Noooo, no my English teacups!

Note to self: when reading shoujo manga/manhwa, and you find yourself thinking that all the potential love interests are creepy assholes who irritate you, especially the one the main character obviously ends up falling for? Just... forget that shit and move on. It most definitely will get more annoying with time, unless it's explicitly a comedy.

I'm so picky for shoujo and shounen, really.

Also, is there more good non-conventional shoujo where a heroine (or hero, if shounen-ai) with a strong will and personality doesn't turn to a weepy "omg mah wub is everything!1!" idiot as soon as she hooks up with the guy (or girl, if yuri), and keeps most of her original traits? Any recs, guys?

Okay, so there's a flash demo for The Edgeworth and Gumshoe Show Ace Attorney Investigations. So far it's not as funny as the Defense games (needs even moar sarcasm, Edgey) but then again it's only the first few minutes of the game we have here. The gameplay looks cool and challenging, though. I doubt I'll buy this but I will play the shit out of its ROM.

Speaking of things this game needs moar: Ema Skye. I was looking at some official art.
- Age and height. 18 years old, 154cm. Girl, no wonder you're using those heels as an adult |D You grew well so fine, but didn't really grow up that high.
- Sketches. Behold hair down and no hat and long trousers, and ponytail in some other. So pretty!

REC! Ooku, Fumi Yoshinaga. But dam, that one is hard to find. It's like the Holy Grial to me. TELL ME IF YOU FIND IT. XD But then, you can read everything that is not BL by her, she won a Gender Awareness award for Ooku.

Anyway, there is a lot of things, I think you have watched 12 Kingdoms, right? And... I will come back for more later because my brain isn't working. XD

Isn't that the one where Japanese society is ruled by females, and the shogun has a harem of guys? I've heard about it! I also tried to hunt it a while ago with no avail, though :(

Yeah, I loved Twelve Kingdoms ♥ But that one's not a shoujo and no one has canon love interests (kirin-monarch subtext apart). I'm hoping concretely for recs of non-only-school-themed shoujo where main romantic pairings didn't suck or the members of the couple aren't lobotomized by love. But genderbending or playing with gender roles would be pretty cool.

[identity profile] la-vie-noire.livejournal.com 2009-11-14 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
YEAH, that's the one! Shut. :(

Aaaah, well, yeah, there is After School Nightmare who really talks about gender roles. There is, of course, Utena! XD Hmmm, I haven't read a lot, but she has. XD You can check her Josei tag too.

Good non-conventional shoujo: After School Nightmare (although it's probably the MOST nonconventional shoujo I've ever read and it will fuck with your brain. Majorly.) The main female character (well, both of them) can be kind of annoying and selfish, but they both grow out of it eventually. ANYWAY. I CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS HIGHLY ENOUGH.
... aaaaaand I've heard that Skip Beat is good but I'm too lazy to catch up on it. /shot

I read some volumes of ASN when a friend of mine scanned them somewhere. The plot is really good and it hooks you, but actually? The characters weren't of my taste, and I disliked both the pigtailed girl and the dark-haired guy who had the hots for Main Character. So... um.

Skip Beat I haven't read because it's not really my kind of shoujo and starts horribly (too real world, asshole guy, set on revenge). I tend to dig fantasy or urban fantasy settings better.

Ashita no Ou is fantastic, but not available outside of Japan unless you read scanlations. (It's up on Onemanga if you do, and I highly recommend it!)

Uuuuuuuuh, it's josei. It's a pretty neat genre, yes, but I haven't gotten into even the ones everyone loves, such as Nodame Canterbille or Honey and Clover which sound sort of similar to this one. I'm still too green for such slice-of-life realistic settings, I guess. Thanks anyway!

Oh whurps. I forgot about that. I read too much stuff in too many genres, I think. 8D;;;;

I'm not that much of an Edgeworth fan and I'm liking it. As long as it's mostly like his hilarious, deadpan, inner monologues in PW3, that is.

Have you tried Otomen? The main character is a guy and the whole thing is mainly lulz with no srs bsnss on sight. Koukou Debut is a bit more srs, but I liked the main girl and guy through the whole thing.

If you want an oldy, Mint na Bokura is still my favourite Yoshizumi Wataru work. It's got crossdressing, which makes anything better by default. Also with crossdressing there's HanaKimi (if you haven't read that one), though it's a bit too long and may get frustrating. Though that one has canon gayness and it's awesomesauce.

And I always say I love Gakuen Alice more than pie (can't remember if you've tried this one), it's like Harry Potter meets X-Men meets Kodomo no Omocha... it may be a bit hard to find though.

Otomen is great! I wish the girl would get as much spotlight as the guys because she feels a bit shallow sometimes, but Asuka is adorable. Hanakimi I liked a lot even though it lost steam as it went on and the ending was a bit weak to me. I'll check if I can find the rest!

Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden is superior to the original story in EVERY way. Takiko, the main character, kicks SERIOUS ASS. She doesn't take shit, she knows how to fight, and DOES. She falls for the obvious love interest, but they're smart enough to say "world crisis and destiny first, love after." SO AWESOME.

Have you read Skip Beat? It is amazing. *_* Girl gets into showbiz ostensibly to get revenge on her asshole ex, but along the way discovers that she actually has - *gasp* - interests and passions of her own! The whole thing is basically a big fuck-you to the "my love is everythingggg" trope. Also, there is yuri subtext.

Like I mentioned above when someone recced it before, it... doesn't seem like the kind of shoujo I enjoy to read. I like more escapism or quirky.

Can't read Ooku, sob. It's not licensed here and there are no scanlations.
