Mathematical!

So... honestly, I haven't updated this journal lately because I didn't have anything clever to say. I've been wasting time with TV, mostly silly cartoons, and the occasional book. So I'll try to remedy that by doing a short review of stuff I've been following.

But to make things sillier, I'll use ONE SINGLE IMAGE to convey my feelings on every show.

AnoHana (up to date)

Yeaaaah, I still don't particular care about anyone involved. Guess it's time to drop this one.

Tiger and Bunny (up to date)

TBH I'm mostly watching for Kotetsu's ossan moe and the ensemble cast. Barnaby is an asshole and I'm not into his plotline. MY PARENTS ARE DEEEEEEAD /BATMAN

Doctor Who (up to date)

Every. Single. Episode. But in a good way! :D It's the highlight of the weekends.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (11 episodes)

Not as into it as adult men on 4chan, but it's fucking adorable and my inner 5 year-old is all over this, once you get used to anime eyes on animals. My favorites are Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, but I pretty much like all of them.

Transformers Animated (5 episodes)

A lot of my friends love this fandom and RP it, so I'm giving it a chance. It's still early to say because I'm informed that it gets better later. So far, this gif conveys it pretty well. I like Broptimus and Bumblebee so far.

Adventure Time with Finn and Jake (14 episodes)

I CANNOT LOVE THIS CUTE SURREAL THING MORE THAN I DO. Really, this thing is crack and it makes me so happy for some unfathomable reason.

Well I do love Ano Hana but then hey everyone differs.

But yay for enjoying Doctor Who and Ponies.

It's hard for me to pick a favorite Pony but I lean towards Fluttershy!

Dunno why I don't particularly care, but probably it's because I can't stand Menma and and can't find the other kids likable when everyone is still so obsessed with her. And since Menma and her death IS the whole plot... well.

It's the first time I'm following a Who series as it comes out, so I don't know if my cheeriness is for chatting with friends and making jokes, or because I really enjoy Team TARDIS this season. It's not been perfect, but it's a fun ride and that's what it counts with DW.

T&B has been pretty good for something that made me go all >_< *cringey* on first episode.
Ano Hana is kind of just... there. but at least it's better than Hanasaku Iroha which I had dropped on account of regular creepiness and sudden boring plot syndrome.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I watched like three episodes on a row so I can't recall what was in what episode. I do remember I was intrigued in the reality show premise and see the Shounen Jump Idiot archetype in an adult man as a negative trait, which is why I'm a bit on the fence about having a plot now. Maybe if it wasn't deep down all about BARNABY'S PARENTS ARE DEEEEEAD I'd be digging it better, but it's still the most watchable thing this season. And I think I'm watching a different show than the fandom.

AnoHana eludes me because I suspect that if the ghost wasn't such an obnoxious moeblob and the others would be less obsessed with her, it could've been interesting. I didn't even touch Hanasaku Iroha because I'm not too much of a slice or life gal, but from what I heard I'm glad I didn't.

Also, is the lady in your icon Renee Montoya? I don't read much comics, but she was my favorite in 52 ♥
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's Renée ♥ I adore her ♥ and 52 is, like, my least favourite thing she was in!!
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even know which series she's in usually, but anything related to Batman and derivatives overwhelms me too much. I read 52 because what I'm doing right now is check anything with Rip Hunter and his relatives, but American comics still scare the crap out of me and I can't read more than 1-2 at a time.
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I was the same until I got someone under hand to rec me stuff specifically. But actually at DC Batman related stuff is like the only thing I don't feel totally lost when I read it (52 totally overwhelmed me with all the characters from other stuff).

Sadly Renée doesn't have a regular series, she's in Birds of Prey right now though.
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say that Bat-related comics are still intimidating because they're so, so, so many and their casts are huge. The amount of canon piling on is like an avalanche, too. It's tragic because I have a lot of friends who are into that subcanon but it's way too much for my magpie mind.

Thanks for reminding me of Birds of Prey! That's one I've always wanted to try but always forget to look for it. Any Renée appearance is a bonus, too.
ext_2023: (Default)

[identity profile] etrangere.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
yeah BoP is a solid series, and I didn't find it overwhelming (in terms of references, though perhaps i was just lucky and, as i said, i don't find the Batman stuff confusing myself). Though Renée has only been in the lattest issue, and I dunno how long she'll be there.

If I had one thing to rec with her it's the Gotham Central series, it's set right before 52 actually, back when she was a cop and it's about the day-to-day life of the cops in Gotham. It's sheer brilliance.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
100% AGREED WITH WHO.

I'm seriously thrilled that you're even giving TFA a chance, because I didn't think you'd be one to go for the giant robots. |D So yeah, even if you end up feeling meh about it I'LL ALWAYS KNOW WE MADE YOU TRY!

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's a bandwagon thing because I got tired of being the only one who doesn't know even one continuity, this missing all the jokes and soaps? In any case, if it was for the CR with Leo I should've watched G1/BW/Armada, which is the most likely he could've watched. But I think that's too cheesy-retro even for me XD

In any case, I'm not hating it so far, so who knows.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I SWEAR I'M NOT TRYING TO MAKE YOU WATCH MORE STUFF, but I think Beast Wars is the best written of them all. Sure, the CGI is baaaaad by modern standards and the music is so... '90s, but the plot and character development are great, and it was a pretty groundbreaking show for its time. It's not cheesy-retro the way G1 is. (And I never saw Armada but I heard stuff that... yeeeeah. Not for me, that one.)

