happy new year! ♥

I'll break the deredere to say thank you, for being around. I know I'm a lousy friend, but this was a shitty year and without you guys or fandom, it would've been even more sucktacular. You make me feel less lonelier, so gracias.

Now let's try to recap this past year a bit. This is completely subjective, of course.

taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Katamari / ask me how I roll)

So this entry isn't pointless, and I don't have to pretend I've been a good LJfriend lately (so getting a coal these holidays), how about some reviews?

  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, also known as the lovechild of The Jungle Book and Tim Burton's filmography. It was fine, some stories more interesting than others (my favorite was the Danse Macabre one), but the ending chapters felt sort of rushed to me. Then again, all Gaiman novels do feel like that to me, somehow. They start well, and then I go "...so, that's it?" at the ending.

  • The Princess and the Frog. Cute! I was expecting to love it more after reading the spoilers and seeing how hard Disney was trying to make it different. I did like it, and Tiana/Naveen is hot and refreshing, but it all happened too fast for me and couldn't get attached. Maybe my memories of the golden age of Disney were too hyped and this is why I wasn't 100% satisfied? Or was it the lack of charisma in the animal sidekicks? But anyway, it's a fine first return to 2D!

  • Sword of the Stranger. I can only explain this by saying gorey samurai flick + Seirei no Moribito + Rurouni Kenshin + a puppy. It was fun! Kinda cliché much, and Nanashi is like the sexy lovechild of Kenshin Himura and Balsa who's failing to cosplay the dude from Blade of the Immortal, but the characters are cool and well-rounded for a movie -except for the crazy blond rival guy, he wasn't developed at all. I can tell you I would totally watch a show about the happy adventures of Kotaro and his two cute pets, Tobimaru and Nanashi. Or at least light novels or manga based on it. Come on, Japan, make it happen!

  • Summer Wars. Found a Korean fansub and an English sub file. Anyway, this movie's about TEH INTERWEBZ AND BREAKING THEM, you guys. Therefore, it's epic. (Also about family, but mostly, Internet being trolled) ExpandMore not completely spoilerish details here ) Without entering in the real life details of the plot, this movie is all over the place and the cast is huge. But it's so satisfying and epic. Plus, it makes you wondering about the issues of newest technologies being so involved in everything. So go watch it when there are good English subs, because it's pretty cool.

taotrooper: Plastic toy aliens stare at you in wonder (LOL aliens!)
If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Thanks, guys ♥ I'd be more insane today if I hadn't people to talk to.

My God, finally my brother's Math exam is over, meaning I have something more similar to a vacation going on. I haven't even been on the Internet that much this week. Or at least not at LJ. I'm really sorry I didn't reply to oldish comments; I felt kind of embarrassed because I'm a shy asshole or something :(

I'm still stuck at my mom's, though. I REALLY WANT TO PLAY MY PS2 VIDEO GAMES BAWW. And we have to go shopping on Saturday because I need a fucking dress I'll only wear once. I hate that crap.

And my mom got Wii Fit because she's a bit fat, and my brother is whining about going on a diet, and I could use to lose three extra kilos and whatever. I did some "training" during 20 minutes and it was so boring and the board voice so annoying and... Apparently I have "good balance", which I say it's bullshit because I keep stumbling over people in public transportation pffft.

And so it's not all RL without resorting to pending memes to do. Dude, there's already merchandising with Ling Yao in the making. Maaaaan, how neat. Come to think of it, even if Ling is my favorite FMA character, the last chapters were so kickass I didn't even miss him. Now I see that (most likely ugly) SD gashapon and feel nostalgic.

ETA: the new Suzumiya Haruhi opening is really shiny and pop-art-ish and I like it enough to want to icon it *_*
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Katamari / ask me how I roll)
Aaaaagh, just end already, week! Now I got my period, not faaaair.

1. I do wonder about the trend with American (and Japanese) anime companies streaming series online. Because, you know, I'd think it would be cool if only they wouldn't IP-block other countries. Then, unless it's a monstrously popular thing, you won't see underground/secret fansubs around. So anyone outside North America is pretty much screwed and left to wait for native fansubs which are lot slower.

