Let's do this again, videogame edition.

Choose five series (no peeking before you choose them), list them, and then answer the questions behind the cut.

1. Okami
2. Zelda (of N64 continuity)
3. Ace Attorney
4. Tales of Symphonia
5. Odin Sphere

The questions )
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Ema / she blinded me with science)
1. Baby tiger.

There's also a baby penguin and a baby gorilla in that slideshow.

2. I'm surprised by this Gyakuten Saiban image in a good way.

I kind of thought official images had completely forgotten about, you know, the existence of the GS4 characters and stuff (I haven't seen new images of them in ages; even Larry Butz has more official art than them). But either way, while the fandom is all OMGSOGAY I still... don't see it |D Nor that the girls are yaoi fangirls for staring at them for the lulz. Haha, I'm just over here amused at the contrast on heights, Apollo and Maya so short. Old generation all staring at a distance and deadpan, while new generation all "graaaaaah in ur face!!" XD I like how Klavier unlike the other lawyers isn't taking the srs bsns, well, seriously, not even with Apollo wanting to punch him. Probably un-hobo!Nick and Edgeworth are just... trying to ignore the kids' noise. Reasons like this is why I grew more attached to GS4 characters than the old school guys.

I'm going to need this image in MQ/HQ like now, for RPing purposes.

3. Oh wow, if Babelfish/katakana is any indication, the spoilers are hinting that this month's FMA chapter will give me something goooood ♥
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Ema / she blinded me with science)
My thoughts on yesterday and today's Avatar episodes tomorrow. Some quickies:

1. Bought The World Ends With You on second hand at Game. And as long as the autoplay for the top screen is on, I'm doing fine -about to start day three. Not taking this game seriously, however, since it's Squeenix and Nomura. Besides, Neku and Shiki's character designs are just painful to look at. It's fun to poke and slash at shit with the stylus, so I'll just ignore it. But dayum, and you thought CLAMP characters were anorexic-skinny!

2. Slayers Revolution #3 in two words: LOL JELLYFISH.

3. Suddenly, this week I'm seeing Neil Patrick Harris everywhere. Well, no, only I started How I Met Your Mother and I keep hearing about this Doctor Horrible stuff. But still, weird universe is weird.

4. How did I not see this piece of pure awesomeness before? *_* Apollo Justice characters... wait for it... drawn as Okami characters! ♥ I'm mesmerized by Trucy's hat (so fitting!) and Ema's big drawer of medicines chemicals. ...Thank God Klavier doesn't look that much like Ushiwaka, or I would've needed years of therapy.

I *CANNOT* study Cognitive Science without relating crap to fandoms.

Gardner (1985) lists five developments within psychology which contributed to the paradigm shift from Behaviorism to Cognitivism.

...

And suddenly, I reimagined most of the last part of case 4-4, but replacing law with behaviorism and jurists with cognitivism. That's rich.

1) I'm surprised I've actually WORKED on my lab assignment for the last 24 hours. And progressed on it, too.

2) Incidentally, I just screwed up the laptop's Ubuntu installation and now it can't connect to the Internet at all. So I'm unexpectedly working on the desktop's distro. Go figure.

3) Ah, no, haven't forgotten about the post title:

3.1. [livejournal.com profile] pengiesama drew Who/Okami for me: Jack Harkness hitting on Ushiwaka. AHAHAHAHAHA :DDDD

3.2 Now, this art dump in general is awesome, but the best part is Apollo Justice characters as... Katamari cousins! ROFL! It's even cute, whyyyy is it cute.

Gah, I'll be late for theory class.

Kristoph: Tengo varios amigos carceleros.

1. .......His voice sounds like Michael Jackson or something, WTF.

2. No German ;_;

3. Is it me, or he sounds even more flirty in the translation? In the English version he's all smooth and polite, while here every time he talks to Trucy he sounds like he's hitting on her. He even used the word "bombón", and that's a term you'd use with someone who's hot, opposed to a cute little fangirl who's drooling on you. So he just sounds like a idiotic casanova interested in loli pedobait among other things.

4. In the end, the casual slang didn't annoy me nearly as much as the points above. He sounds less dorky-sexy and more of a jerk. They took away what I liked about him.

