taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Ling Yao & Lan Fan / behind your back)
Kiri ☂ ([personal profile] taotrooper) wrote2008-03-20 04:35 pm

Isn't "one-sided from both sides", like, not one-sided at all?

In yet another edition of "I must be broken inside", I realized last night in the RP chan that there are several fandoms I've followed or at least went through that are infamous for being way too slash/yaoi-friendly. And while lots of fans get into it because of teh ghey? I checked them out because of the plot or the premise. Most CLAMP mangas? Check. Good Omens? Check. Gyakuten Saiban? Check. Petshop of Horrors? Check. Hell, even it's so tiny, Mononoke? Check.

But anyway, here's that poll meme that's been going around. Anyone who'd see the options and doesn't know me would think I'm one of those rabid het-focused people. It's more like most of my main pairings happen to be straight, yet I do have gay and lesbian OTPs. They're just minor.

[Poll #1157531]

I'm missing a lot of stuff, like EVA, Princess Tutu, Twelve Kingdoms, Aria, Avatar, Discworld, random videogames... AND HAN/LEIA! *facepalm* And I limited to two per series, so the space ran out for other pairings. But it's hard to make space D: I should make more tiny polls like this one, just to weird you out with my unusual shipping :D

Now this other meme [livejournal.com profile] solesakuma forces me to do. I copied it from Fujur because her post was closer, though. Ah, but the meme says nothing about being forced to tag, so I'm not tagging anyone XD

People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs and replace any question they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves. Tag 8 people. Those who are tagged cannot refuse. These 8 people must state who they were tagged by. You cannot tag the person who tagged you. Continue this game by sending this to 8 other people.
Because, ya know, if you don't do it when you were tag you will be cursed to a life of misery and unhappiness. In 2002, John Doe didn't continue the meme and the next day the Fire Nation invaded his home.

1. You have 50 dollars in your pocket. What do you do with it?
I RAID AMAZON.COM, BABY.
...
Okay, no. I pay Kimihiro.net's hosting because it's due ;_;

2. What is your most guilty pleasure?
I always feel weird when I hunt for pairing fanart, even if the stuff I check is almost never pron-like, and when it IS pron-like I don't look at it much. Watching TV (real TV, with remote and zapping included) frequently ends up with me checking out some weird, random crap out of boredom (but never national shows: I have honor!). I don't know why I feel stranger about it and not when downloading trendy shows.
Also, weaving original fiction in my head. I never write them down because they're not interesting or good, but I find myself doing them too often.

3. Outdoors or indoors?
Indoors.

4. Are you confused as to what lies ahead of you?
Yeah. Especially the next OS2 exam on September.

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?
In a boring job, most likely. *sigh*

6. Which is more blessed: loving someone or being loved by someone else?
...I have no idea. Can't it be both?

7. What's your theory on dating?
I've never dated and I'm too lazy to make up a different question. NEXT.

8. What is the one thing you love most in life?
If I say being involved with fandoms, will I sound like a lifeless loser? I have no friends, I can't understand this country, I hate my university, but when I'm doing retarded things with people far away from me it's almost like I'm alive and not alone.
I mean, I love my family a lot, but I doubt a single one of them can understand me or this fact.

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy recently?
Answering the last question. I'm crying a bit.
That we're in motherfucking Clow country, and CLAMP have us in this fucking plotloop. Stop cockteasing me and bring Touya and Yukito. I'm in a point I'm not going to mind much if they get butchered by emo plotlines and/or LOL plotholes.

10. What do you want most in life?
Friends in real life, more things to geek about, and designing websites for a living. And self-confidence.

11. If you could pick between being a good singer or a good dancer, which would you choose?
I love to sing-a about the moon-a and the June-a and the Spring-a~~

12. If you found out that your best friend is going out with your boyfriend/girlfriend, how would you react?
"...I finally snapped, got imaginary friends and couple, and they're cheating on me... even if they're not real. My mind hates me, dammit."
I wouldn't talk to either again. And I'd mope for eons.

