lmao

While I applaud companies who really aspire to create good homages to beautiful work, Kamiya's a fairly realistic guy. He works for Platinum Games now, and during a party he hosted, a fan asked when he would make Viewtiful Joe 3, to which he replied on his blog, "Sure, but would anyone actually buy it?"

The disappointing truth is this is about as much of a sequel or continuation of the series as we'll get. Kamiya's moved on and I doubt he thinks his old franchises are even profitable now.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-07-20 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I really don't understand why CAPCOM is trying so hard with this franchise. It never sold well despite of the good critics anyway, and I'm not sure the NDS can make it popular.

Regardless of realism, Kamiya couldn't touch his old franchises anymore even if they sold well. CAPCOM still had the copyright/trademark for Viewtiful Joe, Okami, everything Clover Studio ever, and even stuff of his that he got kicked out of doing the sequels like DMC.

[identity profile] alternian.livejournal.com 2010-07-20 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
They're making the game because they can and they want to, and also because they love the original. The Wii Port did so-so, and that was also hampered by Capcom's enormous fuck-up in America slapping on a cover-art stolen from IGN, complete with watermark.

Have hope, there's always this;

"While Ōkamiden will be a DS title, Eshiro has considered to expand subsequent games to work with the Nintendo 3DS unit based on the game's reception."
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-07-20 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
...............That gives me despair, not hope! D: D: D: GTFO Eshiro. *doesn't trust CAPCOM*

[identity profile] alternian.livejournal.com 2010-07-20 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, people don't usually realize it but a lot of work goes into making a video game. Eshiro and his team really do love Okami and they're trying to give it the love it honestly does deserve. Just like Peter Jackson revived an ancient and beloved story by lovingly crafting the recent trilogy, Eshiro is trying to rejuvenate a world that is full of stories to tell.

Kamiya could easily volunteer to make Viewtiful Joe 3 or Okami 2 (and he expressed interest in making Okami 2 with his own ideas, but again his work just does not sell.)

Right now, the Japanese video game market is crumbling from the outside in. ATLUS and Namco-Bandai, two companies who are highly successful in America, are almost bankrupt in Japan- the last few years have not been kind to them. It's tough to make a game, so I'm glad to see there are people who still think Okami can make a comeback and get people interested.

[identity profile] alternian.livejournal.com 2010-07-20 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
In a recent article on Cracked, one of the columnists presented a puzzling set of statistics;

Bayonetta, a high-octane thrill ride that welcomes the skilled and relaxed gamer alike, and oozes both style and sex appeal, sold a meager 1 million+ copies.

Wii Fit, which is essentially simulating exercises that any instructional video could show you, has sold over 23 million copies worldwide.

A low-substance casual game that costs more because of its otherwise useless peripheral has sold twenty times as well as a genuinely original game from the guy who created Devil May Fucking Cry. That's the world we live in.

It sucks.

Sorry for butting in, but that's incredibly depressing considering the relative hype Bayonetta received prior to release. I'm more used to amazing but badly-advertised games like Baten Kaitos Origins and Beyond Good and Evil being ignored.

That said, I hope the industry can cut a balance between drawing in casual players (via Nintendo's approach) and continuing to develop well-illustrated, challenging, and...well, original games while keeping itself afloat. Who knows where it'll go from here.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Samurai Dandy after seeing illustrations of actual young men going around in starched ruffs during the nineteenth century. H-he's such a fashion icon! (Also, the second girl looks as if she'll be awesome -- I hope she stays in the game for longer than just for whatever leads up to the battle with the giant Kabuki reject.)

I'm not sure what to make of this "children" theme going on, though, especially since CAPCOM seems to be beating it to death. Who knows, maybe Waka got stuck in a time machine when he was little and we'll get to see some irritated Moon Tribe member pick him up at the end of the game.