5. I know, I know. BAWWW CRY MOAR.

6. Wait, did I just dedicate a whole post to Klavier? LOOKS LIKE IT.

ETA: 7. I think it's the lack of Fräulein's what makes him sound so chauvinist (and sometimes even Herr's, in terms of politeness to men). They make him sound more polite and respectful, even when he's teasing around. That and the choice of words make his speech be more gentleman-ish in English, even with the random RAWK speak. In Spanish he just sounds like a brat with a large ego even in court -not that Klavier lacks the large ego, but at least he had style. I really don't get the "prince" vibes on Spanish!Klavier.

In an amazing act of masochism, I went and bought the local release of Apollo Justice let's see if selling one more copy can change CAPCOM's mind? I *would* buy Trials and Tribulations, bitches!!. (Besides, this game will probably sell less and I want to balance things out a bit.) Forty euros worth of trainwreck and epic LULZ in Peninsular Spanish (and if there's a god that loves me, random German) <- forget it, God hates me. I knew I'm in for a ride as soon as I checked the back of the box. These are gems, alright.

Phoenix Wright vuelve a la carga. Deberás ayudar al inexperto abogado Apollo Justice a desenmascarar la verdad y defender a los inocentes del astuto fiscal Klavier Gavin.

APOLLO JUSTICE, DEFENDER OF THE INNOCENT! GO GO POWER RANGERS INEXPERT LAWYERBOY!

CUNNING PROSECUTOR KLAVIER GAVIN, PROSECUTING THE INNOCENT ALL THE TIME, NO EXCEPTIONS. HE EATS THEM FOR BREAKFAST. HE RAPES THEM, TOO.

Then a screencap of court, with Klavier speaking... with a singular speech pattern.

¡Tranqui, tronco!

Case 4-1, in Spanish )

Will report the LULZ on case 4-2 later in the day.

...Oh man, I've been so away from everything recently it's not even funny. I think I need to be poked back to life. I need to choose priorities on... anything, actually. I've been absent from LJ for like three days. And it wasn't because I was studying or doing anything relevant. I was just... too lazy to read the flist. I'm so apathetic. I want to feel happy and productive again. I want to feel more loved. I want to do more than RP threads. I don't know, I'm rambling again.

Sigh.

You know, I watched the trailer of the new game from Vanillaware (the ones who did Odin Sphere, BTW), Oboro Muramasa Youtouden. Goddammit, that game is just so pretty looking: same graphic engine but with a Japanese fantasy plot?! DO WANT! I hope this shit won't arrive to Europe or I'll have to buy a Wii.

PW 1-4: the replay )

And something I was thinking about before going to bed last night in general. What does it make a character "boring"? I've found myself liking several characters other people find boring or underdeveloped (and no, I'm not necessarily talking about the one that popped up on fandom!secrets yesterday, although that secret kind of made me realize he's not the first one). I really think that the term is something subjective and personal.

+ Relevant to the main plot vs. filler character

I'm using Cardcaptor Sakura as my example. I remember that one day someone boggled at the fact people wrote about Naoko, or even shipped her with another character. But she's just there! She's a random classmate! I remember my reaction was "...so?" Okay, sure, she does nothing extremely important to the plot, but I do like Naoko in the anime as the local geek and bookworm girl. She might not have a plot or an important purpose, but I still liked her a lot.

Then you find people ignoring characters who DO have a purpose, such as Clow Reed or Kaho Mizuki. Or, if we go to different fandoms, people who bash one of the main cast members. So really, there's no way to win.

Also, you can have a character who only pops in for one arc or once every three years as your favorite. This is particularly plausible in shounen series with one trillion cast members.

+ Developed vs. underdeveloped

I'll grant that it's easier to be attached to a character with a solid story and a nice growth as a person. I love it when characters I like get their backstory, no matter how insignificant it is (might be just one tidbit). Perhaps you don't want to grow fond of a really random character you know nothing about or had a forced history.

Or do you? Can you be obsessed over someone who is not half as deep as the rest of the cast, or just appears a couple of times as a plot device? If you ask me, you perfectly can. You can still like the tiny bits you've seen of them, you can still like the two or three personality traits they've shown. You can relate to them, or find them cuter or more interesting than the protagonists or the extremely developed people, even if they "suck" in the actual story.

There's the Matt from Death Note phenomenon. Now, I didn't get to read half of the series, but why does it matter if someone liked the four pages or whatever this guy was in? Just let them be. (I mean, I can see it can be frustrating with all the pages and pages of Gary Stu fanon going around about Matt, but... on the other hand, I've been in similar spots myself, liking characters with no plot.)