2. Oh crap, the scan about the Namco Tales news wasn't fake?! D: D: D: I-I'm still getting the 360 ToV version, bitches. I've said it in several places already, but retconning a story to add a new character and new relationships just reeks of possible Gruyère-like plotholes. Just look at the current CLAMP mangas for an example.

3. In more relevant-to-my-interests novelties, yet another ToA manga spinoff called Tales of the Abyss: Tsuioku no Jade, which I'll hopefully call "Can It Be Keterburg Teims Nao?". Huh. And the writer is one who wrote the game script. The strangest thing, however, is the fact that it's going to be published in Asuka. Does anyone scan the whole magazine, btw? Also, how long will it be, Gaiden-length one-shot or what? It's really odd, but Sunrise's homepage mentions Nebilim so obviously I want to see this like burning. (Is this a sample of the mangaka, however? It looks like an average fanart, bleh)

4. Speaking of manga spinoffs based on videogame, here's manga based on a videogame spinoff (pffft). Gyakuten Kenji. More Edgeworth, yawn hurray. *waves the tiniest flag* I want to play this game, but this manga doesn't seem that interesting or fun. And a Gyakuten Saiban 4 official manga for when, CAPCOM? Sob, I'll settle with one chapter, even. (Gumshoe's faces are priceless, though!)

ETA: Nyanko plushie *_*
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Ginko / Run the slow dawn awake)
You know that kind of days when stuff (and others) keep getting in the way of everything? You crouch and then bump on your forehead with the corner of a furniture piece (it still hurts, btw). There are long queues for every bus you take, and they take more time to get to the stop -also, it's freezing. There's people on the snack bending machine when normally there isn't. A chair is in the middle of the library hallway and you gotta take a detour. The cleaning ladies are in the restroom just when you're going inside. There's a higher rate of people crossing or stopping in front of you while you walk. And when you finally get home, the front door of the building won't open on the first try. Add some mental clumsiness in general.

The day cockblocked me. Seriously.

Happier things. How about things I've checked out recently?

Michiko to Hatchin: Actually, I thought the three episodes they had been released were good, old-school fun. The action scenes are entertaining, just like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo's (making the comparison on purpose because it's the same creator/studio or something). The location and character design are much refreshing, but then again remember I'm Caribbean South American and might be biased (go figure). But yeah, it's fun to watch. Don't expect a lot of sense, I mean, remember Cowboy Bebop before it got sort of a plot? Hell, MtH has MORE plot than Bebop. More or less like Champloo, I suppose. Also, kickass ladies, which is a huge plus.

I can't get over the fact Michiko's last name is Malandro, however XDDDD *knows maybe no one will get it* I know, in Brazilian it means something different, but the Venezuelan seems... sort of adequate.

To explain the next two series: Lack of XXXHOLiC and no more chapters/episodes of supernatural manganime I dig in my system. Desperate measures to fill the gap with random "kid who can see youkai" manga. (Is it January yet? I want moar Natsume)

Nurarihyon no Mago: Saw it on the small fandoms comm and gave it a try. Actually, it's also a shounen. Not bad, yet nothing spectacular. The main character, cliché as he can be, is cute as a button and sort of hot in his am-I-suddenly-reading-DNAngel night form; however, I was more interested in the very minor characters themselves, especially the youkai (Yuki-onna is adorable). I guess it's okay to pass the time, but nothing impressive so far. The grandpa should have more screentime. Also, karasu tengu so cute~

Hyakkiyakou Shou: Oh, I like the art style, it's different and more realistic. So far I've read only two volumes but the stories are pretty good, more tending to horror than fluffy slice of life. I must say, to be honest, that the only big flaw I find is that the main character, Ritsu, is feeling dull to me. He just helps because is there, he lacks personality and motivation. However, when it comes to characters, Blue Spirit is cool. The grandpa should have more flashback screentime. Also, karasu tengu so cute~

Oh wow

Guys, guys, I just found out. Guess what anime series is licensed here in Spain.

Seirei no Moribito

SERIOUSLY, adahdhagd.

Nnnnng, I shouldn't buuuuuuy it. I really shouldn't. But the shiny, you guys. It tempts.

