And you are such a cool fandom most of the times...

Hey, you know, I like ports of old games! I've bought/gotten my fair amount of games I really enjoyed but never finished, or I'm too lazy to replay, or I don't have the original console anymore. Most of them are Zeldas, but dudes, I feel a sort of homely comfort knowing I can replay Ocarina in at least two (soon three) consoles other than NINTENDOSIXTYFOUUUR.

True, when they add new shit or remove old shit beyond improves to gameplay it's a bit YMMV for me, depending on the game, but then I watch a gif of a dog putting on sunglasses and I deal with it.

But yeah, like them ports. Even better, I love ports to handhelds! I discovered I'm more consistent playing on a GBA/NDS than a control/keyboard. I can play tiny chunks on bed or while I wait for something. This is several kinds of useful when it's a JRPG and it boosts my productivity, to the point I can actually reach the ending. I rarely finish games in consoles, I have to love it too dearly to give it dedication. But handhelds are magical like that for RPGs. And I honestly don't care about equal/loss of quality: I want to (RE)PLAY IT!

So when I hear that those bastards at NAMCO are porting Abyss to 3DS, my thought is "and how many lambs do I have to sacrifice to which pagan god for this to come to the West?"

I'd LOVE to own this one legally. I couldn't find it in a fair price at eBay and, since I had to mod my PS2 to play it either way, I shrugged and went pirate. Undubbed for extra fangirling. But really, this game and canon has given me so much joy, I'd happily sink my money on it. Even if it's the same game with the same graphics. But you have to translate it, NAMCO! I'm not even counting for it to get to Europe because it's you, but at least bring it to USA. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't decide to region-lock like those Sony wankers.

So when I hear that the fandom is whining about being trolled, my thought is "...you guys wouldn't survive a day in an ATLUS or Squeenix fandom, wouldn't you? lol wait, the Tales series is already portalicious, what the hell guys."

Haters to the left. PORTS ARE NORMAL BUSINESS. NO ONE ASKS YOU TO BUY A 3DS. IGNORE IT. Unless they do a Vesperia, then any wank is more than justified (and frankly, unless it's metacanon about the Keterburg gang or mindless sidequests, I'd prefer they don't add anything beyond new costumes), but we still don't know that so CHILL, OH MY GOD.

Uhhh whaaat? Isn't it a good thing, if the games're available for different consoles and such?

I mean idk if you feel that playing ToA or whatever game in a DS is a crime against nature, simply... don't buy it and stick to the original version? What's the big deal?

I thought so, but apparently it's Serious Business.

I'm not active in fandom really, but when I heard the news, I was like. "Damn, now I have to buy a 3DS. :(" Those things aren't cheap, man. But I kinda want one now.

A little worried how a game as huge as Abyss is going to carry over to a handheld, but it's looking like the 3DS has amazing capacity, so it seems like it's going to work out fine? IDK. |D

(but oooh new costumes oooooh do want do want, yes please!)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I already wanted one, so it's just another plus in the list. But I've seen people buying a console because of one game (normally stuff in a series, normally to blame Square-Enix or ATLUS).

If these screencaps (http://www.4gamer.net/games/121/G012149/20100929055/) are legit, it doesn't look too different from the PS2 game! But of course, people now wank because they're not upgrading the graphics or whatever, WTF.

(as long as it's not the "hey, it's this other Tales character's outfit!" they did in PS3!Vesperia and Graces, they looked boring)

[identity profile] daniela-lynx.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAHA, or in a Kojima Production's game/fandom. They would explode. I just watched the trailer for a 3DS remake of MGS3 and it looked really shiny, but had too much emphasis on the action aspects of the game instead of the story.

... Of course, the fact that Adamska really looks like her mother with those new graphics, for example, redeemed it to me instantly >>;

But yeah, I'm totally with you there. I'd eat meat for a MGS4 for an Xbox.
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably the trailer was to show that HEY, LOOK, EVEN WITHOUT A NORMAL JOYSTICK CONTROLLER YOU CAN PLAY A MGS!

Or it's the new Kojima method of trolling for trailers. I mean, doesn't the Raiden game's trailer is pretty much a Ginzu knife ad? XD

My brother would love a port of MGS4. He refuses to buy a PS3 for one game, though. Not even an used one.

[identity profile] pengiesama.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I REALLY doubt Namco's gonna release it in the U.S. or Europe, considering their track record, so I wouldn't get your hopes up. :c But, yanno, that's where the magic of pirating comes in...especially if the 3DS is regionless like its predecessor.

I don't know much about the Abyss fandom so I can only presume the reason they're flipping their shit is because of Vesperia's little port fiasco, where the PS3 port was basically an entirely new game...which I don't even want to play anyway because they added a gross new character and screwed up the story with a bunch of poorly-thought out new plotlines! Beware, they might stick a badly-done new character in your game too, for marketing.