And there's the other way around. That a character has the greatest development in the history of ever is no guarantee everyone should like them, or at least recognize them as one of the best characters in the cast. I do believe, and people might disagree with me, there is such a thing as overdevelopment. I mean, first, you can get so much information and hype and spotlight from a character you end up smothered by them and end up turned off. Second, in some cases less is more.

+ In conclusion, since this gets teal deer

The point, in five words: IT DOESN'T MATTER, IT'S SUBJECTIVE. It's not a question of it's well developed or even has a plot. Finding something boring or interesting can be irrational. Or maybe you just don't care if the character isn't one of the strong kids with the complicated past. There's nothing wrong with only liking developed characters, either. Or you can like both developed and underdeveloped characters, and those in between. It's not something you can explain with logic, you just like/dislike!

And also, justifying your dislikes by comparing the character you're not into with the So Awesome And Developed Character you love (and going about how retarded their fans are for not caring or noticing it, in wanky cases)? I find it unfair and silly. Even when it's a substitution in the plot. Especially if it's a substitution, I'd say.

*** ETA: and relevant to "OMG TEH BORING CHARAS gimme back Maya and Edgey u CAPCOM h0rs"

W-w-why wasn't I told there was a VOICED VERSION OF THIS GS4 TRAILER? I hate you right now, Japan. You and your sexy voices. I hate you so much! ;______; *has turned into goo, and is maybe a bit horny now*
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Crossover / oh so obscure)
It's been pretty normal these last days, except yesterday when I went to the GAME store to see if my member card was done, and got a second-hand copy of the first PW game. Oh, the horrors of translations. Well, actually, the Spanish dialogs aren't bad (I'm still getting used to acusación = prosecution), but the OBJECTION! voice dubs? The Miles one is AWFUL, he sounds like he's 50 and he smokes. Phoenix isn't that bad.

I feel like buying the local release of AJ next month, for the trainwreck of the voiceovers. Also, to see how/if they translated the fanboy German. I hope they keep it.

Either way, while I was replaying it I was struck by this plotbunny... I mean, I do have some plotbunnies for this fandom I don't dare to touch because it's intimidating and I prefer to delurk, but they normally are centered in characters I LIKE. So why the fuck do I want to write meta genfic about teen!Klavier meeting JFA!Edgeworth in Germany, from Miles' POV? Would I actually be able to pull him off IC?

As a matter of fact, are there even comms for Gyakuten Saiban genfic? Or het fic? All I've seen in LJ is slash, with the occasional Diego/Mia. And it's intimidating to post silly or metarrific genfics, or romantic antics, in communities with +1000 members, particularly if they're either wank galore (Avatar, HP) or the fandom's too pron-centric. Hell, it's intimidating even to COMMENT in other people's posts without sounding like a black sheep or a n00b.

Oh, and I got yet another perfect scenario to crossover Okami with: PETSHOP OF HORRORS. Think about it! Chris playing with this pretty, white-haired lady who's kinda mute like him and going around either feeding or dueling with half the shop. That's too cute. And meanwhile, HER pet is talking with Count D about lost civilizations (dude, people from the moon is fucking canon in PSoH). And it finishes with Leon freaking out when he arrives and sees this weird blond guy getting out the shop with a huge white wolf, and thinks he must've bought her from D. Except D is all LMAO and says they were just visiting, and he could never sell someone like that wolf to anyone. I tell you, it would be a gorgeous one if I get to write it someday.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Ron / but that's not right... or is it?)
Taken together the primacy effect and the recency effect predict that, in a list of items, the ones most likely to be remembered are the items near the beginning and the end of the list (serial position effect). Lawyers scheduling the appearance of witnesses for court testimony, and managers scheduling a list of speakers at a conference, take advantage of these effects when they put speakers they wish to emphasize at the very beginning or the very end of a long list.

[...]

Another example of the recency effect is applied by lawyers. The key witnesses will go at the end of list (or the beginning to take advantage of the primacy effect), so the jury will keep them in mind while they deliberate.

On the bad news front: LAPTOP CABLE STRIKES BACK T____T I was all of last night in emo state because it's not working again ever since I got back home. So I'm back to Larg (the desktop) who is still a bitch occasionally. It's like February alllll over again, Jesus. More details on the 'computer' tag.

;________________;

On the silly stuff front: Am I nuts for thinking that the new Steel Samurai Theme orchestral with vocals version is just perfect in sound for an upbeat Okami AMV? It's probably just me, I bet, as it's my reaction to any pop music with Japanese feel. It's a sentai opening song, goddammit.

