Will I sound like a wanky fanbrat?

Ya know, I've been checking FMA raw scans for layout purposes, and I'll tell you something:

I MISS LING SO MUCH WHILE READING ;_____;

I kind of felt guilty for not missing him for the last months, because the plot is just getting so interesting up north. Maybe my other fandoms and my love for not-so-recurrent characters conditioned me for that. I don't really suffer for the lack of my favorite characters if the story is pretty good; now, if things do get boring, then I resort to remember the good times I had, and that makes me nostalgic/wanky about the character(s) I love who won't show up. But FMA is so awesome and I like the main players so much, I seldom miss the minor guys (although I'm so glad when they reappear, it's pretty cool). This is why I never understood why so many fans whine because Ed/Roy/Havoc/Envy/Mobuta/whoever isn't in that month's chapter to bring sexy back, therefore the chapter sucks ass. Pleeeeeeease.

This is why it came as a surprise to feel Ling's absence so strong by rereading. I had almost forgotten why I loved him and the Ling-tachi so much. Sigh.

01. Default

Nakuru and Spinel from CCS. No idea why I'm still with it right now because it's been a while. I find them so adorable, and besides it's Eriol-tachi represent! Woot!

02. Oldest

Hahaha, Ling. Well, now I think it's kind of ugly-plain, but I save it because I used to use it a lot and people relate me to that icon in some level.

03. Newest

Newest made by me

Ginko from Mushishi. It was really hard to choose one from that batch.

Newest in general

Ushiwaka from Okami. Yes, I know I already had two icons from that game. Shut up.

04. Saddest

A tie. No one should make Mokona Soel Modoki OR Tamaki Suoh cry. It's like kicking puppies, literally.

05. Happiest

XXXHOLiC brings the happy-go-lucky icons

06. Angriest

Wow, old Kurogane used to be so grumpy. But kitty!Watanuki wins at aggressiveness.

07. Cutest

Okay sorry, I have so much cute I can't choose one. And there's even more than those!

08. Sexiest

...in a hawtdamnisthisonpurpose? obvious sense, at least. There's a lot of icons *I* find sexy but lacking what most people would go to their bunk for.

09. Funniest

These ones are funny if you know the scenes they came from:

Actually, I have made a lot of icons people consider funny, but I only have the obscure jokes uploaded. Oops?

10. Favorite 'ship

They're not really my most active ships, but the shipping icons I have I find cutest. First one is Howl/Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle -I chose a scene in which they looked almost book!IC; the other is Ayame/Mine from Fruits Basket because they're so batshit and they're one of my few OTPs who actually do kiss and say cheesy stuff and have their kinks all over the place... in CANON.

11. Favorite Fandom

I'm going to skip this one because it depends on my mood... Although the manga I've obsessed the most ever is XXXHOLiC. I just can't bring to choose one icon of it.

12. Most Used

Uuuuuuh, I have no idea? You guys tell me XD

13. Favorite That I Made

From the ones I have uploaded I limited myself to four, which isn't that bad considering it's: one for manga coloring, one for anime, one for color illustration, and one for this-is-random-and-not-animanga. Also, they're current favorites, so I might change my mind tomorrow.

14. Favorite at the Moment

It's not outstanding or anything, but I really like the unusual cropping and Waka's calm expression.

15. Favorite Overall

Oh come on. Like I wouldn't put Clow in the meme.

16. Do your icons make a statement about you?

Yeah, because I only make and use icons of stuff I really love or find amusing. Of course, that's weird enough because my taste in general is unusual when it comes to characters and pairings. I'm not the kind of person whose icons (recollected or made) are for images she just found them gorgeous. Which is odd, considering CLAMP iconists in general tend to make icons of illustrations they find pretty no matter what characters are in them (then again, I could be wrong and they all might love Sakura/Kotori/Chii/Kobato? sorry for the prejudice, it's just the vibe I get from my fandom). I make icons I feel passionate about, and since I'm more about minor characters with only two or three images, or fandoms nobody icons for, I rarely use the trendy images and characters, sometimes even avoiding them.

