It won't eeeeeend

Aaaaagh, just end already, week! Now I got my period, not faaaair.

1. I do wonder about the trend with American (and Japanese) anime companies streaming series online. Because, you know, I'd think it would be cool if only they wouldn't IP-block other countries. Then, unless it's a monstrously popular thing, you won't see underground/secret fansubs around. So anyone outside North America is pretty much screwed and left to wait for native fansubs which are lot slower.

2. Oh crap, the scan about the Namco Tales news wasn't fake?! D: D: D: I-I'm still getting the 360 ToV version, bitches. I've said it in several places already, but retconning a story to add a new character and new relationships just reeks of possible Gruyère-like plotholes. Just look at the current CLAMP mangas for an example.

3. In more relevant-to-my-interests novelties, yet another ToA manga spinoff called Tales of the Abyss: Tsuioku no Jade, which I'll hopefully call "Can It Be Keterburg Teims Nao?". Huh. And the writer is one who wrote the game script. The strangest thing, however, is the fact that it's going to be published in Asuka. Does anyone scan the whole magazine, btw? Also, how long will it be, Gaiden-length one-shot or what? It's really odd, but Sunrise's homepage mentions Nebilim so obviously I want to see this like burning. (Is this a sample of the mangaka, however? It looks like an average fanart, bleh)

4. Speaking of manga spinoffs based on videogame, here's manga based on a videogame spinoff (pffft). Gyakuten Kenji. More Edgeworth, yawn hurray. *waves the tiniest flag* I want to play this game, but this manga doesn't seem that interesting or fun. And a Gyakuten Saiban 4 official manga for when, CAPCOM? Sob, I'll settle with one chapter, even. (Gumshoe's faces are priceless, though!)

Well I hope you guys get it in Spain, I know they are getting it in France so it's not entirely out of the question. The thing is you have to blame Japan for this as I think they work out deals with each country individually so it's not up to the American companies. On another note I am pretty sure someone will rip the official subs and they will appear on Tokyo Tosho.

Oh, I wasn't talking about FMA:B (I don't even know if I'll be watching it). It was a generic rant. I guess I've been boggling over this trend since Crunchyroll pulled their dick move on January. I've heard that Bandai has a Youtube channel and is streaming some translated series only to North America (not that it affects me since I'm not into Code Geass or Gundam 00, but yeah). And then I heard the Australia + North America deal on the new Hagaren (didn't know about France) and boggled further.

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I personally don't like it either even though I know I am one of the lucky ones. I think streaming legally is a good thing but I think it should be available to everyone. It all comes down to money though and just like they charge different prices for DVDs in different markets they make separate deals with each country for streaming.

edit: Although I know there are some series on CR that are available worldwide.

But I still kinda don't get it yet. They're not really winning money by making it watchable -the profit will come with the hooked fans buying the DVDs much later. I wouldn't exactly have an issue if I didn't know that by making all efforts to make their translated version the exclusive one, they're cutting all chances for other countries (where it's NOT licensed) to have it available. i.e, You just know that if someone from a different country uploads their fansub for non-Americans, the Big Company will get them bahleeted.

I wonder if it's possible for youtube to just ban American IPs for those videos instead of putting them down. That way, the US is forced to check the Funi/Bandai/Crunchy/whatever version and no harm is done unless they download the fansub from a torrent, but that can't be helped

ETA: Oh, and I have no idea. The last time I went there, all the series I was interested to watch were precisely the No-Streams-For-Your-Country-Kthxbye ones. So I was all "oh, bugger this" and never came back.

I agree it is stupid and makes no sense but unfortunately companies are still stuck with old models and adapting is slow. I mean just look how long it took them to allow any legal streaming. I hope things will get better for the international market in this regard, I really do.

Yeah I am not really sure what series are available worldwide on CR, I just know some are. The only one I watch on there is Natsume Yuujinchou, I am guessing from what you say that is not available to you :( (but at least there are still subs for that one.)

edit: And the idea of banning a country's IP once a series is licensed is not a bad idea. It's too bad fansubs themselves cannot control this.

Yeah, Natsume is not available on Crunchyroll in Spain DX But it's one of the cases where it's "popular" enough to still have fansubs, thankfully.

All I'm saying is that it makes no sense to me and it does nothing to wind down the horrible self-centered stereotype most people see in Americans in general. It's sad and it'll be frustrating when it affects me personally.

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I hope you don't think we are all self-centered like that. :)

I mean I won't lie I am happy to get the free streams and I am upset when I don't get them (hence my recent post about Australia getting FMA and not America) but that doesn't mean I think it is unfair to fans in other countries who are not getting this stuff. And I would never tell a fan from a different country to stop watching fansubs because the series is licensed in the US (streaming or otherwise). Although oddly enough the fans I see complaining about the lack of fansubs when something gets licensed are usually Americans.

I'd think it would be cool if only they wouldn't IP-block other countries.

Tell me about it -_-; If I read one more anti-fansub argument that ends with 'you can legally watch it online in English now, so no excuses!' then I'm going to smack my forehead into this fine wooden desk in front of me.

It's USA-centrism striking again! What do you mean you're not in America?!

But yeah... it's gotta suck even more for you guys because it is licensed for you but it'll take months to be released on R2 DVDs. If it ever gets there.

*petpettea a Perú*

Estaría genial de cojín ;;

ARRRRR MATEYS.

1. So we're not getting fansubs then? I hate this, because if you're not in America you're screwed.

2. I still hate Namco for this. Seriously, what a shitty move, especially because it looks like they planned on doing this from the start because they're hints of this new character in the game. All of this while they kept saying they wouldn't port the game and that it was exclusive of the 360. It really pisses me off.

1. Well, it's still not a spread practice yet. But. If this goes on, it can easily happen with tons of good series and that would suck like crazy.

2. Shitty doesn't quite cover it D: *hugs*

a) I wish I knew because it's retarded. b) What ads?

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming that the companies put short ads into the series they stream, or at least load the site with ads. It's the viewer's payment, like how ads on TV channels are payment.

Oh, the videos won't even load. You just see a "Sorry, the video is not available for your country" message, and that's it. So I had never thought there should/could have ads on there. Makes awful sense, but I have no way to tell if there are.

Hey. Did you see this post (http://ayasugi-san.livejournal.com/284037.html?mode=reply)? I know it's probably selfish, but I thought, since you're living in a country different from where you grew up, you might be able to help me understand a little better how the immigrant community is feeling.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
Um, not really. After all, I'm a white woman whose native language was Spanish to begin with. I've never been ridiculed, and the most I've felt is annoyance when someone replies me in Galego because it's fucking rude. I'm pretty much the equivalent of a white North American moving to Wales, racial and linguistically speaking.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there an immigrant community where you live, though? That's what I can't understand, just from a personal experience POV; how it feels for them to have been attacked by one of their own. The news reports make it sound like it was fairly close-knit, even among people from different countries, and I was wondering if you had ever been part of such a community.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I know there are some African immigrants and some Chinese immigrants besides the random Latinos. But I have no idea if in my small city there's something similar. I doubt it. *shrugs* Maybe in Madrid or Barcelona? Normally it's associations for the same country, and obviously it's tons different like that.
