taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Pkmn / happy Gastly)

This one is about digital critters

We've had electrical storms last night and this morning. One of the thunders sounded like a fucking explosion, even. So on the power shortages I took the chance to get ahead in the plot of POKEYMANS. Two gyms, two HMs (Fly, finally!), Red Gyarados, and even I got someone to trade me a Gastly via wi-fi.

Um, I'm going to be honest and say that I've only played SoulSilver and most of my pokes knowledge comes from osmosis, loose anime episodes when I was bored, and catthing shit at VDex. So I'm not familiar with most species' badassery or lack of, especially of gen 3-4. Plus, I think the usefulness of a poke depends of their stats and abilities and level, more than the species itself. Or to put in object-oriented programming terms, less about the class and more about the instance.

So I'm giving this a twist.

Top 5 10 useful Pokémon I own in my current gameplay

Feraligatr (male, lvl 40)
Nicknamed Caimán. This is the starter, thus the most evolved one. Fugly as fuck. My God, Caimán, you were so cute as a Totodile and now you look like a reptilian hunchback of NotreDayum. His attacks are mad, though, and this is what it counts.

Gyarados (male, lvl 31)
I spent one afternoon leveling the Magikarp. Totally worth it! Gyarados are fugly too, but there's something cuddly about their crazy face. IDK, or I just love the dragon type. Anyway, this guy is one badass motherfucker. I also have a shiny one, also a dude and lvl 30, but I only use that one for Whirlwind.

Dragonair (female, lvl 31)
My babyyyyyyyyy~ Okay, granted, I've bought like three Dratinis in the Voltorb minesweeper casino minigame, but she was my first and I'm raising her to Dragonite. The Dratini family is one of my favorites ever. I was so happy when she went Dragonair because it's my favorite evolution of the three. I think I'll evolve another Dratini afterwards so I have a Dragonair forevah. Also, I taught her Surf.

Togetic (male, lvl 31)
Nicknamed Huevón (which is actually a swear word in Spanish and a wordplay with huevo (egg)), since I felt like making the joke when they gave me the egg. But then he got awesome. I like his psychic move a lot and he's pretty good at battle. I wonder if I'll ever the stone to evolve him into Togekiss. He's my co-pilot as I taught him Fly.

Onix (male, lvl 31)
Nicknamed Temblores (quakes) by the NPC I got him from. I had gotten used to the nick by the time I could change it, so it stayed. So tough! His defense is so good that even critical hits don't do that much damage. I bring him to almost every gym and cave explorations.

Weepinbell (female, lvl 30)
Bitch got so ugly after she evolved. But it's okay, since I'm not using a stone to uglify her further and she might suck me whole a la James' Victreebel. But she's my plant poke since forever. The best part is the attack that makes other sleep, if only because I can bring her to bug catching contests and win like a boss.

Flaaffy (male, lvl 28)
My electric poke, also quite good at his thing. Just a little longer and he'll be a beautiful Ampharos *_* I do miss the times he was a Mareep, since I could make Duklyon jokes about the similarities with the 100% wool monster :'D

Ninetales (female, lvl 32)
Why is she so below? Her attacks SUCK. I think I used the stone too soon and now I have problems to make her learn a fire movement that works. But she still makes the list because she's the only fire I have yet and OMG NINETALES SO PRETTY.

Slowpoke (male, lvl 22)
He used to be a good backup for water/Totodile and psychic/Togepi. But lately I don't used him that much anymore since I try to have a mixed party of many types (or so I'd like to say, except I have TWO dragons, shut up). Jokes and memes aside, he's good.

Machop (female, lvl 20)
This one I used for a while too, since there was a gym that needed fight type. I then learned the lesson that type doesn't matter much in gyms, and the suggested type sometimes tends to be ran over in two turns anyway by the leader. But hey, manry girl.