[identity profile] lacunarity.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I know very little about Vesperia, but wasn't the new character a gun-wielding pirate girl? How the heck do you mess up something as awesome as that?

[identity profile] pengiesama.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
By making her pander to the lolicon crowd (she's actually an old woman, aged down via ~*~*magic*~*~...personally I would have WAY preferred to play as a grizzled old pirate woman!), be about as reliable as Cait Sith in combat, and have an annoying verbal tic, that's how. At least Cait Sith was a Scottish robot cat...

Edit: also adding her screwed up the group dynamics and added another nonsensical plotline to an already nonsensical plot. Goddamn Vesperia I love you but I just want to beat you over the head with an editing wiffle bat sometimes. Or all the times. ps your icon reminds me I have to play Grim Grimoire one of these days.

[identity profile] lacunarity.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's...pretty gross, actually. I didn't think they could mess up sassy girl pirate, but that would do it.

[identity profile] pengiesama.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much! Paraphrasing what one of my friends once said, the reasons for her inclusion and character design/behavior are so transparent and gross, and even though I suppose that's a bit of a...superficial reason for me to automatically dislike her, it's one that I find it very hard to see beyond. Maybe I have to loosen up, maybe my looseness quotient is fine as-is.

[identity profile] lacunarity.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
And yes, Grim Grimoire is indeed awesome.

[identity profile] pengiesama.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to have a hard time with console-based strategy games (I do better on PC), but I do want to give it a whirl. A little birdie told me there are canon lesbians? Or is that little birdie full of birdie poo?

[identity profile] lacunarity.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There are...kind of canon lesbians? There are two (ostensibly, it's a bit complicated) female characters who, at one point, engage in a lot of illicit hugging and then sleep together, but it is implied that they really did just sleep in the same bed. But they are also kind of lifemates, so it is a perfectly valid reading to assume they get together. In fact, I'd say the canon strongly, strongly implies this.

Also, in canon, the funniest thing is how everyone is trying to bang everyone else. Except the guy with the lion's head. He's not fixing his lionhead because he likes how it discourages the people hitting on him, and gives him more time for Science.

It's a pretty confusing game, all said.

[identity profile] pengiesama.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oho, illicit hugging, ~*~*~so scandalous*~*~. Though the bed thing sort of clinches it. Nippon-Ichi, you're so wonderful when you want to be.

Sounds like a typical highschool to me. And I dunno, I think it makes perfect logical sense that having a lion's head would give one more time for Science. Also more time for hunting and devouring gazelle.

I know the chances are painful, but Namco is RANDOM with their localizations. The first (also read: only) time they brought Tales of Phantasia to the West was a GBA port. Then they do bring (GC)Symphonia. Abyss only on America. But they do bring (360)Vesperia (and fuck it up in Europe, making it compete with FFXIII AND lying about the languages). And then the not-so-good sequel of Symphonia. No news about the next new games after that. Also, I saw this Sue-fest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_the_World:_Radiant_Mythology) in a store once. Most games and ports do stay in Japan, yeah, but you can never know with them.

Probably Vesperia's spit on the eye may influence them, but there are still no details about the game besides HEY, WE'RE MAKING A PORT. So far there are no news of changes in the plot, weird new characters or speshul DLCs or anything. If there were, I'd side with them. But so far there's no reason yet to be pissed off? If they don't want a port that so far is the same old thing, don't play it. I never played the Wii Okami port and the world didn't end.

[identity profile] pengiesama.livejournal.com 2010-10-01 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
I just generally assume that ANY game company is gonna give the middle finger to non-Japanese gamers as regards special editions and special ports...Atlus is the only company I can think of that's sort of broken that trend. And Namco on the other hand seems to completely HATE its overseas gamers (and making money, I guess).

Yeah I don't know anything about what's going on in that fandom but I figure it's a mix of horror at what they might do (with the Vesperia rerelease as a benchmark) with the regular SHRIEKING UNPLEASEABLE FAN-syndrome. It will pass, I'm sure. X3

(It's a good thing you didn't experience the Wii Okami port, I heard the controls were so broken as to be unplayable. X3; And they claimed they were porting to the Wii because it would make the brush "easier to control." I honestly never had problems with the PS2 controls, once I got my bearings...)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-10-02 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Squeenix is kinda like that too, except for the mobile-only games which I'd guess they're too hard to recode for Western cellphones. Then again, they're huge milk-cashing whores.