[livejournal.com profile] teniente_ross, you so did know about this and never mentioned it, didn't you. *is out the loop with Spanish releases and broadcasts that aren't manga* I totally thought you had downloaded it or something.

Weekend in bullet points

1. Laptop status = OS reinstalled, firefox reinstalled. Can't watch videos on desktop because the safe mode has no sound, so I'd download shit to my pendrive and plug it to my portable DVD player. Only what I could get on AVI, sadly.

2. Went to buy manga on Friday. Only got:
Rurouni Kenshin deluxe #2
Fullmetal Alchemist #16-17

3. Finished Witches Abroad by PTerry. Interestingly, this might be my favorite Witches series book so far. The meta was quite... Princess Tutu-like.

4. Quick notes on anime I've watched.
- Tales of the Abyss 03: I loved that they animated the "I'll kill you bastards!" Anise off-scene on the Tartarus XD
- Kuroshitsuji 01: I haven't read the manga for this one yet so I could have an unbiased impression. The creepy atmosphere was interesting so I'll keep watching so far, even though the humor wasn't that funny and the characters felt topic and/or fanservicey so far. Also, the one in charge of the music could lay it down with the opera BGM a bit.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Yotsuba / WTF did I just watch...?)
Yeah, I know I have 276762 drabbles to write. I'll work on them this week, really.

Well, summer is fucking over at last, which makes me sad because it's going to be a dreadful winter to me. I start classes tomorrow, also. I reckon I'll spend the day playing videogames now that I can. We're buying the textbooks for my language courses tomorrow; even if I learn little, I can still self-learn with these one day. I think I'll check out the German book at least so I don't go so green. Because I'm green. I barely know enough to recognize the fanboy German from you-know-what-character, and that's it. I have until the 15th to get familiar with it. ACHTUNG, BABY~

Looks like this anime season sucks balls, too. I'll focus on finishing my incomplete series instead. The only new thing I'm checking out is Tales of Reservoir Chronicle the Abyss. Nope, I've never played the game. I can't play the game because Europe sucks. Mind you, I'm watching because I can't play the game, and perhaps it's a good thing (I did watch the ToS OVAs and read the manga before playing it for that reason). Why? Color me curious. So even if it sucks in the end, at least the characters are good looking (stupid sexy Jade Curtiss) and I can mock the LOLCLONES plot like it were Tsubasa, except without the emotional investment. Yeah, so I'll be watching this while the world goes for Gundam 00: Electric Boogaloo.

With Western series, there's How I Met Your Mother. Today's episode was great. (Damn you, Marshall, now I want a burger!) I'm also watching No Heroics, but that's a short one. Sadly, they talk so fast for my level I have to download subtitle files. (It was tragic this week, because the subs were out of sync ;;) And for the lulz -wait, all I'm downloading are sitcoms, and this is for the lulz? then again, CGI dragon-, maybe I'll check BBC's Merlin.

Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

Last night I finished Seirei no Moribito, and it was a pretty good anime. The plot gets interesting, the characters are great and you get attached to them, the action sequences are so well animated. It's good Asian-like fantasy and pretty to look at. There are no evil villains, either, not even La Lunga.

Also, Balsa/Tanda are so OTP ♥ Everyone ships them in canon, even. Really where can you find stoic wild warrior female + mellow herbalist shaman male where the waifu waiting for the husbando to return and love them back is the MAN? Nowhere else, that's where. Stupid Balsa. But I still love both characters separately and together all the same, especially Tanda. Maybe Tanda is my favorite character, go figure.

Chagum, the title character and the boy Balsa is protecting, has really awesome character growth and he's overall adorable in several occasions. My only concern was that he seemed to get used to life in town too fast for royalty, but it might be a problem of time constrains. Probably the original source took its timing.