Eek, I'm reaching tl;dr. So I'll just add something else: I also like to show my humor in icons. Yeah, it's fun to make pweeeeeetty icons and play with resources, but sometimes I just want to bring the funny -without sacrificing the visuals. It's hard to make nice-looking icons that are hilarious or amusing at the same time. The best fandom icons tend to be so serious! So I try to spice things up a bit with teh funneh or bad Internet memes. I'm nto sure if I'm accomplishing it, though.

17. Of which fandom do you have the most icons?

CLAMP and Fullmetal Alchemist. If I didn't put some order, One Piece, Slayers, Avatar, and Okami would also try to take over.

18. Of which 'ship do you have the most icons?

Er, I try not to repeat ship icons. I've had two Clow!Touya/Yukito icons at the same time once, so I guess that counts.

19. How do you categorize your icons?

The ones I made? They're filed by fandom. That way it's easier to have them organized at the mercury-retrograde.net archive. The ones I snagged? Chaotic unique folders throughout my storage devices everywhere.

20. Are your icons made mostly by other users?

I say 60% mine, 40% other people's.

21. Do you make icons?

[livejournal.com profile] icondork~~~~ ♣

22. Are they any good?

Well, it depends of who you ask. I'm not an icon guru, most people won't recognize my username, I'm not in the spotlight, my icons do pale in comparison with the iconmaking BNFs' styles. But I think I've gotten better. I think they could be worse -they used to be!-, I'm original enough without doing total obscure-esque stuff, and I'm hanging on just fine. Although sometimes I wonder how many people who watch [livejournal.com profile] icondork are there for my icons and how many for Estefanía's. Still, I can't help but feeling insecure... I'll probably tell you my icons suck hard if I'm in a bad day.

23. Animated icons are...

...good if they have a purpose. I hated the trend in which the animation consisted of flashy/shiny parts or random sakura petals over the subject. I was SO glad when it died down. Now, I use and like animation when the icons are done in a humorist purpose. Those are pretty cool. Another use I find good is when the text is too long, which is a technique I've seen a lot on [livejournal.com profile] hamsterfactor's. But when the animation is just to show off you can animate and/or leave people epileptic, I roll my eyes.

24. In general, I think icons...

Are one of the reasons LJ is so popular. The fact we can choose from more than one userpic is made of win. About iconmaking, I think it's as valid as any other fandom activity of expression. Therefore, it is important and relevant, but when it reaches the levels of "it's serious business!!!1!" it's not so fun anymore. Unless you point and laugh at those things, that is.

I love your Nakuru and Spinel icon and your grumpy Kuro. Nakuru doesn't get enough love (understandably I suppose because of her attempted "home-wrecking"). Kurogane looks adorable there. I'm still pissed off with him though. Looking at his cute grumpy face makes me feel the pissed-offness wearing off...

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
....home-wrecking? I don't know, man, I disagree with that. She just tried to compete for a guy she found hot, and at that time T/Y still weren't officially an item. Besides, as soon as Touya gave Yue his power, she gave up on him -still resented, but she did give up- and attempted to become his and Yukito's friend. She even shared her bento with Yuki, so I'm sure they got along as soon as Touya's love/magic as a sort of trophy wasn't in the way. It was more of a little crush joint with sportsmanship, not an attempt to destroy Teh Ghey like some T/Y fans want to believe.

Besides, Yukito actually gets more hate from fandom than Nakuru.

The Kurogane icon isn't mine, but I know what you mean. If the old Kurogane had to put up with half of what he went through in the last two worlds, he'd be doing more than just punching an emo wizard's head. It shows how he grew attached to them, but I still have respect for him for being the sanest one of the main characters.

Ahh I know, that why I put in inverted commas. I find it funny/silly the way some people accuse fictional charaters of home wrecking. I'm just trying to make sense of the lack of Nakuru fans.

Wha? People hate Yukito? Bloody weirdos, I love him.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I kind of didn't read the quotes and thought you were serious ^^U

Not only I've seen Yukito bashers, but also them labeling him as a Mary Sue. It's really surreal.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the stupid flashy animations as well for the most part, and the sakura petals are my least favorite. They don't ever manage to not look pastede on yay.

...Yeah I generally only icon characters I really like as well. I think the 'icon what image is pretty' is a fandom universal practice. I see it everywhere.

