Things I've learned about Atlus and me...
...after reading/watching a Let's Play of Persona 3 during a couple of slow days. Unpopular opinions 'R us!
1. I'm only willing to go through playing an ATLUS game, especially a turn-based SMT one, if and only if the plot interests me somehow.
1.1. P3's plot didn't, incidentally.
1.1.1. After finishing the LP, it still doesn't. I... I feel like I should apologize.
1.2. But hell if I'm not finishing P4 as soon as I can! I like it enough to go through it, and I'm already used to it.
1.2.1. I guess I do like crime mysteries and happier tones better. Am I weird?
2. I'm fine with blank, silent protagonists, after years of playing Zelda-like stuff.
2.1. And yet, Minato creeps me out for unknown reasons.
2.2. Souji's cool, though.
2.3. And yet, my most favorite silent protagonist ever is a *wolf*.
3. Besides plot, and in any RPG game in general, party characters are important to me. I must like at least half of them.
3.1. By the end of Tales of the Abyss, I ended up liking them all.
3.2. I love the P4 party. All of them, even. I want to have friends like them.
3.3. I was left, however, indifferent to every P3 party member. Yes, they look cool, but sorry. I couldn't click with anyone. The doggy was cute, though.
4. Nonetheless, I did have a favorite character in that mess. Someone shoot me now. /badumpsh
4.1. What on Earth does it say about me that I love Teddie in P4 and Ryoji in P3? I'm beginning to think I have some serious issues. Or that I'm now fascinated by originally dark beings who gain some humanityand then proceed to flirt around lolwhut.
4.2. No, self, you're not playing a game for a guy who's only around for a month or so. Yes, counting him as Pharos, too; it's still a month in-game.
4.2.1. Seriously, Minato, it's been a couple of days since your creepy shota imaginary friend disappeared, and there's a mystery transfer student with the same mole under his left eye. Seriously!!
5. The music in P3 is catchier than in P4. And that's saying a lot. Baby baby nananananananana.
Tomorrow I'll make a real post, I hope.

In any case, I have a lot of unpopular opinions. I dislike Yukari. I dislike Junpei. I dislike Aigis. I dislike FES, and it doesn't make any sense if you take into account the character development of some characters. I LOVE Ryoji, but I don't care about Minato and I think he's the weakest protagonist out of all the megaten games. I DON'T CARE ABOUT MINATO/RYOJI, and it's one of the most popular pairings. Or Minato/Anyone, for that matter. My favorites are Akihiko, Mitsuru, Shinjirou and Ken, and they're the only ones I actually care about at this point. I think some of the plot points are a bit weak, and in general I feel they improved everything in P4.
My favorite silent protagonist is Serph, because his personality is STRONG despite the fact you can only choose what he's gonna say about 5-6 times in BOTH games. DDS's plot is a lot more darker and more about "THE WORLD WAS FUCKED UP AND YOU NEED TO FIGHT GOD TO SAVE IT LOL HAVE FUN AND OH, YOU'RE A CANNIBAL DEMON ENJOY EATING YOUR COMRADES, BUT WAIT THAT GIRL CAN CALM YOU ALL GET HER!!1111," so I'm not pimping it at you. But maybe the battle system would be easier considering there are no personas. BUT the skill/mantra system is . . . well, different.
Either way, I can see why you didn't like it at all? Digital Devil Saga is different so you might not like it, but if you like the murder/mystery aspect of P4 maybe you should try Devil Summoner after that? I really liked it, and it's shorter by comparison. But . . . mute, since there are no voices in the game.

