Rec me crap to watch/read, please? >:
I shouldn't won't be able to check them out soon because I do have an exam on the 10th, but here it goes. Recommend me anime, manga, TV shows you think I might like. No matter how old they are. Mind you, I might even prefer old stuff to boring new series. Hell, if you want even throw series you don't think I might like anyway but you love a lot. This is your chance to poke me or change my mind on things.
The only restriction is length. When it comes to shounen or American TV, please don't rec lengthy, ongoing fandoms. Right now I'm looking for autoconclusive series. Long manga is fine, though, but notice I've already given a chance to several long Jump series I ended up dropping out of boredom (Bleach, DGM, KHR).
My preferred genres are comedy, supernatural, fantasy, historic/mythological, suspense, horror, or just quirky crap. I prefer interesting plots or characters over prettiness of animation/actors. I will accept romance as long as it's set in one or more of the genres abovegirls crossdressing is guilty pleasure; if it's BL I'm not taking seme/uke stereotypes, if it's het or yuri I won't enjoy mushy saccharine (and in any, I won't like abusive couples or hatesex). Anyway, in doubt there's a list of fandoms I loved in my profile. Or just ignore it and throw things at me.

Ah, y Ruin Explorers, también de Planeta y también de fantasía heroica con toques humorísticos.
La verdad es que en mangas que saquen ahora estoy totalmente desconectada, pero en su día adoré esos.

Most of the mysteries involve puppets in some way and are nicely creepy. *grin*
Aaaaaaand there are torrents at animesuki but they look slow and I can't find any direct downloads..

Another new but short series you might enjoy is Natsume Yuujinchou which is just a slow peaceful episodic anime about a boy who can see and interact with demons/spirits. Nothing spectacular but it is really sweet and relaxing. And I think it will only be 12 episodes.
And also yay to Dennou Coil that is ♥
edit: And hooray for Life on Mars too!
Although 2008 has really been a weak year for anime. I would recommend older stuff but then I am less sure of what you have already seen regarding that.

Well Toward the Terra (which I think someone recommend to you below) is good sci-fi. More on the serious side so I am not sure how you feel about that but since it is based on the 70's manga it has a lot of classical sci-fi elements.
Fantastic Children is pretty good and under appreciated and its character designs are very reminiscent of older anime.
I also think you might like Haibane Renmei if you have not already seen that one.

For Gothic Shoujo Crack, I'll rec Kaori Yuki and You Higuri. I have yet to read a complete work of either, but while the het romances do have a mushy tendency, they're still pretty interesting, and they also have "ZOMG! SLASH! LOOK! SLASH!" but, along with Clamp, are the rare slash in anime/manga that doesn't annoy me.
W Juliet (14 vols, complete) is shoujo fluff, but not-saccharine, and avoids a lot of irritating shoujo conventions.
Night of the Beasts is 6 vols and is steeped in the supernatural and mythology, and while it's partly driven by romance, the romance isn't remotely sappy.
Basara is my favorite shoujo is and, while it can have it's mushy parts, the romance is recondary to the individual plotlines and growth of the hero and heroine, and the romance is primarily important in how it affects them, and the mangaka never takes the easy route with anything.
Claymore starts slow, but once it gets going, it becomes the shounen action that riuned other shounen for me. It is still going, but feels like it might be getting ready to wind down. The anime is complete, though, and even though it falls apart near the end, it's pretty good.
Madlax is 26 eps, and pretty spiffy.

The first volume of Fairy Cube has the same "leads aren't that interesting" problem (except they were both interesting in the first charpter, then weren't by the end of the volume) but I love the fairy shopkeeper and his pixie-like assistant who's in love with him, and the story is insane. Haven't read the Cain/Godchild stuff you.
You Higuri I've read what there is of Cantarella, and the first three Seimaden books. Seimaden is kinda pure cheese, but in an awesome way(and for certain reasons involving swords, I want to know if it or X/1999 came first.) Cantarella doesn't get going until the main character becomes a rthless SOB in the 3nd or 3rd volume, but is the root of my love of Love Triangles of Epic Doom And Can We Just Do A Threesome Now?

*approves* ^^
I vaguely remember mentioning the Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro manga before, but I'll recommend it again anyway ^^ 500% better than the anime, with freaky surreal art, quirky characters, dark humour and just plain crazy stuff. It's hard to believe that it's serialised in Sounen Jump!
Um, apart from that... I just finished Genshiken. Do you like slice-of-life comedies featuring nerds? If so I'd recommend it.