One thing I like about the series is how smart the characters are. Balsa is pretty clever herself, dodging death and persecutors and future attacks, what you wouldn't quite expect from the brawns of the team. Tanda is a herbologist/doctor and a shaman disciple so it's a given, but I particularly love how several of his own discoveries and talents at the ending were what saved the day. Chagum is also quite the clever kid. And then we get to characters like shaman Torogai, who's your kooky yet filled with ancient knowledge old lady, for your interrogate-astral-lifeforms needs. And star-diviner Shuga from court (another favorite of mine), who takes the role of the resident Ravenclaw and academically investigates in parallel the whole plot a la noir detective like nobody else does. Then we have the emperor's elite assassin group, who don't have to envy a thing to the FBI. And Tohya, a boy who's friends with Balsa and Tanda, who might not always be the brightest crayon but lives out of his nice street smarts. And so on.

Do I recommend it? I do. It started slow for me -but I know people who fell in love from episode 01- but it's packed with awesome. And even if you were a shallow, nitpicky person, the animation and character design is pretty. It's only 26 episodes, also.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Waka / about to strike a pose)
I just watched my first Satoshi Kon movie, and from all of the options I go and pick the non-mindfucking, non-creepy one. Yup, that would be Tokyo Godfathers. What an adorable film!

And you know, past the "oh goodie, Latino hitman from all things *rolleyes*", I was sort of amused by the dialogs in Spanish. Then again, it helps that the Spanish was 10000 times more fluid than on, for instance, Heroes. At least the woman was definitely a native speaker and even had a Southern accent (Argentinian? Uruguayan?)

But back to Japan, there was this documentary on cable about a certain pest animal on Tokyo. I had no idea that crows were overpopulating that city. And I thought the seagulls in Galicia were ridiculous! Crows steal their food from the garbage bags and steal wire hangers to use them as base for their nests. And those bitches are huge! Kind of scary, too.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Isaac & Miria / loving the insanity)
I shouldn't won't be able to check them out soon because I do have an exam on the 10th, but here it goes. Recommend me anime, manga, TV shows you think I might like. No matter how old they are. Mind you, I might even prefer old stuff to boring new series. Hell, if you want even throw series you don't think I might like anyway but you love a lot. This is your chance to poke me or change my mind on things.

The only restriction is length. When it comes to shounen or American TV, please don't rec lengthy, ongoing fandoms. Right now I'm looking for autoconclusive series. Long manga is fine, though, but notice I've already given a chance to several long Jump series I ended up dropping out of boredom (Bleach, DGM, KHR).

My preferred genres are comedy, supernatural, fantasy, historic/mythological, suspense, horror, or just quirky crap. I prefer interesting plots or characters over prettiness of animation/actors. I will accept romance as long as it's set in one or more of the genres above girls crossdressing is guilty pleasure; if it's BL I'm not taking seme/uke stereotypes, if it's het or yuri I won't enjoy mushy saccharine (and in any, I won't like abusive couples or hatesex). Anyway, in doubt there's a list of fandoms I loved in my profile. Or just ignore it and throw things at me.

I mentioned this on Twitter, but repeating it here: This site has a load of subtitles for series to download. Pretty handy if you, say, want to watch British TV shows and there are too many unfamiliar accents for you to follow.

Goes to show how much of a weird freak I am. I actually enjoyed 3 minutes of music video of canon AU (with hip hop BGM) better than 27 episodes of mecha and attacking with galaxies and OMGSOGAR.

You know why? Because it's a fucking ZELDA RIPOFF. No, really, it is. And I'd play it if this was a videogame, but only if it was an action-with-puzzles in the lines of (of course!) Zelda/Okami.

Honestly, guys. Slithering through guards hiding under bushes.

I've done it... in OCARINA OF TIME. And one of the Oracle games too, I think.

But really, honestly, I'm broken because I find this more epic. THE LEGEND OF NIA: A DRILL TO THE PAST. I'm half serious with this. SIMON, HERO OF SPIRAL, PIERCE THE HEAVENS WITH YOUR MASTER DRILL. Or something.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Kino / Guns 'N Roses)
Since [livejournal.com profile] kirarakim was nagging about it, I gave Baccano! another chance. Just finished marathoning it in 3 days, and I'm only missing the DVD-only episodes now.

