Withdrawal
Between the fact today's been a lousy day, and the FMA manga withdrawal (it's 8th!!!), hearing Bohemian Rhapsody made me cry. I'm so odd.
Some pet peeves in general when it comes to icons:
1. When the iconmaker gives a link to the reply page directly. Maybe I'm weird, but it gives me two feelings about that:
1.a the iconmaker is a comment whore and tries to force anyone who browses around to comment
1.b the iconmaker has a layout without perm link, and is either lazy to delete everything after the html, or he/she doesn't know anything about URLs.
I dunno, I happen to like to see other people's comments when I check somebody else's icons out. Because I'm curious, and if I like the same icon 90% of them took, I might not use it on LJ, so yeah. I like to read the comments, even if I don't comment, like or take any myself.
2. When it comes to a 100 challenge, and someone takes a SERIES, yet he/she only uses
2.a the main character(s)
2.b the couple(s) he/she ships
2.c his/her favorite character(s)
2.d popular stuff to get tons of love
I think it'd be a real challenge to use almost all characters, whether you like them or not. Because it's more balanced that way, you know, and perhaps someone will be grateful if you made one icon of that obscure character they like so much. Don't you think it'd be nicer? ^^ Don't you think it's a better contribution for fandom than doing the same character and using the same images over and over again? Be original! Use the character you hate as well, your fingers are not going to fall out! Even though you ship a hawt ghey couple, some icons of the canon couples (especially the ones people take for granted, like parents and married people) would be cool as well. Your computer won't get dirty, I swear.
If you like this character or ship so much, and you have a lot of images of them, take them only as the subject! You'll be saving people's time.
Also, if more than half your character challenge icons are OTP-centric, maybe you should rethink on why you choose the couple and not the pairing itself. I'm not saying not to make them, with some limits, but I saw a challenge about Harry where a lot of them were H/Hr and... ugh. Don't take the character because the couple was taken, please. Just wait for the other person to finish, or something.
I'm saying it because I want to take RG Veda after I'm done with Eriol and Yuuko at iconfiend100. And even though most of the images are Ashura and/or Yasha, I'm not doing 100 of them (not only because I don't like them... I will do some, yeah, because a lot of folks like them.) I want to do icons from everybody! From the rest of the seven stars and Kujaku to really minor characters *cough*Tenoh*cough*. It's a bit frustrating, finding only Ashura icons on LJ. I think the only Kujaku icons I've seen are mine, and that sucks so much (might exist, but haven't seen them yet.) So many pretty illustrations from the girls, and so little people using them... Pam has used a lot of Kendappa, but what about Karura and Souma? Or Gigei and Karura's little sister?
The more I think about it, the more I want to do this. But I really should finish my previous icons first.
And I'm tempted to apply for manga!Kurogane at manga100. Not faaaair.

I did a couple Kujaku icons (what with him being my co favourite Clamp character along with Yuuko) but they all sucked. I did a few of Kendappa as well.
Some characters like Gigei are really difficult to do because finding coloured images of them in the first place is very difficult.

That's true, but I vividly remember one color image with her. That's why I think it's possible.

Those were Ten-oh's hands...Interesting enough, I went and used almost the kind of style that always wins in clamp_icontest (the best I could), just to experiment on how well I'd do when following the trend, and the result was more or less the same than when I do things my way. So really, it doesn't matter a lot.
By the way, once you tried to cheer me up on another icon rant and I never replied. Thanks for that ^^ I think you really nailed my problem: I have low self-confidence and low feedback to lean at. Not only in icons: in everything.
I should convince myself: tons of awards won't make you a cool iconist; tons of comments and people friending your ijournal won't make you a cool iconist; trendy icons won't make you a cool iconist. (Hell, I don't know what a cool iconist is anymore...)

I've noticed that too, people only use one or two characters in a series, it get's boring! Even if i dont like the character/ship, sometimes its nice to have a breath of fresh air. I've never done a 100 challenge, though i've thought about it. How long does it take usually? Im pretty new to icon making. I get so intimidated by people and their awesome icons e_e!

About being new, I've seen people doing claims in a very n00b level, so there's nothing to be scared of. My icons are not awesome, but they do look a bit better than some.

What I hate is when someone claims a character and then you find all those crack!pairing icons inside. Like... I believe someone claimed Kagome and there were like a thousand Miroku/Kagome icons. What the hell, if you're that biased, you should have claimed the pairing instead, since there are fans of the character who likes her canon pairing for sure (like it wasn't obvious in Inu Yasha anyway).
I find it kind of annoying, really. It's ok when it isn't that obvious in canon (like, say, some Bleach pairings) but Inu Yasha?? :O
And someone claimed Roy/Ed at manga100. I'm really curious as to how the hell she's gonna do it (given that Roy/Ed is absurd x 3000000 in the manga and you'd have to call the CSI team to find hints of it). I could have claimed RoyAi at manga100... but I already had my iconfiend100 claim and I thought trying to make 100 RoyAi icons from the manga only + 100 mixed ones would make me repeat myself like whoa xP
And 100 Kurogane icons from you would be love <3 I'm falling more and more for the guy in each new volume :D

Yeah, that Miroku/Sango thing was WTF O.o During the short period I watched Inuyasha, Miroku/Sango was so canon for me...
I get the feeling they'd do, for the Roy/Ed thing, ye olde methode of dividing the icon in half and pasting two separate images. For the 100 things @.@
You aren't following the TRC spoilers and raws, right? You should, even if it's just for this arc. They're in the middle of Kurogane's flashbacky backstory! It's so twisted, man. And his parents? Screw Sorata/Arashi, they're *the* TRC married OTP! <3<3

Um. As for Kujaku...the same thing happened with him as later happened to me with Icchan in 'Angelic Layer'. Started reading/watching the series because it was CLAMP & with a general interest in all the characters. Then HE shows up and fairly soon I have to admit I'm only watching/reading to see what the heck is going on with this weird/cool guy. *lol* (i.e. they totally stole the show)

You know what's sad? Half the Sakura icons are made with the EXACT same image! Bitch please, CLAMP don't stop drawing her, so they can be more creative than that!!
