Whut

So, watching Xena 1x06 (I know, shut up), and this jewel of a conversation comes out. It was more or less...

Xena: I'm going to need a new army.
Ares: Whoever you want. The most legendary warriors in history, even.
Xena: Hector? Achilles? Agamemnon? They're long gone...
Ares: I'm the god of war, bb. I'd ttly bring them back for you.

Ah phooey, my suspension of disbelief went down the drain.

Because you know, Ares? I really, really, really, really don't think it's a good idea to put Hector in the same army as those two. You should know, you were there, for fuck's sake!

It's amazing how even when they make him lots cooler and smarter than he really was in myths, he's still dumb as a brick. Fail, Ares.

(yeah, I've been quite lazy, but I do plan to retake my Iliad summaries)

ETA: Wait a minute, how the hell can he bring back people from the dead?! That's not a part of his domains. Doesn't uncle Hades have something to say to this? What is Ares going to tell him, "I need this favor, because I have to bang this really hawt woman, so pleaaaaase"?

/insert rant here about how Greek mythology gods weren't exactly omnipotent and not all of them could do the same stuff and blah blah blah

I thought it was obvious that that's the point of polytheism. When a religion has more than one god, they normally specialize in a very professional, self-absorbed way. I mean, there's nothing written that says that Ares can't resurrect someone, but thinking that he can is a stretch. And even if all Olympians could, Hades wouldn't let them.

Someone should've sent the memo to Dionysus that it was this easy. All that hassle to bring his mom back, for nothing!

Also, I can't talk about Xena specifically because I've never seen it, but I think the fact that they can't do anything just like that would make the story more interesting.

Hahaha, oh Xena..
Well, since stuff like Xena killing Artemis and Athena, and Artemis being one of the three goddesses on the golden apple debacle (or was it on Hercules?) happened on that show I sort of expected anything from them on the mythology aspect XD

Um, dude, spoilers. This is the first time I'm watching this series.

Artemis wasn't one of the three goddesses: it was Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena. IIRC Artemis and Leto were with the Trojans in the war, probably since it was Apollo's side. But yeaaaah, Athena is one of the three.

I'm watching this for the 90's cheese and not the mythology. I'm actually really lenient to mythology butchery myself. It's just that I had heard that the Ares in Xena is really popular and I was curious, and then he's still an idiot.

Sorry! I thought you were rewatching D:

Yeeah, the pairing was really popular back in the day. They made him all dark and sexy and stuff xD
