taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Crossover / oh so obscure)
Interesting crossovers to do with Howl's Moving Castle:

- Sullivan from Monsters, inc. I blame [livejournal.com profile] fujurpreux. It's all about entering the wrong doors.

- Fujimoto from Ponyo on the Cliff. They were ttly interdimensional BFF before this guy moved out to the sea in disgust to his own species.

- Just Discworld. You know Howl can also move through L-space. Let's argue with the Librarian and fellow coward Rincewind!

Because, as a fictional character whose name I don't want to remember said, how can you learn without asking?

1. This one is for the graphic gurus. How do you prepare HQ color images, like manga illustrations or photos? I don't mean in icons, but for bigger graphics like layouts or banners. No matter what I do, it tends to look all grainy and ugly, and when I try to use smudge or blur it ends up ugly.

What's the secret? Because I've been having this problem for years. And quite frankly, I'm tired of all the failed attempts without even knowing if I'm using adequate techniques or just wasting my time.

2. Do you guys know of any gallery with good Spirited Away images? Screencaps or official art, any of them.

3. This is for people living in Spain: Cut for the other folks )
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Kero-chan / Addiction)
So, what have I been doing this Holy Week break? Well, I played some Zelda yesterday, and now I finally have the Master Sword (shut up, I'm slow and lazy)

But also, I've been downloading movies I was meaning to watch for some time, be it because I never watched the whole thing on my childhood, or because I keep hearing about it. So it was:

  • Labyrinth (yeah, the one with David Bowie; my inner child approved, and now I have CCS plotbunnies, goddamit)

  • Dogma (which was amusing, kinda like Good Omens but more serious and with prettier people)

  • Clerks (since I was already checking Kevin Smith movies... *shrugs*)

  • Kiki's Delivery Service (so adorable! it was odd how I could relate with Kiki in some aspects, and the fact that city looked like a nicer version of Coruña didn't help. where can I find a cute nerd like Tombo to flirt with me? or my own Jiji? :3)

  • Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind (because I want to watch as many GHIBLI movies as I can; I adored this one, old school Miyazawa is surely amazing)

Now for some meta, and I'll go to bed.

You know, when it comes to mythology and we talk about winged lions, there are only three things to come to mind. One is the lamassu, the Asirian creature who's a winged lion with a man's head. The second is the griffin, half an eagle and half a lion. Nonetheless, those two monsters are very different to Clow's very own Cerberus. So far, what I've seen as most similar is St. Mark's evangelist symbol, which is pretty much a lion with angel wings (and St. Matthew's fits Yue, kind of). I was forced to learn the Evangelists when I was in elementary school (lol nuns), you see.

But today I was googling aroung to see if I could find something interesting about winged lions, and I stumbled with St. Mark's Clowcktower or Torre Dell'orologio in Venice. Pictures and descriptions of that place set me aback.
The outermost displays the number 1 to 24 in Roman numerals, and a hand embellished with a depiction of the sun indicated the hour. The second dial depicts the twelve signs of the zodiac, picked out, like the inner dials, in gilt on an enamel blue background. The inner dials indicate the phases of the moon and sun.

...For something so Catholic, it gives me too many vibes about a fictional Chinese-English man who most probably didn't believe in this god. Oh CLAMP. Like British crown jewelry wasn't enough, now you have to bring Venice! Someone write Clow in Venice and writing down ideas right now.

And the worse part of the tower is, of course, the lion statue. With starry background. Yessss. And it's not the only winged lion in Venice, mind you.

And to wrap it up, the WTF link of the day, just for this paragraph:
The winged lion is a symbol of peace.
The lion with an open book is a symbol of peace,
with its book closed is a symbol of war.

...*facepalm*

Okay then. Operative Systems practice? Uploaded. OO Programming exercises? Uploaded. The deadline was until tomorrow, so for the first time or whatever I'm delivering something a DAY before. Go me or something.

I found the fourth book of Earthsea by chance, and I bought it even though I still haven't gotten the third one. And while I'm only by chapter two, I already know Ghibli screwed the books' timeline. WTF is Therru doing in that movie?

By the way, I went for a walk at the mini-mall near home today, because I like to peek at the pet shop. And the shop next to it is a decoration one. And there was this stand that -I SWEAR TO GOD- looked like my Card Captor Sakura mangas puked on it. There were these rustic Teddy bears made of regular fabric, the ones that look like they're hand-made by an aunt of yours but you know, in your heart, they were manufactured in [insert Asian country]. But see, these bears? They were THE CCS BEARS. They looked so similar it's eerie. There was one that was coffee-and-milk-colored and I was all like "Li made this one lololol" (yeah, it's darker than that, but humor me)

To make it better: The shelf right below the rustic bears? You know what it had? You know?!

SHEEP PLUSHIES. Assorted sizes. OMFGYAYHGHJSGKGKGS.

I had to leave before I went all "fly, my pretties!", and threw the whole lot at people. I think I'm honesty fucked from the head just to consider the idea.

ETA: this is kind of addequate, because today at OS the professor was talking about passwords, and how his account in the university in Santiago de Compostela was abused by some student who guessed his password -which happened to be, of course, professor's very own first name.

Meanwhile, and since I'm sort of grounded I have limited Internet this morning, I'll leave you with some silly Ghibli-related self-meta from my last post.

I hope they (Ghibli) keep the otak (in Gedo Senki) and sell cute plushies of it.
(about the furry mascot animal in the "A Wizard of Earthsea" book)

Haku: making fangirls feel zoophilic AND pedophilic since 2001
(about Spirited Away's main male character)

Man, I miss the Wales subplot! I think that's the real reason movie!Howl never dyed his hair again. He buys his L'Oreal "dye potions" at a drugstore in Wales. And he can't go there anymore and be blond again because Ghibli substituted his Welsh black dimensional door of doom with a stupid battlefield.

He turns into a bird and attacks around so he can go through that crap and find his L'Oreal the real door back home because he's worth it.

ETA:

Since holidays are close, and LJ increased the icon number for free users. Iconmaking meme. Comment and I'll make you an icon out of your interest list. I get to choose the subject I'll use, though. Please, let me know if the icon can be shared with others in my iconjournal or if you want to be selfish.

Man, a stupid unit in class reminded me of fandoms. We saw today something called greedy algorhythms.

For the love of... *headdesks* Fate, stop rubbing it in!

Interestingly enough, the original name was translated in Spanish as "algoritmos voraces" (voracious algorhythms). Which reminds me, of course, of Gluttony.

Homunculi? Stop showing up everywhere, please.

And now for something different.

I just saw on my flist that Studio Ghibli is adapting yet another fantasy book into a movie. The name of the movie? Gedo Senki: Tales of Earthsea.

...yeah, Miyazaki's son is adapting Earthsea to anime. Which is awesome and scary at the same time. Awesome because it's going to be first-class eyecandy. Scary because they butchered HMC so much. That, and the fact Ged seems... *squints at pre-production poster* you know, too white. Again. Or maybe he's Asian? Adapters can't get his skin right, can they?
