Row of epic battles
Aaaaaand we're DONE with the main plot! I finished at 4:00 am because I wanted to do it while dusk balls are still working. Hopefully this is the last post about gameplay I'll do, but I can't promise I will shut up about the characters soon :D
Not posting the party because I told you before which ones I was going to use. Leveled all to 50 except for Yoshitsune (now a Samurott) who was a 54 by the last fight. I also evolved Florina to a badass Lilligant, and Almudena to a decent Musharna. Candelaria is still a Lampent for a little longer.
I THINK I WAS STILL UNDERLEVELED. OR MY TEAMS WERE BADLY PLANNED. OR BOTH. OOPS.
Well, the E4 was ranking in various difficulty levels: easiest for me was Grimsley, hardest was Caitlin. But let me tell you, as a character, I fucking loved Shauntal. But of course, she's a writer and a ghost-type trainer, of course she was going to be cool. Oh, and is it me or the E4 were implying that they had just fought N short before I faced them? Huh, I thought he was going to skip every protocol and crash-land on Alder with his dragon, but he did by the rules. That was unexpected. Either way, it was a fucking miracle I survived to them. A miracle involving a million items, but anyway.
Everything that happened later, I had spoiled myself for death weeks ago. So well, so I go to Alder and... N had already beat him. True that his competitive spirit went down the drain when his first Pokémon died, but I think the FUCKING LEGENDARY DRAGON helped? Poor hippie hobo Champion. Then the most ridiculous thing happens, which is the Plasma Castle emerging from underground and surrounding the league.
WAIT, WHAT
No seriously, how does that even work?!? I want backstory on the castle itself, beyond the "oh, and this was Alanis-ironically built with the tears and blood of pokeymans". No, no, I need to know how it got there on the first place without no one noticing why there's a fucking castle there! Was it always under the league area? Or is it like the Figaro castle from Final Fantasy VI, and it moves underground anywhere? (insert obligatory "son of a submariner!" here) Not only that, how the fuck do they come in and out the castle without anyone noticing? Was it buried down during N's childhood? Except it can't be, because the intro flashback has him and his friends in a green zone, which incidentally looks nothing like the arid zones around Victory Road.
REALLY, THIS CASTLE IS CONFUSING ME SO MUCH. I DON'T GET IT AT ALL. AND IT'S AS HUGE AS GAME FREAK'S BANK ACCOUNT. HOW I SHOT WEB. FUCKING MAGNEMITES, HOW DO THEY WORK.
Okay, fiiiiiiiiiine, I'll stop questioning Ghetsis' Barbie mansion. I'm going innnnnn.
But first, let's make a list of stuff Ghetsis played/read/watched too much during his younger years:
- The Legend of Zelda
- Dungeons and Dragons
- Chess
- Final Fantasy
- Anything about the knights templar
- Machiavelli's The Prince
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (for parenthood tips from all things)
- The TVTropes' articles on Magnificent Bastard, Evil Chancellor, and Xanatos Roulette spinoffs
Actually, fandom, where ARE the Ghetsis Ikari manips/fanarts? Or the Son I Am Disappoint meme? (Incidentally, I've seen N drawn as Kaworu Nagisa. I DON'T EVEN)
Yay for Cheren being behind me on the E4 beating! (So they fought three kids today? Ouch.) Yay for most of the gym leaders making it to help out! Is it me or the Mazorca Trio were the ones less fleshed out in the end?
So let's explore the castle, if only the ninja triad would let me. The grunts hanging around are very different to the other grunts: most of them are actually questioning the Team's principles because they're growing fond of Pokémon. And there's the loose grunts who actually see them as tools, probably more into Ghetsis' plans than the others. In any case, very far away from the PLASMAAAAAAAA LORD EEEEEEEEEEEN type of grunt.
The "goddesses" were translated to Spanish to "muses" instead, I don't know why considering we get a lot of video game gods all the time. No point to discuss what they are because they left that hanging, but I must say that after all my "this is the gen of hippies!" jokes, the fact they represent peace and love is SO ADEQUATE XDDDDDDD But what really pisses me off, why didn't they help N when he was little?
