I for one thought that, as the series drew to a close, we got the best possible outcome: it didn't make a statement. Yes, it's nice when series or artistic productions do that, but I have a constant fear of how negative, broken or terrible they can be in anime, specially in a magic girls show where the chances of the message also hitting the feminist cause like a cruise missile can be pretty high.
Also, when anime series make statements, they're usually bland, stupid, or they try to get philosophical but they're usually some combination of: YAMI KOKORO HIKARI SHINJITE MAMORU and then MINDFUCK.
This series? It ended not making a statement. It ended up deciding "fuck it" and, frankly, I'm cutting my loses and celebrating that.