13. If you could change anything, would you?
About what?

14. What kind of person do you think you are?
I wonder about that myself.

15. Do you believe in something higher than humankind?
Do you mean gods or aliens?

16. Which fictional character could you see yourself marrying?
It's gotta be Watanuki. I suck at chores and can't cook. Besides, I need someone sweet yet isn't afraid to yell the crap out of me.

17. Would you give your whole heart in a relationship?
Ask me when I'm in one.

18. Do you have a motto? If yes, which one?
No, but now I feel like coming up with one.

19. What type of friends do you like?
That they put up with my idiocy. That they have something in common with me. That they won't stop caring halfway. That they're funny and/or witty.
...demanding, aren't I?

20. Do you have an all-time favorite song?
Dude, I'm a GEMINI. I can't even pick a favorite song for this month!

ETA: Bzuh? Notifications aren't working :/ That's rich, LJ, keep on with the stupid in code AND fail.

A lot of your pairings were ones I was considering putting down until I limited it to only my absolute favorite. :D

And Han/Leia ♥

I have nothing against yaoi or yuri but I also hate it when fans will only watch something for the boys love or even just to see a pairing get together. Of course I get into pairings too but I usually watching something for the characters and story. The ship love comes after I know the characters.

I ran out of space for Al/Mei ;_; So tragic.

Ever since I got into CLAMP and some shounen manga, I did sort of get used to it. There are people in my flist who got into some series because of the good porn and the solid fanbase. I try not to mind much about the different criteria as long as they don't bash the original canon (okay, sure, for some fandoms I bet the fanon can be better, but don't wank about it) or try to understand it. Sadly, only a minority does that.

I'm just amazed that in my "gayer fandoms" I was more curious about the plots or the basic premise.

There's not such thing as too slash/yaoi-friendly. There is such thing as het-phobic. But it's a whole other thing, I'd say. I definitly didn't get in Clamp or Good Omens because of the ghey (dude, there's no gay in GO, in any case).

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, that is true (unless it's something like a hardcore yaoi manga). It's still funny that I don't consider the fanbases before checking out a fandom: I always pick out of plot or characters, not possible pairings.

Yeah, there isn't real gay. Yet I've heard that some people take the "angels and demons are sexless unless they really want to!" line literally as an excuse to draw/write anatomically correct (and bishounen-esque) Crowley/Aziraphale buttsex.
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
riiiiiiiight. You know I kinda like some of the Crowley/Arizaphale fics, because they're well written and stuff - I'd never have thought of the pairing by myself but good fics are good fics. But that's... I mean, if you want to find gay characters in Neil Gaiman books or SFF in general you can. It's out there. Go read it. So what's the point in pretending asexual characters are actually sexual in canon? (of course I could also point to the SFF books with other asexual characters... it's one of the nice thing about SFF).
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Toph / LULZ)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit I like the pairing in this non-sexual, friendly way. I haven't read much fic but the ones I did check out were interesting or funny. But yeah, it's probably CLAMP to blame that I don't see the problem with shipping them or writing them romantically as asexual. But what you're saying, that's the thing! Having them grow some penises just to fuck each other is too human to feel IC to me.

Doesn't irk me as much as bishifying Aziraphale in fanart, but it's sort of close. Then again, I'm too casual in the GO fandom to care too much.

ETA: And now I recall there was another semipopular 'slash' pairing in GO fandom: Famine/Pollution. I'm not sure the horseriders had a real gender, but since War was described as a female I guess that might make them -all but Death, obviously- gendersome.

Told ya we do have pairings in common |Db *all "eee" over Kenshin/Kaoru and Kenshin/Tomoe*

I usually kinda forget how much I love Kenshin ;.;

Yay \o/

Dude, confession tiem: when I watched the first episode of Kenshin, I had missed the whole thing and only got to see the "I don't care who you are, I want the vagabond to stay" dialog. And I was all AHGHJAG GOTTA WATCH THIS TOMORROW, without even knowing what that anime was about: with just three minutes I was shipping them. Seeing there was OMGSAMURAI action the next day was even more win.