So N's room. I was familiar with it because of the fanarts. But it was fun and depressing to explore by myself. Toy trains, basketball and a hoop (LOL at Harmonia being written on the ball), a skateboard with a miniramp, a flying airplane, geometrical art *coughmathgeekcough*. It's so sad, all those expensive toys and no human warmth? Only surrounded by mistreated Pokémon, and occasionally people working for Ghetsis. It's more than likely that his first real contact with humans besides the Team Plasma folks (who idolize him so they don't really count) was... with the MC, really. It's no wonder he knows shit about the normal ways to socialize, he's bound to give creepy vibes.
Oh, and another thing. The whole fighting to test who's right might come off as incredibly silly. But think that a) he was raised with Pokémon and that's their way to deal with most shit, b) history is written by the winners of wars, c) that's how SHIT GETS DONE IN JRPGS, d) N already was doubting his ideals, and in his naivety and childish personality he might think that only the purest hero is the one who's right and the strongest, IDK. He's crazy, so...
Also, Zekrom did a Kool-Aid Man and broke the throne wall XDDDDDDDDDDD
Fight with N wasn't a piece of cake, but it wasn't as consuming as some Elite or motherfucking Ghetsis. JESUS, GHETSIS' BATTLE WAS HORRIBLE. I actually DIED the first time because his stupid dragon swept my team like a mop. Yeaaaaaaaaah, I know I suck, let's not talk about this ever again.
But back to the plot, obligatory OH GOD WHAT A DOUCHEBAG tl;dr goes here. Actually, I think he outdouches Gendo Ikari in regards of psychological child abuse: at least Shinji had it clear that his dad was using him for creepy fake means. Incidentally, I don't know how it is in the English version, but they were very vague when it comes to the Harmonias' relation. Ghetsis just said that N wasn't worthy of sharing his last name. The word "son" was never mentioned, while I think in the Japanese script they used it straight up.
I like that Alder and Cheren were there just in time to hear Ghetsis' round of ultimate bullshit. Cheren all "ugh, this guy is making me sick" was awesome. And Alder dragging him after all the crap he got from him at the desert was A++ karma too. But what I don't get is that N says that the champion forgave him, but... you know man, Alder is not the police, I'm pretty sure they're going to be looking for you anyway XD N was misguided, sure, but what his organization did was still illegal. So I guess it makes sense he left Unova. But it's depressing too because the closest thing to a human friend he had was the MC, and now they part ways. I hope he can grow up and become a more functional person in the future. The ending was really open on N's part, not because he says goodbye but because I got the feeling he still doesn't understand most of the problem, and what he'll do now is try to figure things out.
I also wonder if he's going to release the current Pokémon in his team, now that he's seen how strong a trainer-poke friendship can be. Especially when it comes to Zoroark and Klinklank. The latter could be the same Klink he befriended at Chargestone Cave (physically, the Klink family seems the kind of mechanical, geometrical design N would dig). And when it comes to Zoroark... well, there was a Zorua in the castle when he was a little boy, so considering how rare that species is, I have no doubt it's THAT same guy. And if he is, after all these years he must really love N in a similar way most regular Pokémon love their trainers. So he should at least keep those two.
I LOL'd at Looker giving me the super rod (ABOUT TIME!) and then saying it has nothing to do with the Seven Sages XD How about I tried to fish them? :DDD
Okay, so in the end, thoughts on N. He gave me different vibes in the game from what I got from fanart and spoilers. He's definitely creepy. He's definitely weird. He's definitely batshit. But at the same time, I still say he's at least half as endearing as the fanworks. I don't know why exactly, but it's easy to feel sorry and hope he can solve hisIsshus issues without losing that love and most of that innocence. But yeah, the guy needs help, probably in the form of human friends and meeting more Pokémon who had positive experiences with humans. I want him to mold his ideals to a compromise, to make a difference that doesn't depend of becoming a hero or a delinquent, because obviously he's smart, strong, and charismatic enough to move masses. I think he might be the most complex character I've seen in a Pokémon game (or any game this year), so this is why I can't shut up about him.