So, one of the main turn-offs I had when I first watched episode one, months ago, was that it's too confusing. Is it still confusing? ...Yes. Yeah, sorry, I did get the plot in the end but I still had troubles following the events or even remembering what things happened during what year. And mind you, I still do (I'll need a rewatch or two to get it completely clear here). The other complain was the large cast meaning way too many character names to remember. Even now, for some characters, I have to make an effort to recall their first names. This is an issue I also have with epically long shounen so it might be my own fault.

But you know what? It was FUN. So much fun. It's got action (well duh, mafia and all), it's got plot (too much plot for 13 episodes, but still), it's got cool people, it's got suspense. I've never been a fan of mafia flicks, but this one was really near and the fact it also has a fantasy setting (LOL ALCHEMY LOL IMMORTALS) made it the more interesting to me -I like it when fandoms with apparently realistic plots throw cracky or supernatural stuff at you. You just can't get bored in the entirety of an episode. And it's all so well animated, too.

Also, I LOL'd hard at the names, yeah. The names of words we use in Spanish. Martillo? Jacuzzi? (in Venezuela, jacuzzi = any hot tub period) Vino? (although to be fair, this time it was supposed to come from wine). There was this Gandor guy called Berga, which sounds a lot like "verga" (slang for cock). Fun times, fun times.

Speaking of silly names. My favorite character was Jacuzzi and I can't explain why he rocks so much without spoiling. But Isaac/Miria are pretty close, and let me tell you: I ship those two SO HARD you wouldn't believe it ♥ Just... so NUTS and so CUTE and DUMB and they're made for each other in their insanity. And remember that I said some days ago that I'm into the traveling shenanigans type? And they're so adorable they melt away every heart with the POWER OF BATSHIT :D The other pairing I'm really into is Jacuzzi/Nice ♥

One of the things that makes me a little sad, however, is how so many cool characters got their premises or personality revealed on the last minute. I'd probably like Firo and Ennis (separately and as a pairing) if they weren't explained in the very end. Same with Maiza, Czes, Chane, and Rachael.

Boring layout is boring:

Any opinions on it?

The anime screening was pretty neat yesterday. There were these contests in which they asked for volunteers with knowledge about Dragon Ball, and then they'd make them imitate attacks (i.e, the fusion dance thing -in pairs, obviously- and the kame hame ha). It was hilarious! About the anime itself:

- Grave of the Fireflies (...I want to unwatch this movie, seriously. I felt more unsettled than sad in the end. I did have teary eyes, though. But still, never watching it again!)
- Lucky Star #1 (kinda lame, but still funnier than Ichigo Whatsitsname)
- a random episode of BoBoBo (this one. I LOL'd)
- Darker than Black #1 (um, I had good expectations for this one, but that first episode is more confusing than appealing. I can't be bothered to find out more about main characters that don't appear that much in the first installment, sorry)
- Macross Frontier #1 (I spaced out at the space battle scenes; ah, sci-fi, you never grab me. The non-battle scenes... were pretty gay. The main character was like Kanda from DGM had a lovechild with a random Gundam protagonist)
- Ranma 1/2 #1 (we all know that one. pretty much like the manga beginning)
- Bola de Dan [Honou no Toukyuu-ji o Dodge Danpei] #1 (.....that so didn't improve my thoughts on old-school sports anime. also, most cheesy WTF attempt to backstory for a sports anime ever. also, DODGEBALL. might be a classic in Spain, but geez, it would've bored me to death in my childhood)
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Kyon / oh happy face)
The adapter/cable for the laptop is here already /o/ Of course, this makes me realize I just installed Linux on the desktop for nothing. I thought it'd take weeks. UGH.

This week there'll be some anime screenings in my faculty. Easiest extra credit activity ever: sit down through three afternoons of Japanese animation. There are contests, too. They tried to make a cosplay competition as well, but today only one dude came in disguise (in Akatsuki from Naruto robes) so... he won by default.