Those aren't my favorite pokes ever, though, but the ones who are doing it for me right now. If I were to make a list of Pokémon I find cute/adorable/cool, Dragonair, Gyarados and Ninetales would make the list, plus Ampharos and Togekiss. So, here's another top list.

Top 5 Pokémon I don't use but are among my favorites and they kill me with cute

Lapras
I do have a Lapras, but I already have too much water-type in my party. Which breaks my heart, because incidentally they're my favorite. They're like having your very own blue Nessie! Weeeee!

Gastly family
Ghostiiiiiiiiiies *_* I like them all, but Gastly is a gassy ball of cute and I didn't rest until I got one in a trade online. Since I picked her up yesterday and is at lvl 21-22, I can't put her in the list above. But ONE DAY! I live precariously on VDex by catching Gastlies of any generation. Shut up.

Squirtle family
THEY'RE ADORABLE TURTLES AND WATER STARTERS. AWESOME.

Altaria
No idea about this one, probably impossible to catch in this game, but they're fluffy blue cloud-birdies and I want one. So much.

Dewgong
Awwww look at the puffy cheeks and the Goofy face and the tail and the fins and sajhfajfha.

I love Feraligatr and Gyarados. I think they're both so cute. And Flaafy and Ninetales too, even though Ninetales isn't really great even if you had waited to use the Fire Stone. orz

I kind of wish Dragonair was the final evolution in the Dratini line, I like her better than Dragonite.

Really, Ninetales never get better? Welp, there goes the plan. Now to find another fire pokes.

Feraligatr isn't that fug, but compared to Totodile it is. But I know what you mean, it's cuddly in this odd way like Gyarados.

So agreed about Dragonair ♥ They're beautiful. Dragonite are so fucking adorable, but I would've liked them better as a separate species. Why is a water Eastern dragon suddenly a traditional Western cartoon-styled flying dragon? Makes no sense.

Are you a fan of dungeon crawlers/Roguelikes? I'm enjoying Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 more than the main Pokemon games. Explorers of Sky even helps get rid of some otherwise badass Pokemons' double weaknesses by giving them species-exclusive items that let them absorb damage of a type they're weak to. Imagine, a Dragon/Flying type that won't get killed by one Ice Beam! Also, dual ability species get the benefit of both abilities.

I actually tried the first game on emulator (for GBA, I think), and I loved the concept but I have attention span issues when it comes to dungeon crawling. So I never remember to pick it up -granted, I was still in the first dungeon. Maybe I'd like it better if I played it in a console, but I can't spend money in new games when I have such a backlog.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Can't do much about the game backlog, but playing it on the DS should help with the attention span issues. Closing the DS just puts the game to sleep, and nothing changes when you re-open it. Also, it's very easy to "cheat" and get Pokemon and items you want; just use the Wonder Mail Generators found online. Sure, it takes some challenge out of the game, but who cares when you're having fun not struggling through the dungeons thanks to it?

No, the attention span issue in dungeon crawling comes from me being bored by doing the same kind of place repeatedly. Even when the level/floor/dungeon changes, those kinds of RPG are always too similar. It's not a matter of closing it when I'm being called, it's a matter of me getting bored with the game. Just for normal Pokémon I have to take breaks of days and go to new places and grind other pokes to keep me from dropping. I do have separate attention issues playing stuff on PC, however. I don't understand? My DS isn't hacked/doesn't use R4 cards, just in case.

Ah, yeah, it does get repetitive. I don't get bored with it, but from reviews other people have. And unfortunately, until after you finish a certain post-game mission, you can't switch your main character or partner out of the party, and in several dungeons can't bring in any other pokemon. It doesn't require hacking at all, just this (http://www.upokecenter.com/games/dungeon2/guides/wondermail.php) or this (http://apointlessplace.net/wms/wmgenerate.html). Choose the mission parameters, it gives you a password, enter that password in the opening screen, and you have that mission. It probably makes more sense once you've played enough to get missions entirely in-game.

Thanks so much for that script