And I'm amused the vocal version of The Guitar's Serenade was sung in both English and Japanese. Or English and Japanese-with-Engrish, whatever. It's fun! It sounds pretty! Except I can't get over the fact it has a violin solo and the piano is just keyboards. I also want a realistic in-game Garyuu Wave version, whut.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Ema / she blinded me with science)
1. During Cognitive Science class, the professor was talking about how we tend to associate and relate information with other things or words, to the point what we remember is altered by these relations and it's not trustworthy anymore.

So he gives as an example how eyewitnesses in legal trials sometimes give unintentional wrong testimonies in court, because they "remember" things that never really happened just by associations. They could see broken crystals in a car crash if they think the smash was strong enough, even though no windshields or mirrors were even broken in fact.

And I'm mentally all "DUUUUR! Suddenly Phoenix Wright games make more sense!"

Did you know that in the early 40's the judges and prosecutors took the eyewitnesses' testimonies as reliable facts, and thought that human memory worked like a recording tape? It wasn't until psychological experiments kicked in and proved otherwise that the legal system in the US and other countries didn't change to reflect this.

GOOD THING. DEFENSE ATTORNEYS WOULD BE SO SCREWED.

2. The bus' radio rickrolled me today O_o I'm not sure, however, if it was

a) The 70's-80's-90's station, and if it's that then it was just regular schedule
b) A really mean DJ who has been in the English-speaking side of the Internet and did it for the lulz
c) A really mean listener who has been in the English-speaking side of the Internet and requested Rick Astley for the lulz (not that people here know what that is)

It was probably option a, but still.

3. I'M EVEN MORE IN AWE FOR CHAPTER 82. Man, Arakawa, you reminded me why I loved that kid so much ♥ ♥ Now that I know what he told him, it makes so much sense and it's so much more awesome. asdgasghagsfhg
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Klavier / y halo thar)
Regarding Gyakuten Kenji.

- On one hand, and the first reaction I had? Edgeworth *rolleyes* Okay, I know I'm in the minority as one of the fans who's most usually meh and occasionally ugh at Miles as a character, and I hate feeling like that because you guys love this puddle of angsty awkwardness and frill so much. I do like him once in a full moon, however, and that brings the next bullet point.

+ On the other hand, that part in Trials and Tribulations where you play as Miles? I HAD HONEST FUN. I DID LIKE HIM A LOT THERE. I enjoyed the inner monologue and the sarcasm. So just because it's Edgeworth doesn't mean I'll be cringing at the whole game and clinging at Gumshoe for the lulz. So there's entertainment value even for me, that cynical heathen who doesn't fangirl Miles.

- On the one hand, I can't get over the English title. Okay, yeah, alliteration to match "Ace Attorney". But my brain goes all meta because really, what is a Perfect Prosecutor, and what does this mean in this game? Is it the Von Karma approach: win every time and have a flawless record? Is it the Klavier approach: just go for the truth even if that means convicting someone else and give the defense their point? And the thing is, it's more likely the game is in a timeline in which Edgeworth is hanging on his Von Karma phase. But either way, this is meta babble, and it doesn't help that I've been roleplaying as Herr Gavin these days so I have the discussions about winning vs. truth seeking way too fresh.

+ On the other, the full body sprites are cute and old school and I approve because I love that kind of sprites. They're way cool, even for Edgeworth. *is again a heathen because she never found him that hot* Hopefully, I'll never ever have to see this horrifying facial expression in this game even if he gets to wangst. I actually cringe IRL when he does that stupid face. /pet peeve

+ Besides, for the geek factor, playing from the prosecution and detective POV this time is just so neat! I want to know how different the procedures are. I want to see the whole logical patterns when you act as the prosecution. Of course, there's also the fact I AM roleplaying as a prosecutor myself, and that I've been tempted to write genfic about AJ, and this game might provide me a better understanding on those things. Maybe.

- I'm still a bit bummed it's not an Ema-centric game as some people were theorizing (I want to dust and spray the shit out of things!) since that could be the coolest sidegame ever for me. But yeah, I suppose they had to make it up to the fangirls Edgeworth and Gumshoe for their recent lack of new canon.

Either way, the concept is way cool and I will be playing it emulated as soon as it comes out in English. Even if it is Edgeworth.
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Yuuko / ♥)
Q: Phoenix Wright and/or Apollo Justice were obligated to defend a randomly chosen character from another CAPCOM franchise. Who would you choose to be that victimized character and why?