Anyway, I do think TFA is the one you have most chances of liking. Especially once they really get rolling with the nerdy references and stuff.

Beast Wars never really called my attention, not even when it was on TV. I'm sure it's pretty good, but I can't get over robot animals. To be perfectly honest, I'm trying with TFA because a) Di also told me that, and b) that cast is so cute.

I am sure that Leo must remember Beast Wars better than G1. Plus, unlike me, he'd be allll over robot animals XD I have to work with a limited timeframe because he couldn't have watched anything on TV after his 8 years. Something as recent as the TFA reboot is out of the question.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
... I could explain the robot animals but. I refuse to be one of those nerds. XD (As in, I want to be the fun kind of nerd, not the annoying kind :P)

Yup, for Leo TFA is probably out of the question - it's from 2007. But I think your "I sort of recognize you from G1" thing works for the Autobots.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found that for different geeks, different combinations of "Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot" work or not XD

I have no idea what year is Percy Jackson supposed to begin, but with the mentions to iPods and internet it has to be in the 2000's. If we take book 1's publishing date as the first year of the story, then on 2005 Percy is 12, and TLO/TLH happen on 2009. Yeah, I don't think so. Leo would be a 1994 baby by that logic, and while it's too late for G1 there are reruns and his mom could've been a geek. He was in good time to watch BW.

...sorry about that, I was trying to get my headcanon straight?

AGREEING SO MUCH WITH DOCTOR WHO. Getting massively mindfucked is the highlight of my week.

This is also the first time I'm watching a series as it's broadcasted on TV, so it's lots of fun to look forward to Saturdays! And for the mindfuck and sadness, there's also a lot of fluff and silliness. I dig the balance.

So damn cute.

[identity profile] openxthexbox.livejournal.com 2011-05-20 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as much as I would really like to know what exactly is going on, alot of it's so silly that I don't care so much. It's a fun ride.

It really is.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
MLP: Finally caved and watched all of it recently. It's cute and smile-inducing, but I was hoping for more of a Magical Girl-style show. Also, moar Zecora plz. And Celestia and Luna and everyone else, but especially more Zecora.

TFA: Yeah, it definitely gets better. The season premieres and finales are among the best episodes, so besides the opening three-parter, you have a ways to go for guaranteed awesome with minimal YMMV. Love that you love Bee; he's the hot-head I want to either smack sense into or be reckless with depending on my mood.

DW: Moffat, please stop killing Rory.

[identity profile] pindrops.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think the killing Rory thing has become a joke, to the point it's like Kenny on South Park. The good news is that it would mean he gets to survive the season.

The other theory is that, due to the fact that he was erased from existence, the universe is stil a bit confused so it kills him, remembers he should be alive and then brings him back
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Default)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've stumbled into at least three or four South Park fanarts on Tumblr XD And at least a couple of "Rory died, it must be Saturday" jokes.

Laurus showed me that theory some days ago, and I was about to link her to it. I think it makes awful sense, to the point I'd be a little disappointed if it gets jossed.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found a South Park reference made by Murray Gold, the composer for the show. Does that officially make Rory DW's Kenny?

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The pilot is pretty misleading. After all that, you'd at least imagine there would be more literal references to their qualities or Twilight's Sailor Moon-ish (no pun intended) fleeting moment, or something. I don't mind the slice of life turn, but something does bother me. No one mentions that day anymore, uses that kind of power to beat baddies, and I haven't seen Luna mentioned or doing a cameo so far. As problematic as Zecora not living in Ponyville might be, at least she appeared again and for some reason the lack of good!Luna annoys me lots more. Maybe it's me finding the sun-moon mythos intriguing or something.

I really like annoying characters with silly sense of humor, so Bumblebee is cute and obnoxious at the same time. Personally I'm more surprised I dig Optimus while I expected to like Bee from what I heard.

Laurus showed me the theory [livejournal.com profile] pindrops mentions and it's here (http://doctorwho.livejournal.com/7578966.html). It makes a lot of sense and explains Schrodinger's Fetus too. And personally, the fact he gets killed and revived all the time kind of tells to me that they're not doing it for real this season.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I read about the background of the show, the episodic slice-of-life stuff is the result of executive meddling; the execs didn't want a story arc and wanted the episodes to be viewed in any order. Word of God is that Luna will return in Season 2 (and we'll find out more about what turned her into Nightmare Moon); maybe the show will also become more magical girl-esque next season.

The bad thing about liking TFA!Optimus so much is that I end up not liking other incarnations as much because they don't have the qualities I find so appealing. I like Optimus as in-over-his-head fish-out-of-water Team Dad!

the fact he gets killed and revived all the time kind of tells to me that they're not doing it for real this season.

That's what I thought at first ("stop killing Rory" is more about trying to pretend that it's really for realz this time when it happens every episode and never sticks), but then I thought, what if they're turning Rory dying into a joke so that it'll catch us off-guard when he actually does die for good?