I actually asked an icon maker friend of mine (no one you have friended) why she continued to make icons of a character she strongly dislikes and even use them (to make them is kind of odd, but to use icons of a char you dislike is even odder to me), and she just told me 'well... the image was pretty.' I guess, but I am generally not going to make icons of a character I don't love, let alone use them.

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I fail to see how people thought the sakura petals were any cute. It SO was pastede on yay, you nailed it.

I know it's an universal thing, but the only big fandom I icon frequently is CLAMP so my experience is limited to that one. Hell, I've seen cases in which people icon a random image without knowing the series or the character at all, or confuse them with another one. Does that also happen with Rumiko icons?

.......See, I really can't get that at all. Sure at the iconing characters you don't like, because an icontest forced you to make an image challenge or you just want to be popular so you do popular subjects. But USING them? God, why? It's true sometimes the characters you love don't have enough pretty art, but I think that's a waste of icon slots.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen the 'iconing a character I don't know' thing mostly in the CLAMP fandom. Maybe Yu Watase and Arina Tanemura art as well. Generally that distinction goes to any artist whose stuff is just considered extremely pretty. I've seen it happen a couple times in Rumic fandom (this one time about a year ago this girl posted an entire batch of 'Kikyou' icons and they were all Mana from "Mermaid Saga), but not too often.

I don't get it either! I've done it for icontests if they're really low on entries, or when I'm asking for requests or as part of like a themed set. However, no 'Gee this image is pretty. Even though I dislike the character, I'm going to use it.' I agree it's a waste.

Besides, sometimes when I participate in friending memes or check some person's profile for the heck of it, I go see what characters they have in their icons. So really, if I were to friend someone because of the impression I got from their profile and icons, and they bashed a character I thought they loved, I'd be extremely weirded out (and honestly, even feeling a bit betrayed)

Word. I don't why iconmaking gets such extreme opinions sometimes - you have the elitist Arteeeeests who hate everyone that uses crop&border icons, or you have the people who think iconmaking is stupid. Um, no. It's no more stupid or geeky than fanfic, fanart, RPG or whatever.

ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Yuuko / lol internet)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But see, that alone is just a proof it IS another fandom expression. Because there's similar wank for fanfic (it's illegal! it's soulless! it's bad written! it's all porn!) and fanart (I can use Japanese fanarts in graphics if I want to! it's ugly! it's all porn!) and RP (if your characters don't interact with mine you hate me! it's all OOC and crack! it's bad written! it's all porn!).

...really, the only difference is the small amount of porn. And yet, with the doujinshi/fanart-based and the seme-uke-buttsex jokes, I'm not quite sure about that.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 12:02 am (UTC)(link)

Ahaha, good point! XD

Really, I don't know what's up with the iconmaking hate. I know there are some annoying elitists out there, but those exist in every fandom activity.

Now that you mention it, Ling hasn't shown up in forever... booo. D: But I'm so absorbed in the story that it doesn't really matter, haha.

I think crying Mokona is sadder than crying Tamaki.
ext_387179: A sea turtle swimming (Gwendolyn / the valkyrie's flight)

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what happens with me. My favorite character is Ling, but the plot is so good I can wait for him to come back without missing him much.

It's sadder because Mokona cries less than Tamaki. And Tamaki cries for stuff he shouldn't while he doesn't for stuff he should.

[identity profile] adventures.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, old Kuro is a little different than he is now isn't he? Everyone is...which would be why I stopped reading Tsubasa.

Your icons are so awesome, as I already told you. I like the "Slow Dawn" and the wizard one. XD

[identity profile] rainmage.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I wonder why I still read Tsubasa. Then I remember I do want to know what'll happen to Kurogane and the Mokonas at the end, and the links with Watanuki, and WTF Clow Reed and Yuuko got into. Still, Kuro's change didn't involve emotardness.

Oh, thanks ^^ But I have more than one wizard in my icons *gets shot*

No, I don't blame you for missing Ling. The other day I was going through scans of Volume 12 and 13 for my MMV and it made me realize just how long we haven't seen him. ;__; I'm loving the story right now too, but...it feels like it's been ages since he and Ed were stuck in Gluttony and eating shoes. D:

Well, at least when we DO finally see him again, we can all explode in happiness.