A: If I could choose any character, it would have to be Amaterasu from the Okami game. Why, you ask? Because as Amaterasu can help Phoenix Wright win his cases because she's a god, and she would have to be found "not guilty".

Fuck yeah Matsukawa! *thumbs up* But seriously, guys, I never thought a game producer would actually give me crossover plotbunnies from all things. Then again, I'm just easy to please: just a random mention to my favorite videogame by some other fandom personality is enough.

Speaking of random crossovers, I admit the Apollo Justice/Death Note crossover fanarts (as seen here, spoilers for the AJ main baddie) are fucking funny.

Moar icon explanations from that meme.

Let's rock, baby )
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Kero-chan / Addiction)
So I finished Apollo Justice last night. I think the only strong flaw, playing wise, I can think of is the less amount of crack and WTF characters compared to his predecessors. I mean sure, it had its moments, but most times it was quite the srs bzns.

On the other hand, the mysteries themselves were pretty good! It felt more detective-like than any Phoenix Wright game... which is ironic because the coolest investigation parts are done by Mr. Hobo. I liked how they connected in the end some characters I didn't expect to be connected at all. I feel bad for the people who were shipping a certain pairing because they were pretty much Peter/Claire'd (I thought that connection was sweet, myself, but I'm a sucker for cute family relationships and I didn't actually ship that).

I don't have time to rant about the characters right now because I gotta dress up for class. I've come to terms with hobo because he's neat... but he still didn't feel like Phoenix, and I felt like I was dealing with a different guy (pretty cool guy nonetheless, in the end, but I still can't think of him as Teh Wright). But I liked Apollo a lot, and Trucy is so cute, and Klavier is the win, and I'm sad Ema couldn't shine more and had such a lame ending cutscene.

Anyway, have some memes:

1) Anon meme. It's been a while?

2) Pick as many fictional characters as you want from a anime/manga/book/video game/etc. I know and I'll answer the following questions to the best of my abilities.

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?
10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
taotrooper: It's a polar bear dancing the hula; your argument is invalid (Fakir / the worst writer's block)
1. After finishing the second case of Apollo Justice, I can say with no fear of being mistake that the one(s) who localized this game MUST be the one(s) who did Okami. I SEE WHAT YOU DID THAR. And no, it's not my obsession or anything: it is THAT obvious. Every time Klavier opens his mouth. But the icing of the cake was...

Auf Wiedersehen, baby.

That... oh GOD XD It's like, do you HAVE to use this amount of random fangirl [insert European language here] to translate the Engrish-loving blond guys in your games, CAPCOM America? Don't make me like Klavier just because he has dialect patterns in common with Waka, okay?

2. Just a random question. As fanfic writers/fandom roleplayers, what do you find more stimulating?
a) Exploiting relationships you find interesting, even though you can't get into half of the pair (or both of them) for your life
b) Exploiting characters you find interesting, regardless of relationships (unless it's essential for the fic/RP/characterization in general)
c) Both of them
d) It depends of the case

For me, unless I have a really good plotbunny for a) or I'm forced to write it in an exchange, it's b) I'm a sucker for introspection or showing character reactions, even when writing pairings. I usually feel only comfortable writing pairing fic for ships in which I like or find interesting both halves (AND like their dynamics), because otherwise I don't have fun if I have to think too hard on how the one I like least would act. I normally have no idea, and I'm into IC writing, so for me it's a bit of a problem. It's not easy to get the voice of someone you're not entirely fond of right, unless the character is too similar to you.

3. More crossover ficlets. [livejournal.com profile] etrangere asked for Fakir and Shigure Sohma. I apologize for my sucky Gure characterization beforehand )

1. Did you know there's already a ROM for Apollo Justice? Talk about fast. Of course, I finished the first case already and "started" the second ("started" meaning "I was half done with the first investigation and then Ema pulled fingerprints on me, had to look for the mike, and the PC got frozen during my attempts to plug it in... and I hadn't saved!"). Just one spoiler )

2. 100 Kirbies!!! Cutest shit ever ^o^ No, really. Even if you don't know Kirby, it's epic.

3. Finished Chapter of Egg on my Princess Tutu marathon.

4. Soel's cable will be harder to obtain than what we expected, and it's not possible to fix it (note: avoid HP/Compaq products like the plague, unless it's printers and shit). But if you twist it in a certain way, they explained me, it gets to work. So the battery is charged now! /cheap bastards avoiding to buy a new AC adapter

5. Hopefully will finish the crossover meme tomorrow.