It sort of makes sense to be scared after Vesperia, but I doubt all of them are into the entire general Tales fandom (it's sort of hard to be? since you'd have to own almost every console ever and know enough Japanese) and those who've only played that one or don't know about Vesperia and Tales of Graces wouldn't have to feel so trolled? Ignorance is bliss after all. I'm hoping theorizing that being a handheld port with PS2 graphics, adding too much new shit would be hard, which decreases the chances of a Patty. When NAMCO makes ~improvements~, they tend to be in PS3 ports, a console that lets them lots of space.

(I have friends who would've never played the game if there wasn't for the port, so I'm a bit grateful about its existence. I still won't buy it not because of the controls, but because I heard they cut the credits and ugh, that seems like a last flipping a bird to Clover Studios! Fuck you, CAPCOM.)

[identity profile] sha-chan.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to justify the attitude of fandom or anything, but something I know is that I get sad whenever a saga I adore comes out in a console/hand-held/whatever that I don't own and I know I won't be able to own. That's what happened to me with the Mario Party adaptations to hand-helds, for example, and even more when I heard of that Paper Mario for 3DS... m-my heart broke a little there. But then again, that may be just me, so.
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (mokona)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand being sad for that, but most of the replies aren't "awww, I can't buy a 3DS ;____;", but "OH MY GOD NAMCO IS TROLLING US DO NOT WANT" and I DON'T GET IT. It's not sadness, it's weird repulsion.

[identity profile] hamsterfactor.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
LULZ. The only Tales game I've been able to play is Phantasia for GBA, so I'd be over the moon to be able to play Abyss on 3DS (which I'll eventually get, I'm sure of that). Hell, I'm super excited about the Ocarina of Time remake since I haven't had a console since Super NES lol.

In conlusion, ports are rad.

I have no idea how Ocarina of Time aged plotwise, and how a twenty-something year old would feel by playing it the first time in 2011, but it's a fucking classic. People either love it or think it's overrated by nostalgia. Personally, that game was one of my top favorites ever.

wtf how does that classify as trolling???

I AM EXCITED but I also hate the American dub with a burning passion so. :|a BUT STILL, isn't it too early for fandom to implode?
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-09-30 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it either! I guess that a game company doing something you wouldn't do is OMG TEH TROLLING? I've seen people preferring a PS3/360 remake instead of same graphics in tiny screen so maybe it's that, or just Nintendo hate, or just wanking for wanking. IDEK. It's never too early, though!

I don't mind the American dub (except that Ion's VA is like a cheese grater holy crap make it stop!) but yeah, the Japanese seiyuu are better and too bad they'd probably use the old dub audio of they want to release it off Japan.

I'm so excited for the 3DS, because I am exactly the same in that I never really finish console games. Handheld games, on the other hand, get finished very quickly!

I want Kid Icarus and OoT for the 3DS so baaad. Even though I have OoT on my Wii virtual console... WHATEVS

I have Ocarina for Gamecube (with the Master Quest redux, even), and another GC disk with several Zeldas including Majora's Mask, and I've always been to lazy to poke it. Then again, I never finished A Link to the Past on GBA so I'm pretty much lazy with the Zelda series in general?

I'm so buying Kid Icarus even if it's a weird flying shooter thing. I don't care, it looks pretty and ridiculous and just awesome.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2010-10-01 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I wish more games were ported to handhelds. I'd probably play them more, since I could play them almost anywhere. Not too sure about 3DS, as I'm worried that 3D will give me too much of a headache.

Also barely related, but I finally found TotA locally at a reasonable price, after not even being able to find it listed on Gamestop's website. Wonder if the sudden availability is related to news of the port?
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2010-10-02 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
We still don't know how 3D is 3DS' 3D, so I hope the games don't look like someone retraced borders on red and green markers. Ports in particular make no sense to be 3D-ized, it's too much money to redo the graphics and not as lucrative as Hollywood movies. (Seriously, I my brother told me George Lucas is re-releasing Star Wars in 3D WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS WRONG WITH HIM)

I heard there was a reprint, actually. No idea how recent that was, but it could be either a coincidence or someone selling their game for this news. Who knows? Either way, that's awesome. (And don't worry, you-know-who isn't active in that fandom at all.)

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2010-10-02 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's re-re-releasing the Star Wars movies (or are there even more re-s?). Either way, completely unnecessary. This won't bring your glory days back, Lucas!

It can't just be one person selling their game; besides that every store in the area had at least one copy, the clerks said that the sudden abundance was due to the warehouse "finding" a whole bunch of copies in storage.

I keep fearing the day he decides to Photoshop out Sir Alec Guiness with Ewan MacGregor at the RotJ ending so it matches the Hayden fiasco. I have lost the track of how many re-releases there are. The company with the license of Evangelion in Spain releases/remasters it every two or three years, I guess they use the same Lucas logic?

...Well, now we know who to blame the shortage of copies for years.