Anyway, TV wise I'm thinking maybe you'd like Extras. It's awkward humour a la The Office, but much more light. Plus, the cameos are lulzworthy. I don't know, I just love it very much. It's also 12 episodes + Christmas special only.
Also, Hippies. It's a bit old, but it's got Simon Pegg and Julian Rhind-Tutt and it's actually really silly, but fun, plus it's only 6 episodes. It's been released on DVD recently, so I think it shouldn't be that hard to find.
Anime wise, I love Noein with all my might, but I'm not sure it it'd be your kind of thing. Basically sci-fi with time travel, mixed with slice-of-life a bit, plus weird art. Also, some mindfuck. I truly adore it ♥

The thing I love about Noein is that it's what happens when you have a guy who never gets over his first crush and toss in alternate realities.

Also, since you like Twelve Kingdoms you might want to check out The Heroic Legend of Arslan as well. It's a fantasy series. I've never seen the manga translated anywhere, but the anime is really good. Unfortunately, they never finished it...But what there is, is awesome.

Te adoraría más si comentaras el anime D8♥♥♥Escaflooooowne!!! Yo debería reverlo, casi no recuerdo nada |D JIGOKU SHOUJO ES AWESOME. Um. Pregúntale a Fu, sino 8DDDD;
Wolf's Rain es genial ;; Y DRESDEN FILES. TE LO RUEGO TE LO IMPLORO. MIIIIIIRALO, SI? ;;
...lo siento, pero es que NADIE lo ha visto y Fu y yo nos sentimos algo solitas ;^;

The books are excellent, but the TV version much less so.
Also, just got to second the rec for The Heroic Legend of Arslan.
And YAY Life on Mars DOUBLE YAY Wolf's Rain. :)

With that out of the way, I second Natsume Yuujinchou. One of the few anime next to Dennou Coil that made me cry. I just read volume 1 of "Me and the Devil Blues" and it's an insane mix historical(biographical?) fiction and supernatural horror. I also have to recommend "Chikyu Misaki", because it's awesome and only three volumes long... good for anyone wanting a good mix of everything on a budget.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-24 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)Ever checked out Saiunkoku Monogatari? It's based on an ongoing novel by Yukino Sai. Currently there are two seasons of 39 episodes each. The first one has been licensed, but since the licensor apparently went under, finding it shouldn't be too hard.
It's basically a XI/X-century China-styled fantasy with a heavily feministic bent. The main character, Shuurei, has always dreamt of being a court official, but since she is a woman in a patrialchal society, she can't. The first time she is able to enter the court is as the royal consort - after being bribed by the emperor's advisors (despite being the firstborn daughter of one of the highest-ranking families, her family is poor for complicated plot-related reasons) she agrees to assume that position for six months. However, that's only a cover - her true purpose is convincing the emperor to actually rule his kingdom. Apparently since his enthronement, he hasn't taken any interest whatsoever in governing, hasn't attended court debates even once, and is rumoured to be gay, which sort of poses a problem for the whole heir issue. And it goes down from here...
As I said, there are some quite feminist overtones in this series, as pretty much the first half of it is dedicated to Shuurei fighting the establishment as she proves to others she can do as much of a good job at governing as men, if not better. Then there is the great focus on politics and court intrigue and Shuurei learning to be a good court official, and, to top it off, a great and tangled web of relationships, with numerous marriage candidates for the main heroine. (Which, eventually, brings us to the conflict of career vs work, and marriage out of love vs political marriage.)
But all of this serves only as a backdrop for more loveable, realistic characters that you can shake a stick at. The emperor - Ryuuki - is adorkable and wise and puppy-like in a way that reminds me strongly of Tamaki (and consequently, Shuurei reminds me of Haruhi in her handling of him). And don't even make me mention the many "aww"s and ";-;"s that were had during Ryuuki's backstory.
Though naturally, I need to warn you - the cast is big. BIG. There are eight main royal families, each of them with multiple family branches (genealogy in this series can get ugly sometimes), and the myriads of lower nobles, court officials, commoners, extended family, etc. Though I have to commend the author for running with the idea of minor characters growing in importance overtime (Hi Shusui!), and periodically bringing characters back to remind us that they weren't just, y'know, plot devices that have served their purpose and now must be thrown away.
And finally, the single reason why I love this series so much? It overthrows the anime sterotype of "if you're over 30 and not a pritty sparkly bishie, you can't be awesome". Now that I think of it, much of the awesome is done by characters (Yuushun, Kai Yu, Shouka, Senka, Ou Ki, Ruka, Eiki, the list goes on) who, by normal anime standards would be considered moldy.
...This turned out way too tl;dr that I had planned. Sorry. Bottom line: please do watch Saiunkoku.