Yet I also loved Kenshin/Tomoe: the OVAs were the first anime that made me cry ;_;

Actually, besides Susano/Kushi, the Oranges, and a couple of Important Female/Dead Husband (and the Cutters, but they're fucking creepy), there aren't more canon pairings. I'm pretty sure you'll like Susano/Kushi: they're so sweet together ^^

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably will. I love Susano. :D

Bit I can't tell if I like Ammy/Waka yet because I've seen so little of them together. I'll wait until later to make up my mind on that one.

Well, I started shipping it during the final boss battle. Before that, he just randomly pops around and is more about cryptic bantering with Issun. So, er, it'll take you a while to see why I'm fond of it, whether you like it or not.

...Ironically, I can't stand any other Ammy pairing, yet I don't mind seeing Waka paired up in crack pairings. Go figure.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I ticked everything I'm familiar with. Haha!

When people get into a series because it's teh ghey it makes me go :|

I mean when people get into series period because of the ships (instead of checking it out and just happening to fall for a ship) I don't really get it. I mean I can see "oh the romance is really great in this" being a pimp point for some series, but to literally have it the only reason you're into something... O.o;
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Chopper / squee!)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL XD

The thing is, some people even read fanfic or look at doujinshi for fandoms they're not familiar, just because the pairing looks teh hawt. And if they read enough fanworks, in the best of cases they might check the original canon in order to write/play/draw them. But before they do that, they're already fapping to enamored of the fanon version of the ship.

I became a Clamp fangirl before knowing what yaoi was. And there are series I can't see having gay pairings, even if most fan(girls) say is soooo slashy.

Same here, especially in shounen series. Actually, I even started to first ship a gay couple in CLAMP (Touya/Yuki, for the record) when I watched it for a second time.

[identity profile] lacunarity.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha, CLEARLY I HAVE NO ROMANCE IN MY SOUL. Or I tend to get into stories for their plots and concepts, and see the pairings as something that generally has to come in a story but I'm not that interested in it. Not that I think they're bad--there's only two pairings on your list that I actually don't like. (Haruhi is just so much funnier when she's obliviously trampling Tamaki's heart)

Mononoke is known for being yaoi-friendly? But. There's only one reoccurring male character. Where is the yaoi coming from?
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I have yet to check a fandom out just because a popular pairing is my kind of ship or it just looks pleasing. I can't ship until I know the characters well, and it's not my priority when enjoying a canon ^^ I'm more plot and character driven.

It is pretty weird, but a big part of the fandom is all over medicine seller/his other self O_o Even if it's physically impossible, that we know of. (Hell, he might not even have a separate personality like Yukito and Yue or all those Yu-gi-oh characters; we can't tell at all what his other self IS.)

On one hand, the transformation sequences look sort of erotic sometimes. (some examples in this AMV (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xw4ve_1gWec)) On the other, WHUT. Then again, I'm not normally for PWP premises, which is the only way it can work out.

I noted that as fanservice, like Sailor Moon's transformation. :P I do find Medicine Seller's voice sexy as hell, but I'm too confused not only with the nature of his two selves but with all the show's mythology and graphic simbology to begin shipping him anyone. XD Forget about writing fic; the mere idea of reading fic in that fandom scares me. ;;

I'd only read fic if it's a very vague crossover with something mythical enough, like XXXHOLiC or Mushishi or Okami. But in the matter of pure fics, I wouldn't read pairing pieces: an extra arc with made up mononokes or something trying to explain what MS really is could be interesting, but they're way too hard to write and I bet they don't exist.

[identity profile] fujurpreux.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
but they're way too hard to write and I bet they don't exist.
Yeah, I'd love to read one of those, but you'd have to be an expert on Japanese culture to write it. *sighs*

Medicine seller/uber-medicine seller. Huh. Okay, I think I can see the appeal of that, even though I'd never come up with it on my own. They're both such blank slates, it'd probably be easy to put whatever dynamic you'd like into their relationship.