Either way, we watched the following today:
- Mononoke Hime (watched this one already, really neat and good-looking)
- Suzumiya Haruhi ep. 1 & 2 (it's an odd experience to watch amusing/funny anime/movies/series in group, especially a large audience, because you end up laughing harder than you would/did in private)
- Hikaru no Go ep. 1 (awww, Sai ;_;)
- Eyeshield 21 ep. 1 (in which TRC!Syaoran's voice is now a shounen retard)
- D.N.A^2 ep. 1 (old series is old, and I still fucking dislike Katsura harem series)
- Ichigo Mashimaro ep. 1 (extremely DULL and not really that funny)

Tomorrow I'm looking forward to Grave of the Fireflies, since I still haven't watched it (and I hope I don't weep, considering its fame in the sad department). We're also checking out Darker Than Black and Macross Frontier. On Friday there's no new series or movies I want to watch, but they got Marc Bernabé and Verónica Calafell to give us a talk (they're known Japanese translators here, and the guy is the author of a cool series of Japanese-teaching books) and the meta might be interesting.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Warashi / we so classy)
Since I had to go downtown today, I spent almost 50 bucks in belated manga volumes.

  • XXXHOLiC #11

  • Fullmetal Alchemist #10 & 11

  • Gintama #3

  • Matantei Loki Ragnarok #4 & #5

Haven't read the MaLoki volumes, but everything else is pretty awesome. And maybe I'll start shipping Shinpachi/Yamazaki for the LULZ of the hanami competitions.

On the meantime, I've been rewatching some Avatar book 2 (and next, book 3) since I'm apping Toph for RP. I also started Jigoku Shoujo last night because I miss following supernatural pseudo-horror shit, but it's hard to get episodes online and I wonder if it's going to get repetitive.

I'll start the headcanon meme tonight, maybe. You can still toss some ideas here.

Happy New Year, guys!

[livejournal.com profile] telrunya, you bitch, look what you've done. Now I'll have to buy the novel!

Translation to this. I just watched Brave Story, and it's such a cute anime movie. I really enjoyed it, there was something so Ende about it even if it had more of the "youth thrown into another world" Japanese fantasy cliché in essence (complete with wink to RPG elements). I really recommend it :D

So I'm told the novel is more obscure. It still sounds good to me either way! So, it goes to the to-buy list~

And it's kind of funny because the books I want to read the most recently are all Japanese light novels, and all of them are fantasy-oriented. There's Kino no Tabi, which might be less fantasy than the others, but you know... talking bike, and feeling like a twisted version of Petit Prince. There's Slayers, which is probably the most similar to what we all think when we hear the word fantasy: magic, sorcerers, demons, swordsmen, dragons, the whole lot. There's Twelve Kingdoms, which has such a rich world and background, and it's the only one that truly feels Asian. And now there's Brave Story, and I thank God it's only ONE book.

And of course, they all have in common I watched their anime versions first. There's also Howl's Moving Castle, but since it's based in a Western book I set it apart.

Well, sigh. I think I know where my money will go to this year: to import English translations of the series listed above!
taotrooper: Plastic toy aliens stare at you in wonder (LOL aliens!)
[livejournal.com profile] iconzicons' Choose Your Own Adventure cover icons are hilarious XD In the end I chose this one because as you all know, I think aliens are LOL (when they're not predating my childhood traumas of abduction). So, GIP!

Speaking of LOLaliens, you know, the Tokyopop translation of Duklyon is still less gayer than the Norma one. I guess the Spanish translators were considerably more stoned/drunk when they did that manga.

Also, I watched The Girl Who Leaped Time. That movie is quite awesome. I love how the consequences to time traveling kept piling on, bringing new issues whenever she tried to fix her mistakes. Makoto was a very real teenager, cute and awkward. It's a pity about Chiaki/Makoto D:

The other day I watched Enchanted and it was fine, but I was more amused at the lampshading on the Disney clichés than the story itself. I almost peed myself at this part XDDD

Ah, I forgot to post a holidays wishlist D: And I was too shy to post at posts on my flist for presents. So I guess I'll only have my Yuletide piece this year because it's so late. Anyway, if you have posted a wishlist, pass me the link ^^ Maybe I can do something for you before new year's.

ExpandWishlists are GO! )

Seeing my last year's list is hilarious, because I got several of that stuff but during the year instead. I did get the Zelda game for Christmas. The translations were actually done. I did get a NDS for my birthday. My FMA artbook is on the way. I bought a new mp3 player a while ago.