GOOD :D I wish I could care even a little bit about those four, since they were tons more interesting than MC and the party classmates. And yet, while I saw the potential for coolness, the game still felt flat to me when it portraits them. I don't know, maybe it's my imagination? Maybe I'm too used to P4, where not only the characters' issues were better exploited; they were the point of dungeons. But then again, I was liking characters in P4 before they faced their shadows or started their s.links. But since everyone loves at least one of those four, I guess it's not ATLUS' fault and I'm the one failing here.
(...Perhaps, and I'm realizing this right after typing the tl;dr, it's that they're all too reserved to interest me; I can like secretive/reserved people, but only if there's more to them and have charisma regardless. And right after their main issue/motivation is revealed, then they get swept by plot and it's not brought up again and I stop caring. And I don't blame them for not socializing more with Minato, that jerkass; hell, I read Mitsuru's s.link in a script and shit was so boring and dumb, she didn't deserve that.)
I don't ship in Persona except for crack, but man does Minato/Ryoji squick me to no end. It doesn't help that he's "supposedly" based physically in Minato (I don't... see them that similar? I wonder if it's the emo hair or the character designer was on crack), so it's also somehow selfcest and that's so not my kink. And they barely talk after he becomes Ryoji. They had more subtext when he was Pharos, and then it was still creepy.
I wish I could play DDS so you'd have someone to fangirl :o But it's true, I'm beginning to think that while I can like creepy, dark anime/manga, I do prefer my games to be more colorful and/or positive and/or cutesy, or that at least they have my kind of characters. So I guess... devil cannibal game can't be my thing, even if it's easier than P3 ;;
Ah, I actually have the first Devil Summoner: Raidou downloaded in my hard drive XD I just haven't been able to start it yet since I'm at mom's. I'm the reason why Di is playing the second game, actually. But yeah, detective + action RPG, seems like my style.

I think the main issue is that the game failed to show enough about them for you to care about them? I don't think it's a bad thing, but it just didn't work for you in the end. That's why I think they improved everything in P4, the characters' issues are THERE and they need to face them, and you have the opportunity to start s.links with them. It's a lot more subtle in P3, and their personas start to change after September, if I'm not mistaken? Maybe November, it's been years since last time I played it. I think the P4 group is a lot more closer and know each other better than the characters from P3, in fact! So those tiny details are important and I think that's the reason? MITSURU'S S.LINK IS A LIE. A BIG FAT LIE. Actually, most of them . . . IDK, I don't like Minato.
Yeah, exactly. It's like selfcest and I CAN'T UNDERSTAND why it's so popular. Ryoji didn't even interact much with Minato, and if anything, I could maybe buy Ryoji/Junpei (I mean, they spent A LOT OF TIME in Junpei's room doing WHATEVER THEY WERE DOING) but not Ryoji/Minato. I kinda liked Pharos/Minato at first because it was creepy, but I don't like it anymore. IDK, at this point the only thing I still ship is Akihiko/Shinjiro and Akihiko/Ken because I'm a terrible person.
Well, my daughter, Hikaru and Lynx played DDS SO IT'S OKAY. It's my favorite game, but it's definitely not for everyone. And the characters' design is different and a lot of people TEND TO HATE IT FOREVER for some reason I don't understand or say they all look the same (but really, there's a perfectly valid reason for that, so it's not like they were lazy) and I like post-apocalyptic plots. And it's better than trying Nocturne, which I never finished because it's HARD and I kept dying and dying and dying and . . . dying. Either way, you can always download it and try it? You can watch the first scenes here, because my brother is also obsessed with DDS and recorded and uploaded the whole thing. \o/
Yeah, I noticed after I posted it. xD I've only played the first game, I need to play the new one myself.

I play it for the dating sim and the grinding, but I actually enjoy leveling up way more than beating bosses or that kind of stuff. Yeah, the plot is utterly uninteresting for me. I do care about the characters, though.
think the reason I've never cared that much about RPGs is that, in video games, Civilization II is still my hallmark of perfection so, really, TUUUUUUUUUUUUUURNS. ARE. AWESOME. Plus dating sim! :P

See, grinding (in any RPG) and dating sim bull is exactly what I like the least about Persona games 8D Fighting bosses is annoying, but I find it lots more rewarding than leveling up. Or at least bosses in Persona 4: the ones in P3 look as boring as the rest of the game, too. And I don't know, most s.links in P3 aren't that interesting or even dumb main characters down (man, WTF is up with Mitsuru's).
