So in a moment of procrastination last night, I read Magic Kaito by Gosho Aoyama (aka Conan mangaka). Now, I've always liked detectives since I was little, but Japan's obsession with what they call "phantom thieves" is contageous. I've already read mangas about kaitou, like DNAngel and a bit of 20 Mensou no Onegai. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne I didn't like.

But Magic Kaito, while not being serious, was so nice to read. Unlike Conan, which is all serious with random comedy relief, Kaito is comedy with random serious moments. I enjoyed it a lot, maybe even a bit more than Conan (then again, it could be because I needed to read something light at that moment).

(Sometimes it felt like something Rumiko Takahashi had created instead of Aoyama XD But I think that's since I'm not so familiar with Aoyama's comedy manga. I remembered [livejournal.com profile] toshikun's theory at Misión Tokyo, whether it's true or not I see where it came from XD)

I really like Kaito's character. I like how his dorkiness is so obvious in his manga, something you couldn't see in his cameos at DC. He acts his age a lot, and that's cool.

(Also, it's weird how I think he looks average cute normally, but when he's dressed up as Kid... dayum, he looks hot~~~)

I can't choose a side! Both detectives and kaitou are awesome.

I thought the same when I first read Magic Kaitou. Especially the Kaito/Aoko mop-chase in the classroom. It just seems so much like the romantic-comedy Takahashi writes. XD

Aoyama has a very unique range in his writings: MK is comedy with bits of seriousness, DC is drama/suspense with bits of comedy, and Yaiba is just...crack XD;

One of the greatest things about MK is that you do get to see Kaito outside of his KID guise being a normal, dorky teen. But yah, you're right- he goes from cute to suave the minute he puts on the KID gear XD

The Kaito/Aoko scenes are so Takahashi-ish it's blatant XDDDD

I still haven't read Yaiba. I'm not sure it'll be of my taste, but I'll give it a chance anyway if I can find it.

I loved Kaito's dorkiness and normality. It's so natural for him to cross the line from idiot to awesome. But I also like it when he acts all silly while he's Kaitou Kid, because you obviously can't see that on the Conan cameos, so he just seemed to be a mwahahahaha flawless criminal mind of doooooooom! when he's totally not. He's just smart and mischievous, but not perfect or evil, and I really like that on him.
